阅读理解。     Whenever the sun dropped and the blue sky came up, my father and I used to climb the mountain
near my house. Walking together, my father and I used to have a lot of conversations through which I
learned lessons from his experiences. He always told me, "You should have goals like climbing the
mountain." Without the mountain-climbing that we both enjoyed,we couldn"t have enough time to spend
together because my father was very busy. I really got a lot from mountain-climbing. It gave me time to
talk with my father and to be in deep thought as well as develop my patience.
Once we climbed a very high mountain. It was so challenging for me because I was only ten years old. During the first few hours of climbing, I enjoyed the flowers and trees, and the birds"singing, but as time
passed, I got a pain in both of my legs. I wanted to quit climbing. In fact, I hated it at that mountain, but
my father said to me, "You can always see a beautiful sky at the top of the mountain, but you can"t see it
before you reach the top. Only there at the top, can you see all of the nice things, just like in life."
At that time, I was too young to understand his words. But later after that, I got new hope and
confidence. I found myself standing at the top of the sky, which was as clear as crystal (水晶).1. The passage tells us that mountain-climbing was _____for Father and Son. A. hard

began. What can be done to stop fights like this at school? In some schools, the disputants sit down with
peer mediators (同龄调解者). Peer mediators are students with special training in this kind of problems.
Peer mediators help the disputants to talk in a friendly way. Here are some of the ways they use:

"You always…
     2) Listen carefully to what the other person is saying. Don"t stop the other person"s words.

during the hottest time of the day, she has only her swimsuit to cover her.
When I showed it to my students, it was as if I had shown them scenes from a horror (恐怖) movie.
"But she will get dark," they said.
"That"s what she wants," I told them. "We think darker skin (肤色) is beautiful."
They looked at me in disbelief. It was as if I came from the moon.
For years, American girls spend their summer trying to get as tanned (晒黑) as possible. In China,
on the other hand, girls use umbrellas all year round.
What in the world is going on?
The pale skin we think looks unattractive (不漂亮) is what Asian women want. Both groups want
to meet their culture"s standard (标准) of beauty.
In the US, if you can afford to go on vacation in the summer, you head for a river, a lake or a beach,
where you try to get as much sun as possible. If you are rich you take a winter vacation in some sunny
spot. Your winter tan shows your wealth.
In China, once upon a time, the few wealthy were the ones who didn"t have to work out in the hot
sun. So the whiter the skin, the richer the woman. The folk opera performers who play these ladies wore
lots of white makeup (妆容). The tradition survives to this day.
So it comes naturally that none of my students wishes to follow the Western ways in this regard.
But now I am noticing that a new business - the tanning booth (美黑店) - started up in China. I
admire those brave enough to define(给…下定义)their own idea of beauty, but I do wonder what their
grandmothers would have to say to them about it! 1. The students were shocked at the picture the writer showed them because ______.  A. they thought it shameful for a girl only to wear a swimsuit
B. the writer"s daughter was wearing very little while out in the sun
C. it is dangerous for a girl to be out on a lake alone
D. with the powerful sunlight the writer"s daughter would have got a suntan2. According to the article, which kind of woman meets the American standard of beauty?A. Women with blond hair.
B. Women with a slim figure.
C. Women with tanned skin.
D. Women with pale skin.3. In the US a winter tan usually means the person _____.A. is hard-working
B. doesn"t have to work
C. has a lot of money and spare time

as I grew, this sightless eye, in so many ways controlled me that I walked with my face looking at the floor so people would not see the ugly me.
Yet Mama would hold me in her arms, feel my hair gently and say, "If you hold your head up high, it
will be OK. And people will see your beautiful soul." She continued this message whenever I wanted to
hide.
As a little child, I thought Mama meant, "Be careful or you will fall down or bump into something
because you are not looking." As a teenager, I found that my mama"s words helped me begin to realize
that by letting people look at my face, I let them recognize the intelligence and beauty behind my eyes.
In high school I was successful both academically and socially. I was even elected class president, but
inside me I still felt like a freak (畸形人). When things got really bad, I would cry to my mama and she
would look at me with loving eyes and say, "Hold your head up high and face the world. Let them see the beauty that is inside."
When I met the man who became my partner for life, we looked each other straight in the eye, and he
told me I was beautiful inside and out. Mama"s love and encouragement were the spark that gave me the
confidence to overcome my own doubt.
"Hold your head up high" has been heard many times in my home. Now, I"m a mother, too. Each of my children has felt its invitation. The gift my mama gave me lives on in another generation.1. What is TRUE of the writer"s eyes? A. She was blind in one eye when she was born.
B. Her blindness was caused by a traffic accident.

having a major operation and would be lying down for several weeks. Of course, I responded with an
immediate"Yes!". As I planned the meal in my head, I thought of how many times over the years I had
been asked to prepare food. I have done so countless times with a very open heart.
But the truly amazing thing is that I have received double over the course of my life. When my mother
died, our house was filled with fresh dinners for weeks. A woman from the church of our community
stopped by each evening with some food. The gift of food was her small way of trying to ease our pain.
Later in my life, when I was on bed rest during my pregnancy (***) with twins, women of the
church again stepped in to help. They arranged babysitting for my two-year-old daughter, and brought
lovely dinners to our house. Even when I was put in the hospital, my husband would bring cooked meals
to my hospital room. How we relied on these dinners to feed my tired husband and young daughter!

talking about their favorite holidays, it usually includes their feelings connected with sharing food. I know
that I will have many more opportunities in my lifetime to prepare food for others. It is truly a gift I look
forward to preparing and delivering to someone in need.1. The author has received lots of food from others because.A. she is poor at cooking
