An Israeli law banning too skinny models went into effect with the start of 2013. The law, approved last March in Israel, requires models to prove they have maintained a Body Mass Index (BMI) of at least 18.5 for three months before a fashion show. That means a woman who is 5"8"" tall can weigh no less than 119 pounds. “This law is another step in the war against eating disorders,” said physician Adatto. “Underweight models,” he explained, “can no longer serve as role models for innocent young people who copy their false image of being skinny.” But some critics in this country say it is misguided, focusing on weight instead of health. They also say the Israeli ban is bound to fail because of the strong power of the fashion industry. “I think it’s an approach that isn’t going to work.” Said eating disorder expert Susan Ice, who worked with an organization which creates a healthy working environment for models. But Adatto told the reporter that he began to concern the issue after meeting an ambitious model who looked like she needed to be hospitalized. He said. “I realized that only legislation can change the situation. There was no time to waste, so many girls were dieting to death.” However, the efforts to regulate models’ weight in Spain and Italy have not resulted in significant changes in part because of difficulties in determining reliable methods of measuring weight and health. Still, folks including Ice say there’s no denying that images from Hollywood and the fashion industry can be difficult for young women to deal with. “Certainly I don"t believe the modeling industry has caused the rise in eating disorders, but it makes it harder,” she says. “It’s a difficult recovery environment, worshiping thinness as the beauty ideal.” 小题1:What does BMI in the first paragraph refer to?A.A new show held by those skinny models. | B.A worldwide prize for the healthiest model. | C.A measure of body health based on height and weight. | D.A kind of medicine to cure eating disorders. | 小题2:One benefit the new Israeli law may bring is ________.A.to change the working conditions of models | B.to prevent models from suffering from eating disorders | C.to lower the chance of skinny models’ death | D.to provide guidance for women worshiping thinness | 小题3:In the opinion of the critics, the law won’t succeed because .A.the fashion industry is much too influential | B.it misleads young women to form a bad eating habit | C.it doesn’t provide a proper approach that can work well | D.it doesn’t create a healthy working environment for models | 小题4:According to the passage, the new Israeli law banning skinny models is .A.practical | B.acceptable | C.reasonable | D.controversial |

April 11, 2003 12:44 a. m. PST, Associated Press The respiratory(呼吸系统) virus known as SARS has appeared to spread in the United States only to family members of health workers with close contact to a sick person. On Thursday, the head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said there might be a case of severe acute respiratory syndrome(综合症) spreading through the workplace. Dr. Julie Gerberding said a suspected SARS virus patient who became ill after traveling to Asia might have infected a co-worker in Florida, which made her “very worried”. So far, a dozen people—nine family members and three health workers—were infected after coming into close contact with the person with SARS. The rest of the 166 suspected American cases have something to do with people who were infected while traveling in Asia. In the Gainesville, Fla. area, a 47-year-old woman was believed to have been infected at work by a 60-year-old woman who was the nation’s first suspected SARS case, said Tom Belcuore, director of the Alachua County health department. Since the World Health Organization announced a worldwide warning last month about SARS, the United States has started infection control in hospitals and among families of suspected cases. Florida officials said a school in Okaloosa County went through a cleaning after a 6-year-old boy suspected of having SARS appeared at school with slight symptoms. “Health officials are watching the boys’ contacts at school to make sure no one else is infected,” said Rob Hayes, health department spokesman, “The boy may have been infected from a family member,” Hayes said, “We immediately became aware of it and had the child sent home. He’s staying at home with his family until 10 days after symptoms disappear.” The researchers guessed that the virus might have come from animals. However, the scientists have not ruled out the possibility that some other microbe might also help make SARS more serious or easier to catch. 小题1:The best title for this text is _______.A.A Worldwide Warning | B.Suspected SARS Cases | C.What Is SARS | D.Possible Spread of SARS in the USA | 小题2:The writer wrote this text mainly to _______.A.discuss the danger of SARS | B.report research result about SARS | C.inform people of the spread of SARS | D.explain to the readers what SARS is | 小题3:How many cases of suspected SARS are there in the U.S.A. according to the text? What seemed like an unplanned comment about Syria"s chemical weapons (武器) had a major effect on world events this week. American Secretary of State John Kerry spoke last Monday at a press conference in London. He was reacting to questions about possible American action to answer a chemical weapons attack believed to be likely in Syria. One reporter asked the secretary whether there is anything Syria"s president can do to avoid an American military (军事的) strike. "Sure, he can turn over every single bit of his chemical weapons to the international society in the next week." Mr. Kerry made it clear that he was speaking theoretically, and did not expect anything like that to happen. But Russia seized on the idea and persuaded Syria to do the same. That brought plans for American congressional (议会) votes on military action to a halt. President Obama has said he would accept a diplomatic settlement if it can be carried out. But that would likely take weeks, at least. Mr. Obama has said the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad must be punished for breaking the nearly century old ban on the use of chemical weapons. He called for American action to prevent future use of chemical weapons in Syria. He suggested limited airstrikes on government targets. The airstrikes could happen quickly if Congress approves. Joanna Kidd is a security expert with London"s King"s College. She says any move to place Syria"s chemical weapons under international control would take a long time, if it could be done at all. 小题1:What does the author think of John Kerry’s statement at a press conference in London last Monday?A.Theoretical | B.Practical | C.Unintended | D.Planned | 小题2:What does the underlined word “halt” probably mean?A.stop | B.action | C.attention | D.debate | 小题3:According to the passage, which of the following statement is TRUE?A.Russia thinks there was a chemical weapons attack in Syria. | B.Russia is against the American military strike on Syria. | C.Obama believes that a diplomatic settlement is on the way. | D.American Congress will approve Obama’s limited airstrikes. | 小题4:The belief shared by John Kerry and Joanna Kidd is________.A.Bashar al-Assad’s administration should be punished for breaking the ban | B.Obama’s government has to prevent future use of chemical weapons in Syria | C.Syria"s president can do nothing to avoid an American military strike | D.placing Syria"s chemical weapons under international control is hard to achieve |

With only a click of the mouse, rumors can be forwarded between microblogs very quickly. As an example, recently, perceptive netizens discovered that some photos displayed on microblogs depicting Beijing’s June rainstorm had actually been fabricated. Sina.com is one of the major internet portals(门户网站) in China with hundreds and thousands of users, and a majority of celebrities and renowned citizens have their microblog accounts on this portal. As recently as six months ago, the website decided to establish a specialized team to verify rumors and provide accurate information for its users. Tan Chao is in charge of the team. “Before I took the job, I usually couldn’t identify what information was real and what was fake. But during the rumor verification process, we discovered that a lot of information was false, including fake photos, fake news stories and rumors that had been spread through microblogs.” It‘s not just website portals which are taking on fact-checking responsibilities, but also a number of civic-minded netizens, who recently set up a Rumor Verification Federation on Sina.com’s microblog system to help netizens identify fake information online. Dianzizheng is the team leader of the federation. He says they’ve publicized more than 150 pieces which refute rumors, which attracted more than 10 thousand visitors within two months. “We live in an age of new media, so we can’t use the old methods to verify rumors. We can’t wait for the media to verify the facts with related administrative departments and then release a formal announcement. We can’t allow rumors to run rampant and then deal with it, we need to fight rumors while they’re spreading. I think that this is the best way to deal with rumors nowadays.” Some experts say this demonstrates the advantages of the internet compared to other traditional media. The open platform allows information to be examined and clarified by netizens. But experts like Ding Wenguo, President of the Journalism and Communication College at the China University of Political Science and Law says this self-correction function of the internet is still quite limited. “It’s still quite difficult to tell which information is true in such an open environment by just reading a number of different opinions on the same issue. This is something which we need to pay attention to. If society is deluged with too much false information, and it’s allowed to spread in such a fast manner, then people will be suspicious of all kinds of information including important information from authorities. It also exacerbates(恶化) problems relating to social communications and mutual-understanding, which in turn harms society as a whole.” Experts suggest that the government should react more quickly in the internet age. Once a rumor begins to spread, administrative departments should make announcements as early as possible to dispel rumors before they lead to bad outcomes. 小题1:Sina.com decided to found a specialized team to ____.A.limit the number of microblogs | B.advance the development of microblogs | C.prevent the spread of rumors on the Internet | D.urge the government to react quickly to the rumors | 小题2:Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?A.All the rumors have been spread through microblogs. | B.Sina.com is the most popular Internet portal in China. | C.The photos displayed on microblogs might be fake. | D.Traditional media tend to get rumors examined and clarified. | 小题3:The underlined word "fabricated" in the first paragraph can be replaced by "__". A.draw a conclusion | B.support an argument | C.introduce a topic | D.describe a scene |

New rules will let millions of Americans know where more of their food comes from. The law is known as COOL -- Country of Origin Labeling(标签). American congress first passed the law in 2002. Stores have had to label seafood by country of origin since 2005. But industry pressure delayed other requirements until last week. Products that must now be labeled include fresh fruits and vegetables, muscle meats and some kinds of nuts. But the rules are complex, and many foods are not included. For example, organ meats are free to be labeled. So are processed foods, including cooked or smoked foods. The same food may sometimes have to be labeled and other times not. Fresh or frozen peas, for example, have to be labeled but not canned peas. Foods that are mixed with other foods are also excluded. Mixed nuts, for example, do not need to be labeled. The same is true of a salad mix that contains different things like lettuce and carrots. Or a fruit cup that combines different fruits. Also, the law doesn’t include restaurants and other food service organizations. Department of Agriculture officials say the law is really meant for larger grocery stores. The United States has imported more and more food in recent years to save money and expand choices. Country-of-origin labeling has become more common lately but has still been limited in many stores. Food safety is one reason why some shoppers pay close attention to where foods came from. For example, when a large number of people recently got sick from salmonella(沙门菌病), officials blamed peppers from Mexico. Yet the last big food scare involved spinach grown in California. But labeling is also a way for people to know they are getting what they want. Some want to buy local foods or foods from a particular country. The country-of-origin labeling law gives stores 30 days to correct any violations(违反) that are found. Stores and suppliers that are found to be deliberately violating the law could be fined 1,000 dollars per violation. Federal inspectors are not to take action to enforce the law for six months to give time for an education campaign. Some food safety activists say they are generally pleased with the law. They call it a good step that will give people more useful information. 小题1:Why has more and more food been imported to the United States in recent years?A.It is economical and provides people with more choices. | B.Foreign food is of higher quality than native food. | C.Americans need more and more food recently. | D.The United States is short of food supply. | 小题2:Consumers are more concerned about where foods come from because________.A.they are curious about the origin of the food. | B.most of them are particular about the tastes | C.they are concerned about food safety | D.most of them are food safety activists | 小题3:The new rules of the country-of-origin labeling law will come into effect________.A.right now | B.in a month | C.in three months | D.in half a year | 小题4:Which of the following can be inferred from the text?A.Store owners are most likely to be the supporters of the law. | B.The government of America will possibly forbid importing peppers from Mexico. | C.Federal inspectors couldn’t take measures to enforce the law. | D.Most Americans prefer imported vegetables to the vegetables grown in local places. |
