If Confucius(孔子)were still alive today and could celebrate his September 28 birthday with a big cake, there would be a lot of candles. He’d need a fan or a strong wind to help him put them out. While many people in China will remember Confucius on his special day ,few people in the United States will give him a passing thought. It’s nothing personal. Most Americans don’t even remember the birthdays of their own national heroes. But this doesn’t mean that Americans don’t care about Confucius. In many ways he has become a bridge that foreigners must cross if they want to reach a deeper understanding of China. In the past two decades, the Chinese studies programs have gained huge popularity in Western universities. More recently, the Chinese government has set up Confucius Institutes in more than 80 countries. These schools teach both Chinese language and culture. The main courses of Chinese culture usually include Chinese art, history and philosophy(哲学).Some social scientists suggest that Westerners should take advantage of the ancient Chinese wisdom to make up for the drawbacks of Western philosophy. Students in the United States, at the same time, are racing to learn Chinese. So they will be ready for life in a world where China is an equal power with the United States. Businessmen who hope to make money in China are reading books about Confucius to understand their Chinese customers. So the old thinker’s ideas are still alive and well. Today China attracts the West more than ever, and it will need more teachers to introduce Confucius and Chinese culture to the West. As for the old thinker, he will not soon be forgotten by people in the West, even if his birthday is. 小题1:The opening paragraph is mainly intended to .A.provide some key facts about Confucius | B.attract the readers’ interest in the subject | C.show great respect for the ancient thinker | D.prove the popularity of modern birthday celebrations | 小题2:We can learn from Paragraph 4 that American students .A.have a great interest in studying Chinese | B.take an active part in Chinese competitions | C.try to get high scores in Chinese exams | D.fight for a chance to learn Chinese | 小题3:What is the best title for the passage?A.Forgotten Wisdom in America | B.Huge Fans of the Chinese Language | C.Chinese Culture for Westerners | D.Old Thinker with a Big Future | 小题4:The passage is likely to appear in .A.a biography | B.a history paper | C.a newspaper | D.a philosophy textbook |

A private group of scientists has announced plans to make an exact copy of a human being. An American member of the team says he and the others will soon begin a serious effort to clone humans. Panos Zavos says the team hopes to manufacture the world’s first cloned baby within the next two years. In recent years, scientists have produced exact genetic copies of sheep and a few other animals. They created these clones from a single cell of an adult animal. Three years ago, another American doctor, Richard Seed, announced plans to clone a human being. However, there is no evidence that he has been successful. Doctor Zavos says the new international group plans to offer human cloning only to women who are currently not able to become pregnant or produce children. He says the aim is to assist people who want to have their own biological child. The technology would be similar to that used to clone animals. It would involve cleaning genetic material from a woman’s egg. Doctors then would place genetic material from the woman’s husband into the egg before putting it into the woman’s uterus(子宫). Doctor Zavos says his group plans to do the work in a country near the Mediterranean Sea. He did not name the country. He says an Italian reproductive expert, Sevorino Antinori, is leading the team. Doctor Antinori has led the efforts to help many older women become pregnant. He is known for establishing pregnancies in women as old as sixty. Many medical experts and other groups are opposed to the idea of cloning humans. Several countries ban or restrict work on human cloning. Several doctors criticize the announcement by Doctor Zavos. They say doctors do not know if cloning humans is possible or safe. They say it would be irresponsible to attempt to clone a human being. That is because the chances of success are too small and the risks are too great. 小题1:The underlined word “manufacture” in the first paragraph means “_________”.A.produce | B.oppose | C.attempt | D.experiment | 小题2:Which of the following statements is TRUE?A.In theory, scientists are unlikely to clone humans. | B.Richard Seed has fallen behind other scientists in cloning humans. | C.Cloning human beings is good for men. | D.People have different ideas about cloning humans. | 小题3:How do many medical experts and other groups like the idea of cloning humans?A.They are in favour of the idea. | B.They are against the idea. | C.They have an optimistic attitude to the idea. | D.They think it is none of their business. |

Somali pirates(海盗) robbed three Thai fishing ships with 77 sailors on board nearly l,200 miles off the Somali coast, the farthest-off-shore attack to date,an officer said Tuesday. Pirates have gone farther south and east in answer to increased patrols(巡逻)by warships off the Somali shore. The robbing of the three ships on Sunday was about 600 miles outside the normal operation area for the international force, said a spokesman. The spokesman said the attack so far out at sea was a clear sign that the international patrols against pirates were having a “marked effect on pirate activity in the area”. “Once they start attacking that far out, you’re not even really talking about the Somali basin or areas of water that have any connection with Somalia,” said an officer,Ro ger Middleton.“Once you’re that far out,it"s just the Indian Ocean, and it means you’re looking at trade going from the Gulf to Asia, from Asia to South Africa.” "This is the farthest robbing to date. They are now operating near the Maldives and India,”said another officer. The three ships--the MV Prantalay ll,12,and l 4—had 77 members on board in total. All of them are Thai, the spokesman said. Before the Sunday robbing, pirates held l l ships and 228 sailors. Too much TV watching can harm children"s ability to learn and even reduce their chances of getting a college degree, new studies suggest in the latest effort to examine the effects of television on children. One of the studies looked at nearly 400 northern California third-graders. Those with TVs in their bedrooms scored about eight points lower on math and language arts tests than children without bedroom TVs. A second study, looking at nearly 1000 grown-ups in New Zealand, found lower education levels among 26-year-olds who had watched lots of TV during childhood. But the results don"t prove that TV is the cause and don"t rule out that already poorly motivated youngsters(年轻人)may watch lots of TV. Their study measured the TV habits of 26-year-olds between ages 5 and 15. Those with college degrees had watched an average(平均)of less than two hours of TV per weeknight during childhood, compared with an average of more than 2 1/2 hours for those who had no education beyond high school. In the California study, children with TVs in their rooms but no computer at home scored(得分)the lowest while those with no bedroom TV but who had home computers scored the highest. While this study does not prove that bedroom TV sets caused the lower scores, it adds to findings that children shouldn"t have TVs in their bedrooms. 小题1:According to the California study, the low-scoring group mightA.have watched a lot of TV | B.not be interested in math | C.be unable to go to college | D.have had computers in their bedrooms | 小题2:What is the researchers" understanding of the New Zealand study results?A.Poorly motivated 26-year-old watch more TV. | B.Habits of TV watching reduce learning interest. | C.TV watching leads to lower education levels of the 15-year-olds. | D.The connection between TV and education levels is difficult to explain | 小题3:What can we learn from the last two paragraphs?A.More time should be spent on computers. | B.Children should be forbidden from watching TV. | C.TV sets shouldn"t be allowed in children"s bedrooms. | D.Further studies on high-achieving students should be done. | 小题4:What would be the best title for this text?A.Computers or Television | B.Effects of Television on Children | C.Studies on TV and College Education | D.Television and Children"s Learning Habit |

As computers become more and more popular in China, Chinese are increasingly relying on computer keyboards to input Chinese characters. But if they use the computer too much, they may end up forgetting the exact strokes(笔画) of each Chinese character when writing on paper. Experts suggest people, especially students, write by hand more. Do you write by hand more or type more? In Beijing, students start using a computer as early as primary school. And computer dependence is more widespread among university students. Almost all their assignments and essays are typed on a computer. All the students interviewed say they usually use computers. It"s faster and easier to correct the mistakes if using a computer. And that’s why computers are being used more and more often in modern education. But when people are taking stock in computers increasingly, problems appear. “When I"m writing with a pen, I find I often can’t remember how to write a character, though I feel I"m familiar with it.” “I"m not in the mood to write when faced with a pen and paper.” Many students don’t feel this is something to worry about. Now that it"s more convenient and efficient to type on a computer, why bother to write by hand? Many educators think differently. Shi Liwei , the headmaster of a famous primary school in the capital said, “Chinese characters enjoy both practical and aesthetic (审美的) value. But those characters typed with computer keyboards only maintain their practical value. All the artistic beauty of the characters is lost. Besides, handwriting contains the writer"s emotion. Through one"s handwriting, people can learn one"s thinking and personality. Beautiful writing will give people a better first impression.” To encourage students to write more, many primary schools in Beijing have made writing classes compulsory and in universities, some professors are asking students to turn in their homework and essays written by hand. 小题1:Which of the following can be the best title for the passage? A.The Importance of Typing | B.Practical and Aesthetic Value of Chinese Characters | C.Writing by Computer Will Replace Writing by Hand | D.To Type or to Write by Hand | 小题2:The students interviewed prefer to type on a computer mainly because_______.
