题型:不详难度:来源:
A small town in Tasmania, an island off the south coast of mainland Australia, is making itself an environmental role model by becoming the country"s first plastic bag-free town. Since April 28, Coles Bay"s population of 175 and its tourist shoppers have been using reusable paper or cloth bags to carry their shopping. Ben Keamey, a local businessman who supports the bag ban, said it would cut the amount of waste and prevent damage to native wildlife that try to eat the plastic. "Most businesses here come from the tourism and that"s all based on the environment, so people were pretty supportive," he said. Every year Australians use more than six billion plastic bags. More than half of these come from the supermarket. Since it takes years for the bags to biodegrade(生物递减分解), tens of millions end up polluting the environment. They kill about 100,000 sea-birds and animals, which mistake bags for food, every year. Only in the past few months have major Australian supermarkets begun cutting on their use of plastic bags. Environmental groups are pushing for a plastic bag fee like that in Ireland. There, since plastic bags cost 10 pence (about 1 yuan) each, their use has been cut by 90 per cent. Pollution caused by plastic bags is a big headache for countries all over the world. As early as 1999, Beijing said that only plastic bags of certain thickness could be used. This was to encourage them to be used again and again, since an average of six million plastic bags are used there every there every single day. 小题1:Which might be the best title for this passage?A.Deadly Plastic Bags | B.The End of Plastic Bags | C.How to Reuse Plastic Bags | D.The Present Situation of Plastic Bags | 小题2:Plastic bags will not be used by the native people of Coles Bay because they ______.A.cause the environmental pollution | B.are not easy to be reused | C.are not as good as cloth bags | D.are not strong enough | 小题3:Which of the following statements is NOT true?A.Plastic bags kill many animals in Australia each year. | B.Most Australian supermarkets have begun cutting on their use of plastic bags. | C.People at Coles Bay think poor environment may affect their tourism. | D.You have to pay for the plastic bags if you go shopping in Ireland. | 小题4:The example of Coles Bay is to show that ______.A.people take serious actions to deal with the plastic bag problem | B.people begin to realise the harm of using plastic bags | C.Australia is the first country in solving the plastic bag problem | D.Australians are aware of the importance of protecting the small town | 小题5:Which of the following measures on plastic bags is NOT mentioned in the passage?A.To forbid to use them by law. | B.to charge fee for plastic bags. | C.To make them thick enough to be reuseable. | D.To make them environmentally friendly. |

London—coffee protects mice from radiation and could get the same way in humans, according to Indian scientists. Scientist at India’s Bhabha Atomic Research Center discovered that mice injected with caffeine (咖啡因)remained alive after high doses(剂量)of normally lethal radiation. Although the study was limited to animals, Kachadillilli George, head of the research team, believes the findings could have implications (something suggested ) for humans . “It does suggest that coffee might have some beneficial effects in protecting against radiation,” he told New Scientist magazine late last month. George and his team injected 471 mice with caffeine and left them uncovered to 7.5 grays of gamma radiation(伽玛射线),enough to kill most mice. But 25 days later 70 percent of the mice that had received 80 milligrams(毫克)of caffeine per kilogram of body weight were still alive. On the contrary all 196 mice that had been left uncovered to the same radiation but had not been given any caffeine died. 小题1:George and his team drew the conclusion from .A.the magazine | B.their invention | C.the experiment | D.their experience | 小题2:From the news, we know can be protected from radiation.A.both mice and humans | B.only mice | C.only humans | D.neither humans nor mice | 小题3:From paragraph 5, we know 30 percent of the mice died 25 days later. “How can I learn English well?” This is a question many students ask. In my opinion, the most effective way is to learn lessons by heart. If you can recite the text and write it out, you’ve learned it fairly well. And if you can tell, in your own words, what the lesson says you’re a very successful learner indeed. Your English will be quite perfect. This is a difficult task. However, if you try to learn by heart only part of each lesson, you’ll find it not half so hard as you might have thought. Learning this way, you will make rapid progress. Of course, writing is also necessary. It helps you a lot on our way to success in English. Equally important is to feel the language. You should be able to laugh at jokes and be shocked at bad news. When using English, try to forget your mother tongue. Instead of helping you, your own language gets in your way. So, never try to see English through translation. 小题1:In the writer’s opinion, the most effective way in learning English is ____.A.to practise speaking, writing and feeling it | B.to forget your own native language | C.to translate everything into his own language | D.to memorize the English words and grammatical rules | 小题2:“Instead of helping you, your own language gets in your way.”This sentence means that memorizing your own language can ________.A.help you to study English well | B.stop you mastering English | C.make English easy to learn | D.help you notice mistakes | 小题3:Equally important is to feel the language. “to feel the language” here means________. A.to get a knowledge of English by touching | B.to be able to read and write English | C.to translate English into your own by imagining | D.to be able to experience the rich sensation of the language |

American researchers found females are the more talkative sex because of a special “language protein(蛋白质)” in the brain. The study, conducted by neuroscientists (神经学家)and psychologist from the University of Maryland, concluded that women talked more because they had more of the Foxp2 protein. The research, published in the Journal of Neuroscience, found that higher levels were found among humans that were women but in rats that were males. Their findings came after it was previously claimed that ladies speak about 20,000 words a day – over 13,000 more than men. "This study is one of the first to report a sex difference in the expression of a language-associated protein in humans or animals,” said Prof Margaret McCarthy, who led the study. In their study, the researchers attempted to determine what might make male rats more vocal than their female friends. They separated four-day-old rats from their mothers and then counted the number of times they cried out in the “ultrasonic range”, the frequencies higher than humans can hear, over five minutes. While both sexes called out hundreds of cries, the males called out twice as often, they found. But when the pups were returned to their mother’s cage, she fussed over her sons first. Tests conducted on the parts of the brain known to be associated with vocalcalls showed the male pups have up to twice as much Foxp2 protein as the females. The researchers then increased the production in the brains of female pups and reduced it in males. This led to the female rats crying out more often and their mothers showing more interest to them. In contrast, males became less “talkative”. The researchers then tested samples from ten children, aged between three and five, which showed that females had up to 30 per cent more of the Foxp2 protein than males, in a brain area key to language in humans. “Based on our observations, we assume higher levels of Foxp2 in girls and higher levels of Foxp2 in male rats is an indication that Foxp2 protein levels are associated with the more communicative sex,” said Prof McCarthy. "Our results imply Foxp2 as a component of the neurobiological basis of sex differences in vocal communication in mammals." 小题1:From the second paragraph, we can learn that ________.A.women always speak more words than men | B.men and male rats have low levels of language protein | C.women and male rats have similar levels of Foxp2 | D.McCarthy isn’t the first to find females more talkative | 小题2:The underlined phrase “fussed over” in the third paragraph probably means______.A.paid attention to | B.related to | C.put pressure on | D.counted on | 小题3:The researchers carried out the experiments on rats in order to _______.A.test which part of the brain is key to language in rats and humans | B.prove the levels of Foxp2 protein in humans and rats are different | C.determine the reason why female rats are more talkative than male rats | D.discover the association between Foxp2protein and vocal communication | 小题4:Which of the following can be the best title for the passage ?A.Tests on humans and rats | B.Why women are the talkative sex | C.Sex differences in Foxp2 protein | D.Foxp2 protein determines oral ability |
