A funny thing happened on the way to the communication revolution: we stopped talking to one another. I was walking in the park with a friend recently, and his cell phone rang, interrupting our conversation. There we were, walking and talking on a beautiful sunny day and suddenly, I became invisible, absent from the conversation. The telephone used to connect you to the absent. Now it makes people sitting next to you feel absent. Why is it that the more connected we get, the more disconnected I feel? Every advance in communication technology is a tragedy to the closeness of human interaction. With email and instant messaging over the Internet, we can now communicate without seeing or talking to one another. With voice-mail, you can conduct entire conversations without ever reaching anyone. If my mom has a question, I just leave the answer on her machine. As almost every contact we can imagine between human beings gets automated, the emotional distance index goes up. You can’t even call a person to get the phone number of another person any more. Directory assistance is almost always fully automated. I am not against modern technology. I own a cell phone, an ATM card, a voice-mail system, and an email account. Giving them up isn’t wise. They’re a great help to us. It"s some of their possible consequences that make me feel uneasy. More and more, I find myself hiding behind email to do a job meant for conversations or being relieved with voice-mail picking up because I don"t really have time to talk. The industry devoted to helping me keep in touch is making me lonelier. 小题1:Which of the following would be the best title of the passage?A.The Advance of Modern Technology | B.The Consequences of Communication Technology | C.The Story of Communication Revolution | D.The Automation of Modern Communication | 小题2:Which is NOT TURE according to the passage?A.The author has decided not to use his phone when he is with his friend. | B.Modern technology makes it hard for people to have a face-to-face talk. | C.The limited use of communication device brings much inconvenience to the author. | D.The industry intended to keep people in touch is taking them away from each other. | 小题3:The writer feels that the use of modern communication is ______.A.satisfying | B.encouraging | C.disappointing | D.embarrassing | 小题4:The passage implies that ______.A.modern technology is bridging the people | B.modern technology is separating the people | C.modern technology is developing too fast | D.modern technology is interrupting people |

In order to know a foreign language completely, four things are necessary. First, we must understand the language when we hear it spoken. Secondly, we must be able to speak it ourselves, correctly with confidence and without hesitation (犹豫). Thirdly, we must be able to write it. We must be able to make sentences that are correct in grammar. There is no short way to succeed in language learning. A good memory is a great help, but it is not enough only to memorize the rules from a grammar book. It is no much use learning by heart long lists of words and their meanings, studying the dictionary and so on. We must learn by using the language. If we are pleased with a few rules we have memorized, we are not really learning the language. We must “Learn through use”. Practice is important. We must practise speaking and writing the language whenever we can. 小题1:The most important things to learn a foreign language are .A.understanding and speaking | B.hearing, speaking, reading and writing | C.writing and understanding | D.memorizing and listening | 小题2:Someone hears and writes English very well, but he speaks it very badly. This is because .A.he doesn’t understand the language when he hears it spoken | B.he doesn’t have a good memory | C.he always remember lists of words and their meanings | D.he often hesitates to practise speaking it | 小题3:One can never learn a foreign language well only by .A.much practice | B.studying the dictionary | C.learning through use | D.using the language | 小题4:Which of the following is the most important in learning a foreign language?A.A good memory. | B.Speaking. | C.Practice. | D.Writing. | 小题5:“Learn through use” means .A.we use a language in order to learn it | B.we learn foreign language in order to use it | C.we can learn a language well while we are using it | D.both B and C |

The ozone layer(臭氧层) is a thin layer of gas around the earth. It forms a special “blanket” around the planet. This “blanket” protects the earth from dangerous rays produced by the sun. Without the ozone layer, the earth’s climate could warm to dangerous levels. This increase in temperature would threaten our survival. Scientists recently have discovered a hole in the ozone layer above the Antarctica. Now there is great concern that this warning has started, endangering all life on the earth. What has destroyed part of the ozone layer? Scientists do not know for sure. They suspect that our popular spray cans (喷漆罐) have played a part in the damage. Many spray cans contain dangerous gases. These gases might have destroyed the ozone layer fifteen miles above the earth’s surface, The chemicals used in refrigerators (冰箱) and air conditioners may contribute to the problem, too. Many scientists believe that the destruction of the ozone layer is a serious problem for people everywhere. Global warming could change weather patterns around the world. Farmers and ranchers(牧场主) could find it more and more difficult to produce enough food for the earth’s people. If more of the sun’s dangerous rays reached the earth, there also could be an increase in skin cancers. Some skin cancers might cause people to die. Although some scientists do not believe there is a serious danger, obviously no one wants to take any chance on such a possibility. Can scientists repair the hole in the ozone layer? They really don’t know the answer to that question. Can people do anything to save the ozone layer that the earth still has? Scientists stress the need to limit the use of spray cans and other items that contain the dangerous gases. This will not be an easy task. People all over the world use these items. Solving the problem certainly will require commitment and cooperation from everyone. 小题1:The ozone layer exists to _____. A.warm the earth to a proper level for life | B.protect the earth from dangerous sun rays | C.make all life on the earth in a dangerous situation | D.prevent human beings from being harmed from the earth | 小题2:Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage? A.Scientists aren’t sure what has destroyed part of the ozone layer. | B.Scientists recently have discovered a hole in the Antarctica. | C.Scientists prove that spray cans have destroyed part of the ozone layer. | D.Global warming doesn’t affect weather patterns around the world. | 小题3: The following may do harm to the ozone layer EXCEPT ______. A.spray cans | B.refrigerators | C.ranchers | D.air conditioners | 小题4: Saving the ozone layer needs everyone’s effort because _____. A.scientists are badly in need of others’ help | B.items containing dangerous gases should be forbidden | C.scientists can’t afford so much money to take measures | D.people all over the world use items containing dangerous gases |

School education is very important and useful. Yet no one can learn everything from school. A teacher, no matter how much he knows, can not teach his students everything they want to know. The teacher’s job is to show his students how to learn. He teaches them how to read and how to think. So much more is to be learned outside school by the students themselves. It is always more important to know how to study by oneself than to learn some facts or a formula by heart. It is actually quiet easy to learn a certain fact in history or a formula(公式) in mathematics. But it is very difficult to use a formula in working out a maths problem. Great scientist, such as Einstein, Newton and Galileo, didn’t get everything from school. But they were all so successful and invented so many things for men. They worked hard all their lives, wasting not a single moment. They would ask many questions as they read and they did thousands of experiments. 小题1:According to the passage, a good teacher should be one who is to_________.A.help his students to gain a good memory. | B.train his students’ ability to learn | C.teach his students everything he knows | D.have his students studying long hours | 小题2:If a student want to learn better, the most important thing for him to do is_______.A.to learn all the useful facts and formula by heart | B.to do everything as his teacher have said in class | C.to absorb (吸收) as much knowledge from his teacher as possible | D.to think more while he is studying | 小题3:The main reason for the success of the great scientists is that________.A.the teachers who had taught them were all experienced. | B.they used to work and study without a moment’s rest. | C.they had received more schooling than other people | D.they know how to study and worked hard | 小题4:What’s the good advice the writer gives us?A.We can learn better without teachers | B.We should do more asking and thinking while studying | C.We should pay enough attention to classroom | D.Book knowledge is of little use |

“Get your hands off me, I have been stolen,” the laptop, a portable(便携式的)computer, shouted. That is a new solution to laptop computer theft: a program that lets owners give their property a voice when it has been taken. The program allows users to display alerts(警报)on the missing computer’s screen and even to set a spoken message. Tracking software for stolen laptops has been on the market for some time, but this is thought to be the first that allows owners to give the thief a piece of their mind. Owners must report their laptop missing by visiting to a website, which sends a message to the model: a red and yellow “lost or stolen” sign appears on its screen when it is started. Under the latest version(版本) of the software, users can also send a spoken message. The message can be set to reappear every 30 seconds, no matter how many times the thief closes it. “One customer sent a message saying, ‘You are being tracked. I am right at your door’,” said Carrie Hafeman, chief executive (主管) of the company which produces the program, Retriever. In the latest version, people can add a spoken message. For example, the laptop’s speakers will say: “Help, this laptop is reported lost or stolen. If you are not my owner, please report me now.” The Retriever software package(软件包), which costs $29.95 (£21) but has a free trial period, has the functions of many security software programs. Owners can remotely switch to an alternative password if they fear that the thief has also got hold of the access details. If a thief accesses the internet with the stolen laptop, Retriever will collect information on the internet service provider in use, so that the police can be alerted to its location. Thousands of laptops are stolen every year from homes and offices, but with the use of laptops increasing, the number stolen while their owners are out and about has been rising sharply. Other security software allows users to erase(删除)data remotely or lock down the computer. 小题1:The expression “to give the thief a piece of their mind” can be understood as “_______”.A.to give the thief an alert mind | B.to express the owners’ anger to the thief | C.to remind the thief of his conscience | D.to make the thief give up his mind | 小题2:Different from other security software, Retriever can ______.A.record the stealing process | B.help recognize the lost laptop | C.lock down the computer remotely | D.send a spoken message | 小题3:One function of the program is that it allows the owner to ______ at a distance.A.change some access details for switching on the laptop | B.turn on the laptop by using the original password | C.operate the laptop by means of an alternative password | D.erase the information kept in the stolen laptop | 小题4:Which of the following can best summarize the main idea of the passage?A.With no Retriever, thousands of laptops are stolen every year. | B.A new software provides a means to reduce laptop theft. | C.Retriever has helped to find thieves and lost computers. | D.A new program offers a communication platform with the thief. |

An American educational expert, Frederick M. Hess, says that a long summer vacation doesn’t make sense in today’s world. This summer, 50 million kids will spend much time talking online, watching TV, playing video games and asking older brothers or sisters to take them to the supermarket. They will also be putting their academic futures at risk. During much of the 20th century, many Americans worked in factories that did not need a college degree but still offered a high salary. Also, in the 19th century, there was no air condition. And poor hygiene (卫生) meant that crowded schools had health risks. Things have changed. For today’s students, academic skills are key to future success. Many countries don’t give kids an American-style summer vacation. They offer no more than seven consecutive (连续的) weeks of vacation. Most American school districts offer up to 13 weeks. To compete in global marketplace, Americans must be prepared to go up against international competitors. Summer vacation also causes challenges for today’s families. In the 1960s, more than 60% of families had a stay-at-home mum. Now, two-thirds of American children live families where every adult works. For these families, summer vacation can be more burden than break. Someone must watch the kids. But the biggest problem may be how summer vacation hurts academic achievement. Scientist have found that disadvantaged students lose important ground in the summertime. A school year can allow time-limited teachers to conduct richer and more imaginative lessons. Schools would have more time for sports, languages, music and the arts. 小题1:Before the 20th century, a long summer vacation might ______.A.reduce income for Americans | B.reduce health risks for students | C.cause career failure for Americans | D.cause loss in global market for America | 小题2: How long does an American-style summer vacation last?A.No more than two months. | B.Less than three months. | C.As long as three months. | D.As long as four months. | 小题3:According to the text, who will benefit from a long school year?A.American students, teachers and parents. | B.American students, parents and shop owners. | C.American students, parents and international competitors. | D.American students, teachers and international competitors. | 小题4:How many reasons did the writer give to support his/her opinion?A.One. | B.Two. | C.Three. | D.Four. |
