                                                              The Scientific Method
Did you ever wonder why the water level in a glass doesn"t change when the ice in the glass melts
(融化)? To find out why, you can use the scientific method. Used by scientists in various situations, the
scientific method is also a clear and logical way to solve many real-world problems, as the procedure
below indicates.

Steps in the Scientific Method Examples
State the problem or question."Why doesn"t the water level in a glass rise when ice melts?"
Collect information about the problem,
using  your own observations and
research.
You already know that ice is frozen water. From your research,
you learn that water and ice are made of water molecules (分子).
"Form a hypothesis, or a best guess
based on the information."
The molecules in water appear to be closer together
than they are in ice.
Test the hypothesis by doing an
experiment.
Fill four glasses with ice. Then pour water over the ice and fill
each glass to the rim. As the ice melts, you observe that the water
does not spill over the top of the glasses. Each time you repeat the
experiment, you get the same results.
Draw a conclusion based on your results.Molecules are closer together in water than they are in ice.

A volcanic eruption(喷发) in Iceland has sent ash across northern Europe. Airlines have stopped or
changed the flights across the Atlantic Ocean, leaving hundreds of passengers stuck in the airports.
Grimsvotn is one of the largest and most active volcanoes in Europe. What makes Grimsvotn different
is that it lies under a huge glacier(冰川) of ice up to 12 meters thick. The hot volcano heats up the ice
above it, which then forms a layer(层) of water between the glacier and the volcano.
This layer of water puts pressure on the volcano, keeping it stable(稳定). As the water flows out from
under the glacier, the pressure lifts. The lava(岩浆) from the volcano then comes up to the surface. This
is exactly what happened today.
Now, airlines have to make changes to their flights so as not to fly through the clouds of volcanic ash.
According to KLM one of Europe" s biggest airlines, airplanes cannot go under the cloud or over it.
Going through the cloud can result in ash getting stuck in the airplane" s engines, causing damage to the
plane.
The eruption has also caused problems for animals in Iceland. The volcano left ash and sharp
glass-like rocks all over the countryside. Farmers are keeping their animals inside to stop them from
eating ash-covered glass or the sharp object.

1. What makes Grimsvotn different from other volcanoes?

A. It is below ice.
B. It lies under the sea.
C. It is the largest volcano.
D. Its lava affects the airlines.

2. What keeps Grimsvotn stable?

A. The slow flow of water.
B. The low water temperature.
C. The thick glacier.
D. The water pressure.

3. Which of the following is the result of the volcanic eruption?

A. People stop traveling in Europe.
B. Airlines suffer from the loss of planes.
C. It becomes dangerous for animals to eat outside.
D. Farmers have lost many of their animals.

4. This text is most probably taken from____

A. a research paper
B. a newspaper report
C. a class presentation
D. a geography textbook

meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin.
After more than a year of hard work and with a little good luck, Li fulfilled her dream. On October
11, 2004, the 16-year-old girl joined a team of Chinese journalists who went to the Kremlin, in Moscow,
to interview Putin.
Li felt nervous before talking with Putin. "But his greeting and warm smile put me at ease," she said.
Li admires Putin very much, because of his strong will and style of leadership. "He looks very cool,"
Li said. During her interview, Li asked Putin whether he plans to educate his two teenage daughters to be
officials in the future. Putin smiled and answered he hopes they can do whatever job suits their interests
and personalities.
Although Li would only have several minutes, she started working on her interview questions last
August after applying for the opportunity. "Journalists work is by no means easy. You need to do lots
of homework on your interviewee," she said. She read many books about Putin and Russia in her spare
time.?
Li"s parents encouraged her to be a student journalist. "We fully support her, as long as it does not
affect her studies," said her father. Previously in her job for a student magazine, Chinese Young
Journalists, she wrote a letter to President Hu Jintao during the SARS epidemic.

confidence to speak with important people were not the things she could learn in class.?

In order to know a foreign language thoroughly(完全地), four things are necessary. First, we must
understand the language when we hear it spoken. Secondly, we must be able to speak it ourselves,
correctly with confidence(自信) and without hesitation(犹豫). Thirdly, we must be able to write it. We
must be able to make sentences that are correct in grammar.

language. If we are pleased with a few rules we have memorized, we are not really learning the language. We must "Learn through use". Practice is important. We must practise speaking and writing the language whenever(无论何时) we can.
