[1]It seems parents have long been right. Going to bed early is key to getting enough sleep and helping adolescents feel on top of the world, a new study reported. [2]A lack of sleep among youngsters may trigger depression and suicidal thoughts, according to the study by the Columbia University Medical Center. [3]"Our results are consistent with the theory that inadequate sleep is a risk factor for depression, working with other risk and protective factors through multiple possible causal ways to the development of this mood disorder," said lead author James Gangwisch. [4]"Adequate quality sleep could therefore be a preventative measure against depression and a treatment for depression," he added in the study published in the Friday issue of Sleep magazine. [5]The study followed the nightly habits of some 15,659 college and high-school students, and found those who consistently turned in after midnight had a 24 percent higher risk of depression than those who _______ before 10:00 pm. Night owls also ran a 20 percent higher risk of battling suicidal thoughts, the study added. [6]The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends that adolescents should sleep at least nine hours or more a night. Those who were tucked in before 10:00 pm reported they slept on average about eight hours and 10 minutes. But that amount of sleep dropped significantly for those in bed after midnight. [7]And adolescents who slept five hours or less a night were 71 percent more likely to suffer depression and 48 percent more at risk of becoming suicidal, the study said. [8]"It is a common perception and societal expectation that adolescents do not need as much sleep as pre- adolescents. Yet studies suggest that adolescents may actually require more sleep." said Gangwisch. [9]"Studies have found that adolescents do not go to bed early enough to make up for earlier school start time. And transitions to earlier school start times have been shown to be associated with significant sleep deprivation." |

It"s not easy being a teenager (13至19岁青少年)-nor is it easy being the parent of a teenager. You can make your child feel angry, hurt, or misunderstood by what you say without realizing it yourself. It is important to give your child the space he needs to grow while gently letting him know that you you"ll still be there for him when he needs you. Expect a lot from your child, just not everything. Except for health and safety problems, such as drug use or careless driving; consider everything else open to discussion. If your child is unwilling to discuss something, don"t insist he tell you what"s on his mind. The more you insist, the more likely that he"ll clam up. Instead, let him attempt to solve (解决) things by himself. At the same time, remind him that you"re always there for him should he seek advice or help. Show respect for your teenager"s privacy (隐私). Never read him his mail or listen in on personal conversions. Teach your teenager that the family phone is for the whole family. If your child talks on the family"s telephone for too long, tell him he can talk for15 minutes, but then he must stay off the phone for at least an equal period of time. This not only frees up the line so that other family members can make and receive calls, but teaches your teenager moderation (节制). What causes an earthquake? An earthquake is caused by rocks moving underground. The surface of the earth is made up of about 20 huge plates. The plates are thousands of miles wide and many miles thick. Like turtles with their shells, they carry oceans and continents right on their backs. All the earth"s plates are constantly in motion, although they move very slowly, maybe an inch a year. They push each other, trying to slip under or over each other, or to slide past one another. Earthquakes often happen when two plates come together. Along the plates where the plates meet, there is a kind of crack in the earth"s surface called a fault. The most famous fault in the United States is the San Andreas Fault, which runs 600 miles through California and is more than 30 million years old. An earthquake happens along a fault where two plates rub together while moving in different directions. The earth shakes and shivers and vibrates like a rubber band that"s been snapped. Those vibrations are picked up by an instrument which enables experts to figure out where the earthquake occurs and how strong it is. Scientists measure an earthquake"s strength by what they have named the Richter Scale. The Scale runs from zero to nine, with nine being the most powerful. Sometimes an earthquake occurs so far below the surface, we can hardly feel it on top. Sometimes an earthquake is so strong that it has more power than a nuclear explosion. An earthquake can last five seconds or up to ten minutes and create enough heat to melt any rock. The purpose is to let children learn from experience at an age when financial mistakes are not very costly. The amount of money that parents give to children to spend as they wish differs from family to family. Timing is another consideration. Some children get a weekly allowance. Others get a monthly allowance. In any case, parents should make clear what, if anything, the child is expected to pay for with the money. At first, young children may spend all of their allowance soon after they receive it. If they do this, they will learn the hard way that spending must be done with a budget (预算). Parents are usually advised not to offer more money until the next allowance. The object is to show young people that a budget demands choices between spending and saving. Older children may be responsible enough to save money for larger costs, like clothing or electronics. Many people who have written on the subject of allowance say it is not a good idea to pay your child for work around the home. These jobs are a normal part of family life. Paying children to do extra work around the house, however, can be useful. It can even provide an understanding of how a business works. Allowances give children a chance to experience the three things they can do with money. They can share it in the form of gifts or giving it to a good cause. They can spend it by buying things they want. Or they can save it. | 1. What is special about children"s learning financial management by experience? | A. They learn more quickly. B. Judging from the article, it is all right if a couple gives their son an allowance ____. | A. regularly twice every month B. whenever he has run out of money C. telling him to ask for permission before spending D. without telling him what to spend on | 4.
