We may be very pleased with the rapid progress we have made in every field of study. But the
way to test a student"s knowledge and ability still remains as poor as it was, We have almost done
nothing to improve our examination system.
It is well known that the examination system we are now using may be a good way of testing a
student"s memory, but it can tell you nothing about a student"s ability. It does no good to students
and teachers.
As soon as a child begins school,he enters a world of examination that will decide his future of job.
In fact a good examination system should train a student to think for himself. But it now does
nothing about that. So students are encouraged to member what is taught. It does not enable them to
gain more and note knowledge. The students who come out first in the examination often may not be
the best in their studies.
Besides, the examinations often force teachers to train students what to do with the coming
examination from time to time. There must be some simpler and better way to test a student" s ability
besides knowledge. And that is what we should do at once.

1. Now little has been done to________. A. decide a student"s job
B. test a student"s ability
C. test a student"s knowledge
D. test a student"s memory 2. The examination system we are now using can only make the students________.

A. gain more and more knowledge
B. make rapid progress
C. remember what is taught
D. think for themselves

3. In order to make students gain high marks in the coming examination, teachers have to________. A. develop their students" ability
B. fill their students" heads with much information
C. teach freely
D. teach their students how to study 4. The passage tells us about the importance of________. A. getting examination system improved
B. taking examinations
C. testing a student" s knowledge
D. working hard at all lessons

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项.选项中有两项为多余选项。Dear editor,
Several days ago, I heard that a dear friend of mine had killed herself. I was deep in sorrow by the sudden news. I can"t keep calm any longer. 1_____.
Life is so precious. If we can slip into death in an impulsive (冲动的) moment, what use in all our
efforts and hopes? Our families, our ambitions, everything is flung into total darkness. 2_____.
Nevertheless, the suicide rate increases year by year, particularly of young people. Reasons may vary
from person to person, 3_____.
First, today"s young people are morally weak. They hunger for success but can not face failure; they are eager to be understood but afraid of opening their hearts to others. They live in a wide world, from east to west, ancient to present, but their hearts beat in a narrow desert, closed tight, unable to communicate. Each becomes an isolated fortress (孤堡), lonely, and weak.
4_____. As a young teacher, she was devoted to her work but was disappointed with her students" occasional failures. She fell in love with a colleague but he deserted her. With no close friends, disappointed at work and in love, death seemed to her the only remaining choice and she took it.
Another reason for the weakness of today"s youth, in my opinion, comes from society"s pressures.
5_____. On the other hand, society refuses to accept that children sometimes do fail. But failure is more important because it can teach the young how to win next time.
What can we do to save the desperate young?A. I"m always thinking about life and death
B. yet I think they share something in common
C. The young are forced to try too hard to succeed
D. My friend is a good example of that
E. And death allows no time for regret
F. people love success and are afraid of failure
G. failure is the mother of success

选项中有两项为多余选项。     Have you ever seen any students whose trousers hang so low you can see their underwear?
What do you  think of that? Fashionable? Some of today"s teenagers are big fans of such a look.
1____         _.
The headmaster of a school in central Italy has asked students to stop wearing low-rise jeans
that expose underwear and parts of the body. His request came after a class trip, when he saw one
boy"s baggy trousers slide to his feet. 2______________.
But in Italy, a nation that takes fashion very seriously, the suggestion caused a debate among
parents, teachers and students. The issue is whether the headmaster"s request will limit students"
freedom- or whether dress in Italian schools is too casual.
3______________."We do not want to kick fashion out," the headmaster explained, "but
extrems (极端) of fashion like this are not right in school." Many other schools have now requested
that their students also stop wearing such trousers.
4 _________. Ludovica Gaudio, 14, wore extremely low trousers exposing orange underwear
in class. It was cold, so she wore a matching orange scarf. 5 _________________. "I don"t really
feel comfortable in those sort of jeans," said Sarah Lattanzi, "in winter, when dressed like that, it"s
quite cold and I am afraid my stomach will ache."A But recently this trend has been at the center of an argument in Italian middle schools.
