Here are two letters in WORKWORRIES, a column in a newspaper:
Dear Ariel,
I got a job offer from a high-tech company with a fairly satisfactory paycheck and benefits.Even the work environment is cool. But I heard that the job requires a lot of overtime and even weekends.I know it"s important for newcomers to work hard to get their feet planted firmly on the ground, but I"m scared of the idea of having nearly no free time.I still need to find a girlfriend. So, shall I accept the job or give it up for another one with much less pay and more freedom?
Amoretto
Dear Amoretto,
I have two things to say: First, you"re lucky to have such an excellent offer, especially at a time when so many qualified people are struggling to find any work at all; and second, you can"t figure out your work-life balance until you"re actually working.
Take the job. You"ll be learning, doing interesting things, working in a cool environment, and making money. If you"re given a contract (合同), make sure you understand the terms before you sign.Ask your boss how many hours a week you"re expected to work.If they tell you a number that is much lower than what you find once you"re working, you"ll be in a better position to talk to them about it.
Give your work 100 percent.Work energetically and efficiently. If you"re dedicated and focused, you might accomplish more than your co-workers in less time.Showing yourself to be a productive and talented worker for the beginning will give you more bargaining power. Finally, remember that taking a job doesn"t have to be a life commitment.Try to give it at least a year (two is better). If you"re really miserable after that time, look for another job that will give you more freedom.By then, you"ll have workplace experience, bosses and colleagues who can speak positively about your work and some savings.Good luck!
Ariel

A popular saying goes,“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.”However, that"s not really true.Words have the power to build us up or tear us down.It doesn"t matter whether the words come from someone else or ourselves—the positive and negative effects are just as lasting.
We all talk to ourselves sometimes. We"re usually too embarrassed to admit it,though. In fact,we really shouldn"t be because more and more experts believe talking to ourselves out loud is a healthy habit.
This“self—talk”helps us motivate ourselves, remember things, solve problems, and calm ourselves down.Be aware, though, that as much as 77%of self—talk tends to be negative. So in order to stay positive,we should only speak words of encouragement to ourselves. We should also be quick to give ourselves a pat on the back .The next time you finish a project,do well in a test,or finally clean your room, join me in saying“Good job!”
Often, words come out of our mouths without us thinking about the effect they will have. But we should be aware that our words cause certain responses in others. For example, when returning an item to a store,we might use warm, friendly language during the exchange. And the clerk will probably respond in a similar manner.Or unkind and critical language will most likely cause the clerk to be defensive.
Words possess power because of their lasting effect. Many of us regret something we once said. And we remember unkind words said to us! Before speaking,we should always ask ourselves:Is it true? Is it loving? Is it needed? If what we want to say doesn"t pass this test, then it"s better left unsaid.
Words possess power:both positive and negative. Those around us receive encouragement when we speak positively. We can offer hope, build self—esteem(自尊) and motivate others to do their best. Negative words destroy all those things. Will we use our words to hurt or to heal? The choice is ours.
60.The main idea of the first paragraph is that________.
A.words have a lasting effect on us
B.inspiring words give us confidence
C.negative words may let us down
D.not sticks and stones but words will hurt us
61.It is unnecessary to feel embarrassed when we talk to ourselves because______.
A.almost everybody has the habit of talking to themselves
B.talking to ourselves always gives us courage
C.we can benefit from talking to ourselves
D.it does no harm to have“self—talk”when we are alone
62.The underlined part in the third paragraph means that we should also occasionally_____.
A.remind ourselves              B.make ourselves relaxed
C.praise ourselves               D.give ourselves amusement
63.The author would probably hold the view that_______.
A.encouraging words are sure to lead to kind offers
B.negative words may motivate us to make more progress
C.people tend to remember friendly words
D.it is better to think twice before talking to others

Using the Internet and CD-ROM databases in the library
Bramley College now has full electronic information resources in the College Library to help you in your studies. On CD-ROM in the library we have about fifty databases (数据库), including many statistical sources. Want to know the average rainfall in Tokyo? It’s easy to find out.
You can conduct your own CD-ROM search for no charge, and you can print out your results on the library printers using your library photocopying card. If you are not sure how to conduct a search for yourself, librarians can do it for you , but we charge $5 each time for this service, no matter how long or how short a time it takes.
All library workstations have access to the Internet, so you can find the Web-based information you need quickly and easily. If you are unfamiliar with using the Internet, help is available in several ways. You can start with the online tutorial ( 指南) Netstart. The tutorial will take you through the basic step to using the Internet, at any time convenient to you. If you prefer, ask one of the librarians for Internet advice ( at times between 8:00 am and 12:00 am weekdays ) or attend one of the introductory group sessions that are held in the first two weeks of each term.
A word of warning: demand for access to library workstations is very high, so you are strongly advised to book a workstation, and we have to limit your use to a maximum of one hour at any one time. Also, use of the computers is limited to students only, so you may be asked to show your Student Identification Card to make a booking, or while using the workstations.

Every child is unique and has interests and wants that are specific to him or her. As parents of many children, it takes a lot of effort to identify the special qualities of each child and use them to be an effective influence in their young lives. What’s more , parents need to work to guide each child into their place in the family and make sure that the child is content and able to grow as a person.
Establishing  tasks in the home for each child helps  begin to lay  relational boundaries  in place. Each child should have an area  that becomes his or hers to maintain. Household chores (家务活 ) fall into this category. However, an order for answering the phone or doorbell can also be a task.  Reward each accomplished task in small ways like a compliment ( 赞扬). Money is not as  effective as personal attention.
Don’t buy a gift or treat for one without including the others. Even on birthdays give every child a small gift that they can enjoy opening while the birthday child opens his or her pile of gifts or larger gift. It’s not a really pricey thing. Our children never felt left out at the other child’s birthday or special occasion.
When buying clothes or other necessities, it can often be too much of a budget strain ( 紧张) to buy everything for all at once.  Make sure every child understands that their turn will come. If you buy back to school clothes, be certain to have each one a new outfit to wear by the first day of school.  Start early so each child can receive  parental attention before heading out.
Don’t fall into the trap of bragging ( 夸耀) on A’s by a smart or overachieving child and ignoring the C’s of a average child. Encourage them to do their best and brag on their best , not the letter grade received.
72. The passage is intended for________.
A. the only child in a family           B. the children who have sisters or brothers
C. the parents with more than one child   D. the parents with only one child

A. buy him /her a gift as soon as possible    B. try to take good care of him /her
C. give him /her some money as a reward    D. give him /her praise
74. On birthdays the author would like to_____.
A. give each child a small gift           B. give the birthday child a gift only
C. give all children gifts except the birthday child
D. give the birthday child smaller gifts than others
75. What does the author mainly want to tell readers in the passage?
A. Children should learn to do housework.
B. Be fair while making each child feel special.
C. Parents should encourage their children as much as possible.
D. Parents should buy their children new clothes before the first day of school.

Competition for admission to the country’s top private schools has always been tough. This is spreading from Manhattan to the rest of the country. Precise 50 data on private schools are unavailable, but interviews with representatives of independent and religious schools all told the same 51: too many applicants, higher rejection rates. Surveys indicate that Americans’ No. 1 52 is education. 53 the long economic boom(繁荣) has given parents more income, many are turning to private schools, even at price tags of well over $10,000 a year. “We’re getting applicants from a broader area, 54, than we ever have in the past,” said Besty Haugh of the Latin School of Chicago, which experienced a 20 percent increase in 55 this year.
The problem is that while demand has increased, supply has not. “Every year, there are a few children who do not find places, but this year, for the first time that I know of, there are a(n) 56 number of children who don’t have places,” said Krents, who also heads a private-school admissions group in New York.
So what can parents do to give their 4-year-old a(n) 57? Schools know there is no simple way to pick a class when children are so young. Many schools give preference to boys or girls or alumni(校友) children. Some use lotteries. But most rely on a 58 of subjective and objective measures: tests that at best 59 developmental maturity and learning potential, interviews with parents and observation of applicants in classroom settings. They also want a diverse mix. Children may end up on a waiting list simply because their birthdays 60 at the wrong time year, or because too many applicants were boys.
The worst thing a parent can do is to pressure preschoolers to perform --- 61, by pushing them to read or do math exercises 62 they’re ready. Instead, the experts say, parents should take a breath and look for 63. Another year in preschool may be all that’s needed. Parents, meanwhile, may need a more 64 mind about relatively unknown private schools --- or about magnet(具有吸引力的)schools in the public system. There’s no sign of the private-school boom letting up.
