As a senior, my future is always on my mind. To be exact, thoughts of the future
题型:不详难度:来源:
As a senior, my future is always on my mind. To be exact, thoughts of the future have kept me up countless nights and made me worry enough to do poorly on more than one test. Because of this, words of wisdom are a source of comfort. Steve Jobs gave a speech to Stanford’s graduating class in 2005 and his words resound repeatedly in my mind whenever I think about my future. It wasn’t always like that, though. It started when I became a junior, when college came into view. It’s the first big step to making your life your own. So when Jobs discussed his life as a student, some fears were eased. He, too, felt the need to attend college to make something of himself. He faced what many are extremely afraid of: uncertainty. His lack of understanding caused him to stop attending college and focus on what he felt was important. His story had a happy ending, of course, since he certainly turned out well. This doesn’t mean that students shouldn’t attend college, but rather that they shouldn’t worry so much. You’ll get where you need to go, even if your path is a bit more winding(蜿蜒的)than you’d like. Jobs talked about the hardships in his work. His love of his work helped him carry on and he got where he was meant to be, which restates the point: don’t panic. One particular part of his speech stayed with me. Steve Jobs quoted(引用)the saying “Stay hungry, stay foolish” and it has become my motto. Staying foolish is realizing that you are still a fool, no matter how much you’ve learned or experienced. There is always more to explore. Staying hungry is wanting to find those things about which you are still uneducated. Steve Jobs’s level of success is attainable, and I aim to prove that. With the will power to go into the world living every day like it’s my last and allowing the future to take care of itself, I will do great things. In the last moments of my life, I’ll be proud of what I have done and hope to have all the wisdom a person could wish for. 小题1:The author felt worried when _________.A.he had to take tests at school | B.he thought about his future | C.he had lots of sleepless nights | D.he searched for words of wisdom | 小题2:It is suggested in Paragraphs 1 and 2 that _________.A.Steve Jobs didn’t attend college | B.Steve Jobs failed because of his decision | C.the author is a college student | D.the author cares much about his future | 小题3:What did the author gain from Jobs’s speech?A.Courage to drop out of school. | B.Confidence in defeating Jobs. | C.Interest in computer industry. | D.Bravery to face uncertainties. | 小题4:What did NOT Steve Jobs encourage students to do in his speech?A.Have the desire to learn more. | B.Be content with what they know. | C.Stay calm in the face of hardships. | D.Be modest so as to learn more. | 小题5:The passage is mainly about _________.A.the wisdom drawn from a speech | B.the most impressive quote in life | C.a memorable meeting with Jobs | D.an experience of a speech |

“In only six days I lost seven pounds of weight.” “Two full inches in the first three days!” These are the kinds of statements used in magazine, newspaper, radio and television ads, promising new shapes and new looks to those who buy the medicine or the device. The promoters of products say they can shape the legs, slim the face, smooth wrinkles, or in some other way to add to beauty or desirability. Often such products are nothing more than money-making things for their promoters. The results they produce are questionable, and some are dangerous to health. To understand how these products can be legally promoted to the public, it is necessary to understand something of the laws covering their regulation. If the product is a drug, FDA(Food and Drug Administration)can require proof under the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act that is safe and effective before it is put on the market. But if the product is a device, FDA has no authority to require premarketing proof of safety or effectiveness. If a product already on the market is a danger to health, FDA can request the producer or distributor to remove it from the market voluntarily, or it can take legal action, including seizure(查封)of the product. One notable case a few years ago involved an electrical device called the Relaxacisor, which had been sold for reducing the waistline. The Relaxacisor produced electrical shocks to the body through contact pads. FDA took legal action against the distributor to stop the sale of the device on the grounds that it was dangerous to health and life. Obviously, most of the devices on the market have never been the subject of court proceedings(法律诉讼),and new devices appear continually. Before buying, it is up to the consumer to judge the safety or effectiveness of such items. 小题1:It can be inferred that the ads mentioned in the text are . .A.objective | B.costly | C.unreliable | D.illegal | 小题2:Which of the following is TRUE according to the text? A. The court is in charge of removing dangerous products. B. New products are more likely to be questionable. C. The production of a device must be approved by FDA. D. The promoters usually just care about profits. 小题3:FDA can ask for the proof of safety and effectiveness of a product A.if it is a drug | B.if it is a device | C.if its consumers make complaints | D.if its distributors challenge FDA’s authority | 小题4:The Relaxacisor is mentioned as .A.a product which was designed to produce electricity | B.a product whose distributor was involved in a legal case | C.a successful advertisement of a beauty product | D.an example of a quality beauty product | 小题5:The author intends to A.make consumers aware of the promoters’ false promises | B.show the weakness of the law on product safety | C.give advice on how to keep young and beautiful | D.introduce the organization of FDA |

阅读下面短文回答问题,将答案写到答题卡相应的位置上(注意题后的字数要求)。 In the United States, train transportation is unpopular compared with cars and airplanes. Most people like traveling by car or by air. Officials of the United States Department of Transportation made a study in 2001. The study is about how many miles Americans traveled by different means of transportation. They only studied trips longer than 50 miles. The study showed that fifty-six percent of all miles were traveled in personal vehicle. Forty-one percent were traveled in an airplane. Two percent were traveled in a bus. And less than one percent of miles were traveled in a train. Amtrak is the national provider of train transportation in the United States. In the past ten years, the number of its passengers has increased by eighteen percent. Although the number of passengers has increased, it is still very small now. In countries such as France, Germany, or Japan, more people use trains. There are several reasons why many people __________________________. Firstly, Americans love to drive their own cars. On highways, cars can travel as fast as trains. These highways connect all major cities in America.Secondly, many travelers like to be independent. When they use their own cars they can decide when to travel. Thirdly, many buses travel between major cities. Bus travel is less costly than train travel. In a huge country like the United States, cities are far away from each other. In some cases, travel from one city to another by train may take more than a day. Now we’re always hearing about road accident, and when we’re in a car we try to drive carefully, but how many of us take the same degree of care in our homes? Any large hospital will tell you the number of the accidents that happen in the home is almost the same as those on the road. One of the commonest and most dangerous causes of home accidents is wrong and careless use of electrical equipment. People will continue to use a loose plug or pull out a plug without first turning off the power. In spite of warnings, one will carry an electric heater into the bathroom when he is going to have a bath. Sometimes one forgets to cut off the power before mending a lamp or something else. All this will cause accidents. So the rule about anything that work by electricity is:Switch off before you touch anything and don’t pretend you know when you actually don’t. If you’ve got children in the house, it"s always best to keep medicines of any kind out of their reach. Otherwise, they may be taken for candies or a new kind of drink. When there are older people living with you, you have to take particular care in a number of ways in order to make them safe and happy. Fire, of course, is always a risk. So, remember not to dry clothes in front of fires, or leave stoves in the middle of rooms where they can easily be knocked over. And don’t forget to keep the children away from fire. Smoking, too, may cause fire. So you’d better give it up. Safety first may mean a little more time and care, but it may save you a lot of trouble. 小题1:According to the writer, we try to drive carefully in a car while __________. A.people should never be allowed to carry an electric heater into the bathroom | B.the improper use of the electrical equipment is the most dangerous cause of home accidents | C.people should cut off the power first before using the electrical equipment | D.both the children and the older people should be taken special care of at home | 小题3:It can be inferred in the text that our life at home will be much safer if __________. A.we know more about the accidents that happen in the home | B.all of us give up smoking as soon as possible | C.we take more time and care in our life | D.we keep the stoves at the corner of the rooms | 小题4:The main purpose of writing the text is __________.
