C Isn"t it astonishing how much time we spend talking about food? “Have you ever eaten …?” “What did you have for lunch?” and so on. And yet when you travel from one country to another, you will find that people have quite different feelings about food. People often feel that what they eat is normal (正常) and that what other people eat is strange or silly. In most parts of Asia, for example, no meal is complete without rice. In England, people eat potatoes every day. In the Middle East, bread is the main part of every meal. Eating like so many things we do, becomes a habit which is difficult to change. Americans like to drink a lot of orange juice and coffee. The English drink tea four or five times every day. Australians drink a great deal of beer, and the French drink wine every day. The sort of meat people like to eat also differs from one country to another. Horse meat is thought to be delicious in France. In Hong Kong, some people enjoy eating snakes. New Zealanders eat sheep, but they never eat goat meat. The Japanese don"t like to eat sheep meat because of its smell, but they enjoy eating raw fish (生鱼). So it seems that although eating is a topic we can talk about for hours, there is very little common sense in what we say it. People everywhere enjoy eating what they have always eaten, and there is very little we can do to change our eating habits. 64. Which of the following is true according to the article? A. All people have the same feeling about food. B. In most parts of Asia, people usually have rice for meals. C. People often consider other people to be strange or silly. D. The topic people spend time talking about is bread and meat. 65. People in different countries ___ . A. drink the same sort of wine B. have the same eating habit C. eat different kinds of meat D. have the same tea at different time within a day 66. The Japanese don"t like to eat sheep meat __ . A. because they dislike its smell B. because it is too expensive C. because it is easy to go bad D. because they think it will do harm to their health 67. English people drink tea four or five times a day _ . A. because they get thirsty easily B. because there is plenty of tea in Britain C. because of their drinking habit D. because they have enough time to do so |
D The fact that blind people can see things using other parts of their bodies apart from their eyes may help us to understand our feelings about color. If they can sense color differences, then perhaps we, too, are affected (影响) by color without knowing it. Salesmen have discovered by experience over a long period of time that sugar sells badly in green wrappings (包装), that blue foods are considered not agreeable to the taste ,and that cosmetics (化妆品) should never be packed in brown. These discoveries have grown into a whole subject of color psychology (心理学). Some of our preferences (偏爱) are clearly psychological. Dark blue is the color of the night sky and therefore connected with calm, while yellow is a day color connected with energy and encouragement. Experiments have shown that colors, partly because they are connected with psychology, also have a direct effect on people’s mind. People in bright red surroundings (环境) show an increase in breathing speed, heartbeat and blood pressure. Red is exciting. Pure blue has exactly the opposite effect; it is a calming color. Being exciting, red was chosen as the signal for danger, but a closer study shows that a bright yellow can produce a more basic state of alarm, so fire engines in some advanced areas are now rushing around in bright yellow colors that stop buses, trucks and cars. 65. The passage tells us that salesmen have _______. A. found out that colors affect sales B. discovered the relationship between color and psychology C. tried colors on blind people D. developed a special subject of color psychology 66. If people are exposed to (置身于) pure blue, _______. A. their body pressure rises B. they won’t easily feel nervous C. they want to taste blue foods D. they will feel like buying things 67. The most effective color in the passage for warning people is _____. A. red B. bright yellow C. dark blue D. green 68. Which of the following do you think is the best title of the passage? A. Color and Feelings B. Colors and Sales C. The Blind and Colors D. Preferences for Colors |
Farmer Ed Rawlings smiles as he looks at his orange trees. The young oranges are growing well in Florida"s weather. Warm sunshine and gentle rains, along with Ed Rawlings" expert care, will produce a good crop of oranges this year. But Ed has to fight against Florida"s changeable winter weather. In January and February, temperatures can destroy Ed"s entire orange, crop. Having farmed in Florida for the past 35 years, Ed Rawlings is prepared for the frosts(霜). When temperatures drop below freezing, Ed tries to save his crop by watering his orange trees. The water freezes and forms a thin layer (层)of ice on the trees. Strange as it may sound, this thin layer of ice actually keeps the fruit warm. What happens is simple. When the trees are watered, the water loses heat and becomes ice. The warmth of the heat it loses is sucked in by the fruit and keeps its temperature at a safe level. Ed Rawlings has effectively used this method(方法)to save many orange crops. But Ed still faces some difficulties. The trees should be watered at the exact moment the temperature drops to the freezing point. Also, just the right quantity of water must be used. Too much water can form a thick layer of ice that will break the trees" branches. Another difficulty is that wind blows away the heat. So Ed has to worry about not only when but also how often his trees should be watered, and how much water should be used. Computer technology may help Ed Rawlings with some of these worries. With equipment, air and soil temperatures and wind speed can be measured. The information is fed into a computer which can tell when temperatures drop to freezing. The computer can correctly decide the quantity of water to be used and how frequently the trees should be watered. Ed Rawlings will find looking after his orange trees a lot easier with the help of a computer, and we"ll all have the benefits(or advantages)of computer-age oranges. 1. The passage is mainly about _____ . A.a farmer"s expert care for his orange trees B. the different uses of computers C. growing oranges in Florida"s changeable weather D. different ways of frost protection 2. Ed tried to protect his crop by _____ . A. using a wind machine to drive away the cold air B. equipping his orange trees with a computer C. watering it at the proper time D. picking his fruit at the first sign of frost 3. In the writer"s eyes, computers _____ . A.are too expensive for small farmers B. can be a valuable tool for the farmer C. can be used to help oranges grow bigger D. cannot take the place of the farmer"s experience and judgement 4. Which of the following is NOT NECESSARY for Ed Rawlings to do? A. He should water the orange trees as soon as the temperature drops to the freezing point. B. He should decide the quantity of water for the orange trees. C. He has to water the orange trees more often in January and February. D. He has to judge how often he should water the orange trees. 5. According to the passage, the computer technology can _____ . A.get rid of the need for frost protection B. help the farmer get a better harvest C. tell the farmer why outdoor temperature changes D. prevent the temperature from dropping to the freezing point |
D Men usually want to have their own way. They want to think and act as they like. No one, however, can have his own way all the time. A man cannot live in society without considering the interests(利益) of others as well as his own interests. “Society” means a group of people with the same laws and the same way of life. People in society may make their own decisions, but these decisions ought not to be unjust(不公平) or harmful to others. One man’s decisions may so easily harm another person. For example, a motorist may be in a hurry to get to a friend’s house. He sets out, driving at full speed like a competitor in a motor race. There are other vehicles and also pedestrians (行人) on the road. Suddenly there is a crash. There are screams and confusion. One careless motorist has struck another car. The collision(碰撞) has injured two of the passengers and killed the third. Too many road accidents happen through the thoughtlessness of selfish drivers. We have governments, the police and the law courts to prevent or to punish such criminal acts. But in addition, all men ought to observe certain rules of conduct. Every man ought to behave with consideration for other men. He ought not to steal, cheat, or destroy the property(财产) of others. There is no place of this sort of behavior in a civilized society. 1. A man cannot have his own way all the time because________. A. he may have no interest in other people B. he has to share the same interest with the people in the same society C. his decisions are always unjust D. his decisions always harm other people 2. According to the passage, people in a civilized society should usually______. A. be honest to each other B. be cautions in doing everything C. behave in a responsible way D. punish criminal acts 3. The purpose of this passage is to_________. A. tell people how to behave in society B. illustrate the importance of laws C. teach people how to prevent criminal acts D. persuade people not to make their own decisions 4. It is implied that there will be fewer road accidents if_______. A. the drivers are more considerate(体贴的) of other people B. there are fewer cars or walkers in the street C. the motorists are not always in a hurry D. the passengers are calm but not confused before the accidents 5. We can draw a conclusion that_______. A. the government should contribute more efforts B. the criminals should be more severely punished C. man should be more strict with himself D. man should have more and more similar interests |
