Working AT home is increasing in popularity as a means of escaping from nine-to-five office life. Why work under the constant watch of your boss when you can work in front of the TV in your carpet slippers? Armed with all the office essentials—telephone, computer, e-mail and fax, many workers believe they can work as effectively as their colleagues in the office. Being able to work wherever you like: from a busy city to a beautiful village, and make working from home an attractive choice, you can even work on a canal boat, like one Internet firm in the Midlands, US. So what will become of the office of tomorrow? I believe it is likely that many could disappear into cyberspace. To minimize office overheads in inner-city areas, companies will apply a workforce made up of a network of home workers linked by an advanced communication and information system. A central processing computer would be controlled by the manager who sends out work schedules and oversees the activity of each employee. As a successor to the Web Cam, a video screen would be created, as the need for more natural form of interaction than e-mail or telephone becomes greater. Capturing the mood and expressions of work colleagues, managers would have the ability to view several employees at once on their screen. Employees would be encouraged to feed any information that may be useful to fellow workers into the computer to make the company work more effectively. As the company"s life blood, the computer would contain a record of all conversations and correspondence for future reference, and hold confidential information such as accounts in password protected areas. In the office of tomorrow, with daily life captured in detail, the case for firing employees could be more clear cut. 6.The first paragraph mainly focuses on _________. A. the office to working at home B. preference to working at home C. working effectively in the office D. one Internet firm in the Midlands, UK 7.The office of the future will be ________. A. in space B. a network C. in inner-city areas D. a central processing computer 8.In Paragraph 2, the word “ oversee” probably means “_________”. A. overlook B. organize C. make out D. watch over 9.A video screen would be built because _________. A. the Web Cam needs it B. it is useful to fellow workers C. e-mail or telephone is out of date D. managers can clearly spot employees 10.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage? A. You can get accounts without password. B. Computers would record workers’ blood types. C. You can get informationg of your fellow workers easily. D. Firing employees in the office of tomorrow could be largely reduced. |

Prisoner Mitchell King had a visitor— his wife. King was serving a six-year prison term in Auckland, New Zealand for armed robbery. But his wife didn’t want to be away from him for that long. So they held hands and they stuck. She’s rubbed her palms with super glue. Their new-found closeness was short-lived. And their separation painful. Her technique is not one I"d recommend(introduce) for a closer relationship. But if you want more closeness; if you desire relationships that are deeper and broader, more meaningful and longer-lasting, then remember the word "TRAVEL." T is for TRUST. Trust is the glue that holds people together (not Super Glue). A relationship will go nowhere without it. R is for RESPECT. "Do not save your loving speeches for your friends till they are dead; speak them rather now instead," writes Anna Cummins. It"s about respecting others and letting them know that you value them. A is for AFFECTION. Sometimes affection means love. Sometimes it means a touch. Always it means kindness. V is for VULNERABILITY(harm). Though we may feel afraid to let another too close, no relationship will go anywhere without risking vulnerability. Entrepreneur Jim Rohn says, "The walls we build around us to keep out the sadness also keep out the joy." And the love. E is for EMOTIONAL INTIMACY(亲密). Learn to be open. Learn to communicate freely. What kinds of relationships you make are largely determined by how openly you have learned to communicate. L is for LAUGHTER. Victor Borge got it right when he said, "Laughter is the shortest distance between two people." It"s also the most enjoyable. For relationships that can really go somewhere, just remember the word "TRAVEL." Then enjoy the trip! 6.The author intends to _________ by showing us the example in Paragraph One. A. condemn the wife for her silly behavior B. introduce new ways for closer relationships C. tell us King and his wife would never be separated D. encourage us to follow the wife’s technique 7.The underlined word “it” in Paragraph Four refers to? A. Trust. B. Glue. C. Closeness. D. TRAVEL 8.Which of the following agrees with what Jim Rohn says? A. Walls should be built to keep out the sadness. B. It’s unnecessary to avoid vulnerability for closer relationships. C. Love will be kept out if you let another too close. D. We shouldn’t let another too close because of vulnerability. 9.What does Victor Borge really mean by his word in the ninth paragraph? A. Laughter will keep the shortest distance. B. Laughter will make a closer relationship. C. No relationship will go without laughter. D. Laughter is necessary to make friends. 10.What would be the best title for this passage? A. Relationships. B. The story of a prisoner. C. A technique for good relationships. D. Tips on closer relationships. |

(任务型阅读) 阅读下面的短文,并根据短文后的要求答题(请注意问题后的字数要求)。 Safety in the highway is not totally out of hands. Here are four ways we can protect ourselves when we travel. You are safer in a large car. People in small cars are injured more often and more severely than people traveling in large cars. Factories of small cars are strengthening their products’ safety, which helps. But the mix of large cars and small cars on the road is the main reason of the problem. Being thrown into glass and metal car parts, or being thrown from the car, can really damage to you. That’s why safety belts should be worn. The safety belt’s main purpose is ___________if your car has a sudden crash with another vehicle or object, or if it rolls over. A belt can reduce the chance of fatal injury by 45% and the chance of serious injury by 50%. Air bags are important. More than half of all new cars sold have air bags. Air bags provide protection in frontal(正面的)crashes—the type of crash that kills the most drivers—when they are also wearing safety belts. Most people are demanding air bags in the cars they buy. But the protection provided by air bags is limited in side or rear crashes; effective as they are, they can’t take the place of safety belts. Drunk driving crashes are less likely to happen if you don’t drink. Drunk driving is the most serious problem. Many people have realized that drunk driving can lead to death and injury, prison time and other results. There are movements to strengthen penalties(处罚) for drinking and driving. 1. What is the main idea of the passage? (Please answer within 10 words.)
2. Which of the sentences in the passage can be replaced by the following one? Although they are effective, you should still wear your safety belts while driving.
3. Please fill in the blank with proper words to make the sentence completed.(Please answer within 6 words.)
4. Please translate the underlined sentence into Chinese.
6. What other suggestions can you offer? Why?(Please answer within 30 words.) |
You may say it’s just a slip of the tongue. But as a senior official and a well-educated person, a professional who is supposed to be expert at using words shouldn’t have made such a remark like “Why did only two teachers commit suicide?” We use “only” to emphasize(强调) how small an amount is or how unimportant the matter is. When talking about death toll, such a word as “only” should never be appropriate. Of course, it seems unfair to put all the blame on her, especially about the suicide of any individual. We should never indirectly encourage any self-destructive behaviour by making finger-pointing remarks afterwards. Any sensational accusation may help spread a very wrong message which will lead to even more copycat(模仿他人行为者)cases. As expected, Professor Li has spoken out in her defence, saying that her remarks concerning the two suicides had been taken out of context, adding that she is a caring and warm-hearted person. However, a seemingly “caring and warm-hearted person” without enough political sensitivity can hardly make a good government official. Mr. Tung used to be described as kind and selfless, but being kind is not enough. It is misleading to say such characteristics as kindness and devotion make somebody fit or capable. Last time, her saying that students were the least qualified to criticize the Chief Executive had led to much criticism. Then she apologized. This time, a much more widespread furore(公众的***动) has been brought. Again, she apologized. How many times is she going to apologize before she is willing to step down? We need a more diplomatic(外交的) person to calm teachers, students and parents alike. 1. The purpose of the passage is to _____. A. encourage teachers to commit suicide B. criticize professor Li C. put stress on the official’s remarks D. show her dissatisfaction with the senior official 2. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage? A. The official used improper words in her remarks. B. The senior official’s apologies were not sincere. C. Nobody could comfort the people. D. The professional tried to mislead the people to continue their suicide. 3. The author thought ________. A. the official was very fit for her office B. the official used the word “only” not by mistake C. it was quite right to blame the official D. the official won’t make such mistakes any more 4. From the passage we can infer that ______. A. the officials’ remark led to more suicide committing B. the official was a sensitive politician C. the official believed the students had rights to talk about the Chief Executive D. professor Li showed favor to the official |
People say time is relative. But relative to what.I do know that sometimes time“seems”to be moving slower.Remember Christmas Eve when you were a child? It was the longest night of the year.It lasted forever! And now it seems like I just paid my bill yesterday...and it’s due again! People tell me all too frequently…I need more time! Oh ,really?…Mother Teresa,Michelangelo, and Helen Keller all had 24 hours a day.Look what they did with their time! Is it that we need to manage our time better…or our priorities(重点)?You’ve heard the expression“first things first.”The first step in understanding the power of time is to understand that it is limited. Why is it then that some people get a lot more done? We know the answer. They use their time smartly. One day an expert on time management was speaking to a group of students and announced a quiz.He pulled out a wide-mouthed jar.Next,he placed about a dozen fist-sized rocks, one at a time , into the jat, until no more would fit.“Is it full?” he asked.”Yes,”responds the class.”Oh really?” he asked. So he took out a bucket of gravel(砂砾), which he managed to work down into the spaces between the larger rocks.“Is it full now?” he asked. Wising up,one answered,‘"Probably not.”Sure enough, he took out a bucket of sand, which he poured into the empty spaces.”Is it full now?” he asked.”No,” reply the students confidently. So he took a glass of water and filled it in.Then he asked,“What is my point?’’ One said,‘"No matter how full your schedule is,if you try really hard, you can always fit some more things into it!” “No,”the speaker replied,“It tells us if you don’t put the big rocks in first, you’ll never get them in at all.’’ What are the big rocks? The things you should put in to your jar first. The rich don’t get 25 hours and the poor don’t get 23…we all get the same.Let’s use them wisely! Invest your time wisely! 49.What does the point of the quiz lie in_______. A.How to put more things into ajar. B.How well the students learn the lesson. C.How to get more done in limited time D.The skill and order is very important. 50. “The big rocks”in this passage refers to_______? A.difficult points. B.advantages C.minor things D.focuses 51. How is the passage mainly developed? A.By inferring. B.By comparing. C.By listing examples. D.By giving facts. 52. The text is written mainly A.to explain the origin of the expression “first things first” B.to call on us to use our time in a smart manner C.to introduce a meaningful class given by an expert D.to tell us about the relativity and the power of time |
