Choose friends who make you feel happy! Not long ago, I opened an e-mail from Jennifer, a lady I knew through business in Guelph, Ontario, Canada, "I have been seeing how I feel after interacting with different people and thinking who I feel good about, 1 " Then she invited me and eleven other women to a "Movie Night" to be held every six weeks at her house. She promised we were sure to enjoy a good time. 2 She made it clear in her invitation that there was no pressure to show up to all or any movie nights. Wonderful! 3 I gratefully accepted her kind invitation. 4 Although all the women were eager to participate, some said they didn"t see themselves as optimistic people. "I told them they didn"t have to be cheerful around me all the time. I invited them because they made me feel happy," she says. 5 In a US study, researchers measured the happiness of 4739 people at regular interval over 20 years. The study found that a person"s happiness depends on the happiness of people they connect with. Amazingly it also found that a person"s happiness spreads not only between direct friends, but also among friends of your friends" friends! A. She is one of my good friends. B. Research shows such gatherings make sense. C. Later she had some puzzled reactions to her invitation. D. And you are on my list. E. We would chat, eat and watch feel-good movies. F. I e-mailed her back immediately. G. She was not satisfied with the women. |

John Steinbeck once said,"All Americans believe they are born fishermen. For a man to admit to a distaste in fishing would be like denouncing(公开谴责)mother-love or hating moonlight." I can"t say that I"m the biggest John Steinbeck fan.Actually, the only thing I can remember reading by him was "The Pearl" when I was in middle school, but I couldn"t agree more with the man when it comes to fishing.Whether I am on a boat in the middle of Lay Lake, fishing off the shores of the Florida Keys for tarpon(大海鲢)or catching rainbow trout(虹鳟鱼)in the Shoshone River of Wyoming, fishing is my life. According to the American Sportsfishing Asso ciation, the fishing industry brings in more than $116 billion per year from fishermen across the country. Though a beautiful picture to imagine, fishing is much more than that.Fi shing is a way of life for many people and a way to escape everyday stress.Being a fisherman makes me a member of a wonderful group of people extending to all walks of life.Even President Bush can be found fishing on his farm in Texas with his good friend Roland Martin when the job gets too stressful. I can remember fishing with my grandfather when I was 5 years old on his boat at Lake Mitchell.Although I didn"t understand what I was doing,I did know that my grandfather was happy and that made me happy.Since then I have spent the past 16 years on the rivers and lakes of Alabama. After years of practice, before and after work,I slowly developed an understanding of fishing. My boss,Ric Horst, took me back to the Shoshone, and I managed to bring in a 19-inch cutthroat trout.Fishing with Ric was a life-changing experience for me.He not only showed me how to fish correctly, but also told me how fishing could be a way to escape your problems. Since then,prime-time(黄金时间)season seems to take forever to arrive. Now,with the ending of February and beginning of March in sight, the excitement of heading out to Lake Tuscaloosa or Lake Lurleen before classes and catching something has finally returned. |

Happier people are generally healthier people-not only mentally, but also physically. So everyone tries to pursue happiness. What"s the pursuit of happiness? It means practicing happiness regularly, making it a habit, and reprogramming our brains by creating new emotional pathways. Psychologists" studies have suggested that several factors contribute to our happiness. It"s shown that only 10% of our ability for happiness depends upon external(外在的) circumstances! 50% of our happiness level is dependant on genetic genes and 50% is learned. Of the 50% learned, only 10% is determined by our circumstances. The other 40% is determined by our habitual thoughts, feeling, words, and actions. That 40% is what we have power to change! So how can we learn to be happy? It takes practice, practice, practice. Here are three ways to get started. Power of positive thinking: Our negative selftalk is so powerful; it overwhelms (覆没)all other input. It therefore takes numerous positive experiences to overcome a single negative one. For each negative thought, state three positive qualities that you possess and start creating a new positive thought. Open your heart and share the best of you with others: Happy people are more giving, outgoing, flexible and creative. Does serving others make you happy or does being happy better enable you to be of service? What difference does it make? Just reach out and start giving! Honor yourself: Be gentle and forgiving toward yourself. You need to unconditionally love and approve of your innermost(内心的)being, which is the keystone that supports all gateways toward personal growth, fulfillment, and happiness. True happiness isn"t a short pleasure but a sense of wholeness and fulfillment. Happiness is our right as human beings and to pursue happiness is our duty.

From preschool forward, most teachers strongly urge parents to have their children read-or be read to-on a reading schedule throughout the year. This includes summer months, holiday breaks, or any time when school is out. The key is to always make reading fun and a time to look forward to. Then what are things parents should keep in mind to create fun reading? Take advantage of weather. Be adventurous and make it a game as to where you should read to your child and what. In warm weather, read next to a pond or lake, under a tree, or even in the tree house. One mother reads to her young child in their children"s pool in the backyard during the summer months. Another mom finishes the longedfor daily trip to the park in the spring or fall by reading a book before they leave. Cold months can mix reading activities by having books about snowmen, snowfalls, winter holidays, or sports such as ice skating. Build a reading activity into life"s planning. Children of all ages should learn the connection between reading and knowledge. If your family is adding a flower bed, have children read about how to prepare a bed, what kinds of flowers are suitable for the area of the country and when they should be planted. Getting a new family pet? Read up on varieties of dogs, care required, and even stories about children and their pets. Traveling somewhere? You guessed it, read all about your destination first and you and your children will have the added benefit of knowing more about the area when you arrive. Create a book discussion. Some fun ways for kids are to have book discussions, which can be done with family members by flashlight in the backyard, during a summer outing, or even over breakfast. Be creative! Parents may ask the child some questions, such as: Did you like the book? Why or why not? Who was your favorite character? Did you like how it ended? Parents can also create a book club with kids in the neighborhood, where they can have a book discussion. A simple discussion may last as short as 20 minutes, or longer as appropriate. The book club may have each child tell about a particular book they read each week. Taking turns with sharing books can bring a lot of fun!
