It doesn"t come as a surprise to you to realize that it makes no difference what you read or study if you can"t remember it. You just waste your valuable time. 1 One dependable aid that does help you remember what you study is to have a specific purpose or reason for reading. Why does a clerk in a store go away when your reply to her offer to help is, "No, thank you. I"m just looking."? Both you and she know that if you aren"t sure what you want, you are not likely to find it. But suppose you say instead, "Yes, thank you.I want a pair of sun glasses." She says,"Right this way, please." 2 If you choose a book, "just looking" for nothing in particular, you are likely to get just that-nothing. But if you do know what you want, you are almost sure to get it.Your reasons will vary; they will include reading or studying"to find out more about", "to understand the reasons for" and"to find out how". 3 Before you start to study, you say to yourself something like this, "I want to know why Stephen Vincent Benet happened to write about America". Because you know why you are reading or studying, you relate the information to your purpose and remember it better. 4 At least two important processes go on at the same time. As you read, you take in ideas rapidly and accurately. But at the same time you express your own ideas to yourself as you react to what you read. You have a kind of mental conversation with the author. This additional process of thinking about what you read includes evaluating it, relating it to what you already know, and using it for your own purposes. 5 One part of critical reading, as you have discovered, is distinguishing between facts and opinions. Facts can be checked by evidence, Opinions are one"s own personal reactions.Another part of critical reading is judging sources.Still another part is drawing accurate inferences. |
A. Maybe you have already discovered some clever ways to keep yourself from forgetting. B. It is important for students to have a positive attitude to their study. C. You remember better when you know what you" re reading. D. In other words, a good reader is a critical reader. E. It"s quite the same with your studying. F. Reading is not one single activity. G.This is the way it works. |

It is Saturday afternoon. You and your friends are planning to go to the movies and then spend the night together. Just as you start to get ready, your dad reminds you it is your aunt"s birthday and the whole family is going out to dinner to celebrate. How can this possibly end without a huge argument? One of the greatest sources of tension (紧张情绪) between teenagers and their families is the struggle to balance personal desires with family expectations. As you are getting older, you are becoming more independent and more interested in being with your friends. However, at the same time, your family is trying to figure out how to deal with these changes. While you once spent most of your free time with your family, you are now often absent from home. Parents may get their feelings hurt. Or they might feel that they are losing control of their family during this period. You might feel angry that so many family demands are placed on you. There are a few things you can try to make it a little easier to ease the tension. * Make your plans in advance. Ask your parents if there is anything else planned at that time. * When something with your friends interferes (干扰;冲突) with a family event, try to figure out if there is any way you can do both. * Suggest something you would really like to do with your family.Sometimes parents feel better just knowing their teenager wants to spend time with them. Some of the time you won"t be happy with the outcome. You might either have to disappoint your parents or have to miss out being with your friends. However,if you show consideration for the feelings of both your family and your friends, you can solve the problem in a tender way. |

Plants are very important living things. Life could not go if there were no plants. This is because plants can make food from air, water and sunlight. Animals and man cannot make food from air, water and sunlight. Animals get their food by eating plants and other animals. So animals and man need plants in order to live. This is why we find that there are so many plants around us. If you look carefully at the plants around you, you will find that there are two kinds of plants: flowering plants and non-flowering plants. Flowering plants can make seeds. The seeds are protected by the fruits. Some fruits have one seed, some have two, three or four, and some have many seeds. But a few fruits have no seeds at all. An example of a fruit without seeds is the banana fruit. Most non-flowering plants don"t grow from seeds. They grow from spores. Spores are so small and light that they can float in the air. We may say that spores are quite the same as the seeds. When these spores fall on wet and shady places, they usually grow into new plants. |

There are several ways you can find out about the countries and places you wish to visit. You can talk to friends who have travelled to the places. Or you can go and see a color film. Or you can read travel books. It would seem that there are three kinds of travel books. The first are those that give a personal, subjective (主观的) account of travels which the author has actually made himself. If they are informative and have a good index (索引), then they can be useful to you when you are planning your travels. The second kind are those books whose purpose is to give a purely objective (客观的) description of things to be done and seen. If a well-read, cultured person has written such a book, then it is even more useful. It can be sorted as a selected guide book. The third kind are those books which are called"a guide" to some place or other. If they are good, they will, in addition to their factual information, give an analysis or an explanation. Like the first kind they can be inspiring and interesting. But their basic purpose is to help the reader who wishes to plan in the most practical way. Whatever kind of travel book you choose you must make sure that it does not describe everything as "wonderful", "excellent" or"magical". You must also note its date of publication because travel is a very practical affair and many things change quickly in the twenty-first century. Finally, you should make sure that the contents are well presented and easy to find. |

I started to study English by myself when I was about 15 because of Michael Jackson. He"s been my idol since1991, and I really wanted to understand him and his music. 1 I was very patient, and that helped me a lot in the process of learning English by myself. Actually, I can"t describe the techniques I used to learn it, because it was almost automatic for me to start understanding English after a period of hard work trying to translate texts, dialogues and songs. 2 One thing that I can say is that I started learning English through comparing patterns and observing the language structure, comparing it to Portuguese and trying to memorize rules. 3 Another thing that helped me a lot is the fact that I would spend hours studying the uses, tenses, etc. of the words I could notice. 4 It was the hardest part of the process for me, because the only source I had was music, although I used a pronunciation dictionary, too. 5 Later on I entered UFMG and really started studying English. Today I"m a teacher at an English Course, and I really enjoy it, because I can improve my English each day. |
A. Despite the difficulty, I could learn everything well. B. So I really can"t say exactly how I"ve achieved proficiency (熟练). C. With the help of my teacher, I learned pronunciation well. D. So I can say that a strong will is the key to my success. E. After having a large vocabulary, I started working on pronunciation. F. And I used to make lists of words in order to memorize them and their meanings. G. I used to use a dictionary to find the meaning of each word in songs written by him. |
