Ten years ago I used to be very fit. I rode a bike to work and I got a lot of exercise at weekends. I used to play tennis a lot and go for long walks. In those days I didn’t earn very much. I had a job in an office. It wasn’t a very good job but I had a lot of time to do the things I enjoyed doing. Then, about eight years ago, I got a much better job. The pay was better, but the hours were a lot longer. I bought a car and drove to work every day. I began to take people out to lunch. And I began to put on weight, too. I stopped playing tennis and going for long walks at weekends because I just didn’t have any time for things like that any more. There’s a lot of stress in my job. Perhaps that’s why I started drinking more than I used to. For example, I used to have only half a glass of whisky when I got home, but then I started filling my glass to the top, and instead of having one glass, I would have several. I started smoking a lot, too. I never used to smoke at all. Two months ago I had a heart attack. At first I just couldn’t believe it. Luckily it wasn’t very serious. The doctor advised me to stop smoking and to eat less. He also advised me to work less and get more exercise. But I just haven’t any time! My job takes everything out of me! Sometimes I wonder if I should get another job. Perhaps I could do something as I used to. But if I do that, I won’t earn as much. I have a family to support. I have to think of them, too. I just don’t know what I should do. What do you think? 小题1:Compared with ten years ago, what is worse for the author now?A.His job. | B.His pay. | C.His means of transport. | D.His health. | 小题2:According to the passage, when the author got the better job, which of the following is NOT true?A.He got higher pay. | B.His working hours weren’t long. | C.He found it very stressful. | D.He had little free time at weekends. | 小题3:After the author had a heart attack, the doctor advised him ____________.A.not to work any longer | B.to take a long vacation abroad | C.to stop smoking and take exercise | D.not to eat out any more | 小题4:What can we learn about the author?A.The author is not sure what he should do now. | B.The author has taken the doctor’s advice already. | C.The author has got another new job. | D.The author feels much better now. |

A friend of mine was in low spirits one day. He usually dealt with this state of mind by avoiding people until the mood passed. But on that day Fred had an important meeting with his boss, so he decided to put on a false front. During the meeting Fred smiled, joked and played the part of a happy, good-natured person. To his surprise, he soon discovered he was no longer depressed. Without realizing it, Fred chanced to find an important new principle of psychological research: acting a part can help us feel the way we want to feel — more self-assured in a trying situation, more cheerful when things go wrong. How can you put this principle to work in your own life? There’s more involved than simply mimicking a few expressions. You have to be systematic about it. Here’s how: Smile to cheer yourself up. Relax to reduce anxiety or fear. Look your best to increase your self-confidence. Keep cool in a crisis. Using our bodies and actions to change the way we feel can be a useful tool in helping us through life’s difficult times. As novelist George Eliot wrote more than a century ago, “Our deeds determine us, as much as we determine our deeds.” People who remember that — and act upon it — can only be richer and happier for the experience. 小题1:In paragraph 1 the underlined phrase “to put on a false front” means ______.A.to wear a wrong coat | B.to act a part unsuccessfully | C.to show a pretended happy appearance | D.to put on airs | 小题2:According to Paragraph 1, Fred ______before the meeting.A.had very few spirits | B.had many spirits | C.was in bad mood | D.was in good mood | 小题3:The underlined phrase “mimicking” in Paragraph 3 most probably means ______.A.learning quickly | B.making faces | C.behaving well | D.imitating others | 小题4:In the last paragraph, the quotation “Our deeds determine us, as much as we determine our deeds” may show that ______.A.actions speak louder than words | B.the more we do, the happier we are | C.our feeling cannot change our behavior | D.actions are very important for us to beat bad moods for good |

Weighed down by study? Pushed to the limit by the fast pace of life ? Frightened by the possible war ? Well, you’re not alone. Men and women in France are seeking relief using the world’s best medicine-----laughter. In the past year, more than 15 laughter clubs have been set up across the country. People of all ages go to release their stress with an hour group laughs. “People telephoned me and said they have forgotten what it is to laugh. They want to find a place where they can escape all their problems for a while. So they come,” said 40—year—old Jocelyne Le Moan. She usually takes a class of around 60 people through a series of laughter techniques. Her pupils range from teenagers to 70 years old, but most are middle---aged white collars seeking 60 minutes of relaxation at the end of a busy day. Le Moan takes them through the “Lion Laugh”and the “Laugh Contest”, where participants “speak”to each other in different ways. And instead of talking, they break into fits of laughter. At the end there are 15 minutes of “meditation”, when they lie on their backs and let the laughs burst out of their mouths. “I love it. It’s an experience that has changed my life. Through it I rediscovered the child’s laugh inside me,”Said Romain Jouffroy, 24. “US President George W. Bush should give it a try. He has lost his laugh,”she joked . Like Jouffroy, many laughter club members find themselves changed into children again, and why not ? The average preschooler laughs up to 400 times a day. The average adult only a day seven to 15. The physical benefits of laughter are already well—recognized. Doctors say the act of laughing releases good chemicals into the blood—stream, while the quick breathing that accompanies it helps massage(按摩)the digestive organs and strengthens the heart. “A full hour is like having your inside go jogging! One finishes out of breath, but feels revitalized(产生新活力. And on top of that , you’ve had a laugh,”said doctor Alexisd’ Estaing. And many participants in Paris also emphasize the psychological benefits. Bad teeth can be painful -- and worse. They can even be deadly. Infections (感染) of the gums (牙龈) and the teeth can cause bacteria (细菌) to go into the blood system. Those bacteria can increase the chance of a heart attack and worsen the effects of other diseases. And adults are not the only ones at risk. For example, in 2007, doctors in the Washington area said a boy died when a tooth infection spread to his brain. They said it might have been prevented had he received the dental care (牙齿保健) he needed. He was twelve years old. Experts at the National Institutes of Health say good dental care starts at birth. Breast milk, they say, is the best food for the healthy development of teeth. Breast milk can help slow the growth of bacteria and acid production in the mouth. But dentists say a baby"s gums and early teeth should be cleaned after each feeding. Use a cloth with a little warm water. Do the same if a baby is fed with a bottle. Experts say if you decide to put your baby to sleep with a bottle, only give the child water. When baby teeth begin to appear, you can clean them with a wet toothbrush. Dentists say it is important to find soft toothbrushes made especially for babies and to use them very gently. The use of fluoride (氟化物) to protect teeth is common in many parts of the world. For example, it is often added to drinking water supplies. The fluoride mixes with enamel (珐琅质) , the hard surface on teeth, to help prevent holes from forming. 小题1:Which of the following can be used as the title of the passage?A.Concerns for Healthy Teeth of the Young | B.Causes of Teeth Problem | C.Importance of Healthy Teeth of All | D.Solutions to Teeth Problem | 小题2:What"s the main idea of paragraph 4 and 5?A.How to develop babies" teeth. | B.How to keep babies" teeth clean | C.Why to protect babies" teeth | D.Why to keep babies" teeth clean | 小题3:The passage indicates that ______.A.Enamel is most widely used to protect teeth in the world | B.Breast milk can cure babies" bad teeth | C.Bad teeth may affect the health of adults and the young | D.Babies" teeth should be brushed once per day | 小题4:The writer uses the boy"s death as an example to show that ______.A.not only adults but the young may suffer from teeth problem | B.the doctors should be responsible for the case | C.babies with bad teeth can easily die | D.the boy was not fed with his breast milk |

The World Health Organization recently reported that the number of cases of tuberculosis(TB) has been abating since 2006 . Also, fewer people are dying from TB. But a study by researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, says smoking could threaten this progress. Nearly twenty percent of all people use tobacco, and millions of non-smokers get sick from breathing the smoke. The new study predicts that smoking will produce an additional thirty-four million TB deaths by 2024. Efforts to control the spread of TB have mainly focused on finding and treating infections. Fewer efforts have been made to understand the causes. Dr Anthony Fauci is the director of the United States National Institute of Allergy and Infectious diseases. He said, “Despite our control efforts, we still have more than a million people each year dying from TB and millions of people getting infected; we realize it’s still a very important problem. So we have to do the practical thing and we have to do the fundamental research things at the same time. ” Smoking does not cause TB; bacteria cause the infection. But the study says smoking affects the nervous system in a way that makes an inactive case of TB more likely to develop into an active one. Stanton Glantz is the director of the University of California’s Centre for Tobacco Control Research and Education and an author of the new study. He says it shows that TB cannot be controlled unless tobacco use is controlled. He said, “It increases the number of people who will get TB by about seven percent.” The study is described as the first to identify a direct link between tobacco use and rates of TB infection and death. Professor Glantz says the results should guide those creating health policies and TB control efforts. He said, “If you want to control the infectious disease of TB, you have to control the tobacco industry and the tobacco industry’s efforts to increase tobacco use, particularly in developing countries where TB is a big problem.” 小题1:What would be the beat title for this passage? A.Scientists try to find the causes of TB deaths. | B.Study shows smoking is harmful to our health. | C.Study links smoking to millions of TB deaths. | D.Scientists pay more attention to TB deaths than before. | 小题2:What does the underlined word “abating” in Paragraph 1 mean?A.Responding | B.Surviving. | C.Rising. | D.Falling. | 小题3: What would Dr Anthony Fauci probably agree with?A.More efforts are needed to find the causes of TB infections. | B.TB infections are no longer a serious problem. | C.Few efforts have been put into the work of treating TB infections. | D.The practical and the fundamental research cannot be done together at present. | 小题4:It is implied in the passage that ____________.A.it is not very hard to control TB | B.smoking indirectly leads to TB | C.an inactive case of TB is deadly | D.people cannot blame smoking for TB |

Hearing plays an important part in our everyday life, but few of us take the steps we need to protect our hearing. It is easy to see how your hearing is under assault in today’s world. There are so many things to hear, and so many new instruments, like iPods and headphones, which can harm your hearing if used improperly. Keeping the volume(音量)to a reasonable level on an iPod or other portable listening instruments is one of the most important ways to protect your hearing. Another great way to keep your hearing protected is to avoid loud noises whenever possible. There are many loud noises from power tools to machinery, and it is important to avoid these noises as often as possible. When it is not possible to avoid them, keep your hearing protected by using earplugs(耳机). If you think your hearing may have already been damaged by modern technology, it is important to have your hearing tested by a physician. Only such a professional will be able to measure your level of hearing loss and help you find the best solution to your hearing problem. For those with hearing issues, the choices have never been greater. There are many excellent hearing aids on the market. Having a hearing aid can be a perfect choice for the young and the old alike, and many people who swore they would never wear a hearing aid find that they love the convenience and quality these instruments represent. Never let an unimportant thing like vanity(虚荣) get in the way of treating a hearing problem. These days there are hearing aids that are nearly invisible to the naked eye, including a number of models that fit completely inside the ear. If you believe you may be experiencing a problem with your hearing, it is important to have it checked out, and to take the right measures to protect your ears. In many cases, this treatment will be as simple as wearing earplugs. Taking care of your ears is of great importance. After all, you only get one set of ears. 小题1:The second paragraph mainly talks about_____.A.the causes of hearing loss | B.the importance of hearing | C.how to cure hearing problems | D.how to protect your hearing | 小题2:The underlined phrase “under assault” in Paragraph 2 most probably means_____.A.under consideration | B.under protection | C.under attack | D.under treatment | 小题3:All the following factors may cause hearing problems EXCEPT_____.A.using iPods improperly | B.listening to MP3 at full volume | C.standing near machinery making a loud noise | D.using earplugs when there are loud noises |
