阅读理解。     No one likes germs. You wash your hands often and avoid sick people. But some of the germiest places
are in your own home where you can"t avoid them!
Over 77, 500 bacteria per square centimeter can live in your kitchen sink drain. More bacteria live in and
around the sink itself. To get rid of them, clean the entire sink area with a disinfectant.
Those wet clothes from your washer are not all that clean, especially if they include underwear. Use hot
water and bleach to wash underwear as it contains E.coli (大肠秆菌). Put wet laundry in the dryer quickly
so the bacteria do not multiply.
The germs you wash off your body stay in the tub-about 15.500 bacteria per square centimeter! Use a
disinfectant to clean your tub weekly. And dry the tub with a clean towel so more germs won"t grow on the
wet surface.
You"ll find plenty of germs outside your home too.
Lots of germs live on the buttons of your local ATM. According to www.health.corn, Chinese researchers
tested 38 ATMs in downtown Taipei. They found that each button hosted an average of 1,200 germs. Use a
hand sanitizer after using the ATM and after handling paper money too.
The bottoms of women"s purses house tens of thousands if not millions of bacteria. University of Arizona
researchers discovered all kinds of different bacteria on purse bottoms. These included E.coli as well as
bacteria that cause eye and skin infections. Women should wipe their purses every few days with a mild soap
solution.
All kinds of germs live on shopping cart shopping cart handles. Lots of people touch the handles each day-
and who knows where their hands have been! Carry disinfectant wipes and use them on the handles. That will
kill nearly all germs. 1. How many germy places are mentioned in this passage? A. two
B. four
C. six
D. eight 2. What does the underlined word disinfectant mean in the second paragraph? A. a kind of germ
B. a tablecloth
C. a kind of cleaning tool
D. a kind of chemical liquid which can kill germs 3. Which of the following statement is NOT true according to the passage? A. Some of the germiest places are outside your home.
B. Use a disinfectant to clean your bathtub weekly.
C. Use a hand sanitizer after using an ATM or handling paper money.
D. Thousands of not millions of bacteria live on the bottoms of women"s purses.

lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of strokes. Researchers suggest that these benefits of eating fish far
outweigh the risks of getting sick from contaminated fish.
Ongoing studies find that omega-3 fatty acids work magic on the brain too. Pregnant? Go out and eat fish!
One study tracked a group of expectant women who ate more than 340 grams of fish per week. It turns out
they gave birth to children who, years later, scored really high on IQ tests.
How can you add fish to your diet? One way to begin is by replacing meat with fish in one meal a week.
Instead of frying, which retains more fat, try boiling your fish in an oven or grilling it outdoors. And don"t be
afraid to spice up your fish. Garlic, herbs other spices can add wonderful flavors to fish.
For lighter meals, keep a few cans of tuna or other fish on hand at all times. They"re great for making tasty
sandwiches or fish burgers. If you get hungry in the middle of the morning or afternoon, try tuna on crackers.
It"s hard to find a better snack. And parents, be sure to introduce fish to your children. It"s important for them
to get used to eating it at a young age. 1. What does the writer discuss in this passage?A. Chemicals in popular drinks

greenhouse gases they send out, which is thought to be responsible for global warming.
Thanks to special bacteria in the stomachs, kangaroo flatulence (肠胃气胀) contains no methane (甲
烷) and scientists want to transfer that bacteria to cattle and sheep which produce large quantities of the
harmful gas.
While the usual image of greenhouse gas pollution is a huge smokestack pushing out carbon dioxide,
farm animals" passing wind contributes to a surprisingly high percentage of total emission (排放物) in
some countries.
"Fourteen percent of emissions from all sources in Australia is from methane from cattle and sheep,"
said Athol Klieve, a senior research scientist with the Queensland state government.
"And if you look at another country such as New Zealand, which has got a much higher agricultural
base, they are actually up around 50 percent," he said.
Researchers say the bacteria also make the digestive process much more efficient and could potentially
save millions of dollars in feed costs for farmers.
But it will take researchers at least three years to isolate the bacteria before they can even start to
develop a way of transferring it to cattle and sheep.
Another group of scientists, meanwhile, has suggested Australians should farm fewer cattle and sheep
and just eat more kangaroos. And about twenty percent of health-conscious Australians are believed to eat
the national symbol already.
"It"s low in fat, it"s got high protein levels and it"s very clean in the sense that basically it"s the free-range
(放养的) animal," said Peter Ampt of the University of New South Wales"s institute of environmental studies. 1. The passage mainly talks about _____. A. a better way to prevent air pollution
B. the danger of methane from farm animals
C. possible solutions to protecting environment
D. a recent research on global warming 2. Scientists intend to put the bacteria into cattle and sheep in order to _____. A. prevent them from sending out harmful gases
B. promote Australian farming
C. protect Australian ecosystem
D. make the most of the special bacteria 3. Another possible solution to the problem is _____. A. to reduce the number of animals raised on farms
B. to keep more kangaroos rather than sheep and cattle
C. to eat more plants rather than beef and mutton
D. to grow more trees to absorb carbon dioxide 4. From the passage we learn that _____. A. it is easy to transfer the bacteria to cattle and sheep
B. farm animals are to blame for global warming in some countries
C. cattle and sheep produce more methane than kangaroos
D. one fifth of Australians already eat their national symbol

they went to their favorite fast food place. Emily got her food first. When Madison sat down next to her,
Emily couldn"t believe her eyes. Madison had two hamburgers, three containers of French fries, an apple
pie, a soda, and a shake on her tray.
"Why do you have so much food?" Emily asked. "I"m so tired of being really skinny (极瘦的)," Madison
said,"so I"ve decided to eat lots of food and try to gain weight."
Trying to gain weight by stuffing (塞, 填) yourself with extra calories like Madison did is a bad idea. It
can make you sick if you"re naturally short or thin- so just listen to your appetite (胃口) and eat only as
much as your body tells you to. Once in a while, a health problem can keep a kid from gaining weight. The
kid usually goes to a specialist who can check things out, or to a registered dietitian (饮食学家) who has
lots of tips on how to eat well. But most of the time, thin kids don"t need to see a doctor or go on a special
diet.
Here"s another surprise. Kids who are thin need to exercise. A lot of people use exercise to keep their
weight under control or to lose weight. But exercise serves many other purposes, too. Moving around helps
you develop important skills and helps your body get stronger. And unless a kid has gone through puberty
(青春期), weight-lifting won"t build bigger muscles. It also could hurt bones, joints, and muscles.
You want to help your body, not hurt it. Treat it right and you"ll grow and develop just the way you
should. 1. The opening part of this passage about Emily and Madison is used to _____. A. tell us that Emily was not pleased with Madison
B. introduce the topic of gaining weight
C. suggest that Emily and Madison often went to their field trip
D. tell us that Emily and Madison were close friends 2. If you are short and thin as you should you"d better _____. A. eat as much as you want to every day
B. see a doctor as soon as possible
C. force yourself to eat more every day
D. eat as much as you can to gain weight 3. Which one of the following is TRUE according to this passage? A. Only fat people need to exercise to lose weight.
B. Madison should have much food because she was thin.
C. Thin people also need to exercise.
D. You must be ill if you are too thin or too short. 4. What would be the best title for the passage?A. The thinner You Are the More You Should Eat.
B. Emily and Madison - Two Close Friends.
C. The Thinner You Are the Better You Will Be.
D. What Should You Do if You Are Thin?

and/or heavy automobile traffic. Today, we know that although these are the areas with the worst air pollution,
the problem is actually worldwide. On several occasions over the past decade, a heavy cloud of air pollution
has covered the entire eastern half of the United States and led to health warnings even in rural areas away from
any major concentration of manufacturing and automobile traffic. In fact, the very climate of the entire earth
may be affected by air pollution. Some scientists feel that the increasing concentration of carbon dioxide in the
air resulting from the burning of fossil fuels (coal and oil) is creating a "greenhouse effect"-holding in heat
reflected from the earth and raising the world"s average temperature. If this view is correct and the world"s
temperature is raised only a few degrees, much of the polar ice cap will melt and cities such as New York,
Boston, Miami, and New Orleans will be under water.
Another view, less widely held, is that increasing particulate (废气排往空中而形成的微粒、颗粒) matter
in the atmosphere is blocking sunlight and lowering the earth"s temperature-a result that would be equally
disastrous. A drop of just a few degrees could create something close to new ice age and would make
agriculture difficult or impossible in many of our top farming areas. At present we do not know for sure that
either of these conditions will happen (though one recent government report prepared by experts in the field
concluded that the greenhouse effect is very likely). Perhaps, if we are very lucky, the two tendencies will
offset each other and the world"s temperature will stay about the same as it is now. 1. As pointed out at the beginning of the passage, people used to think that air pollution _____. A. caused widespread damage in the countryside
B. affected the entire eastern half of the United States
C. had damaging effects on health
D. existed merely in urban and industrial areas 2. As far as the greenhouse effect is concerned, the author _____. A. shares the same view with the scientists
B. is uncertain of its occurrence
C. rejects it as being ungrounded
D. thinks that it will destroy the world soon 3. The underlined word "offset" in Para. 2 could best be replaced by _____. A. slip into
B. make up for
C. set up
D. catch up with 4. This passage is mainly concerned with _____. A. the greenhouse effect
B. the burning of fossil fuels
C. the potential effect of air pollution
D. the likelihood (可能性) of a new ice age

I think the government should pass a 1aw to stop people from letting their cats run free. There are three
important reasons why you should do it:
When cats run free, they hide themselves under bird feeders (喂食器) and kill defenseless (毫无防备的)
songbirds. Every time I put up a bird feeder, I find at least one dead bird in my yard. I"m sure all those birds
were killed by cats. And cats don"t even eat the birds they kill. Songbirds belong in our parks and gardens, but
cats don"t. Dogs never kill poor little birds. I don"t know why people don"t want a dog in the first place.
Cats are always using my garden as a litter-box. This is very dirty and makes me feel sick. Children can"t
play in the garden when cats have been there. Dogs are usually tied to trees, so they don"t cause such trouble.
Cats spread diseases when they use a garden as a litter-box, so I think this should be stopped.
Finally, letting cats run free is not even good for the cats. Sure, most cats want to go outside. Their
owners like to give them everything they want, just like spoiled children. But cats that stay indoors live much
longer than cats that run free. Cats are always getting hit by cars when they"re allowed to run free.
I"m sure that if you think about all the things I"ve said, you will work to pass a law stopping cats from
running free. This will improve our environment, make our parks and gardens cleaner, and even help the cats
themselves by making them live.
Thank you for your attention to my suggestion.
                                                                                                                                                  Sincerely,
Eve Harringford 1. According to the author, a law should be passed _______. A. to make people keep their cats indoors

D. to protect defenseless songbirds2. Of the following statements, which does NOT support the author"s opinions? A. Cats kill defenseless songbirds.
B. Cats usually hide themselves in litter-boxes.
C. Cats spoil the environment.
D. Cats face more dangers when they run free. 3. From the passage, we can learn that _______.

A. cats should never be allowed to run outside
B. it is against the law to let cats run free
C. the author has a good opinion of dogs
D. Weiner is all for stopping cats running free
