During the last fifteen years of my mother"s life she suffered with Alzheimer"s

During the last fifteen years of my mother"s life she suffered with Alzheimer"s disease (老年痴呆). Until then she had been a bright, cheerful woman deeply interested and involved in the world around her. I would go home to visit her in Virginia and she would look at me in a puzzled way and ask, “Who are you?” I would answer, “I"m your son.” “Where do you live?” She would ask. “In California”, I would tell her. “Isn"t that interesting,” she would say, “I have a son in California.” She seemed simply forgetful and confused at the beginning of the disease, but later on she would go through periods of intense anxiety. She would pace through the house she had lived in most of her life crying uneasily that she wanted to go home. Or she would leave home and wander away if she were unattended for a short time. Hoping to please her and put her mind at ease I would take her for a drive, visiting sites where she had lived as a child. In the yard of the hillside house in Shipman I sat in the car and admired the view of the old oaks and long green lawn. I pictured my mother there was a little girl playing with the pet lamb she had been so fond of. I looked to her for some response. She shook her head and said, “I want to go home.” Over the years I have decided that what my mother was calling home was not a place, but a time. I suspect it was a time when she was much younger, when her children were still underfoot, when her husband was still vigorous and attentive. Watching my mother"s suffering set me wondering where I would have gone in mind if someday I couldn’t find home and wanted to go there. In this family we tend to be long-lived and we grow fuzzy (糊涂的) minded as the years go by. At eighty I have already noticed some alarming symptoms. My doctor says the forgetfulness is only natural and that it comes with age. Still the fear of Alzheimer"s is haunting there. Someday if and when I become even more cloudy minded than I am now, unable to drive and unable to tell you where "home" is, my dear son, I expect I will ask you to take me home, I know you will do your best to find the place I need to be. I leave these notes for your guidance. 小题1:What"s the main idea of the first two paragraphs?A.The author’s mother suffered with serious Alzheimer"s disease. | B.The author’s mother forgot who’s his son. | C.The author didn’t know how to cure his mother. | D.The author’s mother couldn’t find her home. | 小题2:What is not the symptom of the author’s mother ? Have you ever made contact with the creative spirit, that certain something hard to describe, but full of good—and sometimes great—ideas? It is more than an occasional great thought. When we feel the moving of the creative spirit, it brings to life a style of being: a lifetime filled with the desire to invent, to explore new ways of doing things, and to turn dreams into reality. That flash of inspiration is the final moment of a process marked by unique stages—the basic steps in creative problem-solving. The first stage is preparation, when you look for any information that might be important. It"s when you let your imagination run free. But one barrier(障碍) is the inside voice of judgment that locks up our creative spirit within the limits of what we think acceptable. It"s the voice that whispers to you, "They"ll think I"m foolish," or "That will never work." But we can learn to recognize this voice of judgment and have the courage to discount its unhelpful advice. Once you have thought about all the relevant(相关的) pieces and pushed your mind to the limits, you can let the problem remain and take in all you have gathered. It"s a stage when much of what goes on occurs outside your focused awareness. As the saying goes, "You sleep on it." We are more open to creative thoughts from the unknowing mind when we are not really thinking of anything. That is why daydreams are so useful in the search for creativity. Anytime you can just daydream and relax is useful in the creative process: a shower, long drives, a quiet walk, etc. With luck, daydreaming will lead to a light turning on above your head, when all of a sudden the answer will come to you as if from nowhere. This is the popular stage—the one that usually gets all the glory and attention, the moment that people sweat and long for, the feeling "This is it!" But the thought alone is still not a creative act. The final stage is translation, when you take your creative thought and transform it into action; it becomes useful to you and others. 小题1:In Paragraph 1, “the moving of the creative spirit” probably means ________.A.preparation | B.exploration | C.problem-solving | D.inspiration | 小题2:According to the article, what keeps us from creativity?A.Having less information to form a good idea. | B.Relying on others during the creative process. | C.Caring about other people’s opinions about us. | D.Thinking about too many ideas at the same time. | 小题3:What can we learn from the fifth paragraph?A.The unknowing mind is very difficult for us to understand. | B.Creativity arrives when we aren’t focused on any one thing. | C.Daydreaming is useless and has nothing to do with creativity. | D.Showers, long drives and quiet walk are good for our bodies. | 小题4:When does creativity become useful to us and others?A.When thought is turned into action. | B.When people understand our ideas. | C.When the popular stage is reached. | D.When we think “This is it!”. | 小题5:Which of the following would the author probably support?A.The creative spirit means an occasional great thought. | B.Others’ voice of judgment allows us to ignore barriers. | C.Creative problem-solving calls for barrier-free imagination. | D.Daydreaming is sure to bring a sudden answer to a problem. |

I moved from Chicago to Brooklyn in July of 2010,just in time to watch my mother die. Our parents were both gone now; I took with me as many things they had left behind as I could. I was out walking one Saturday later that summer when something caught my eye - a pale green dress. Laid out on the pavement was stuff like earrings, glass candle-holders, books. Hanging on the fence behind were a few pairs of jeans and a green cotton dress. The woman, the host o£ the stoop (门廊)sale, looked like she was getting rid of a past she didn’t need or want. A dress that was too big for her. A chest of drawers that took up too much space, space she needed, maybe, to heal ,recover, or grow. I wasn’t planning on buying anything really, but now I needed to show her that I appreciated her things and I would give them a safe home. Then I had my first stoop sale —I paid her 20 dollars for her green cotton dress and her blue candle-holder, From that day on, I became interested in stoop sales. Some of my favorite things are from someone else’s life. I find no joy in shopping at regular stores any more. I love trying to sniff out a memory from a bud vase or a drawer. It is comforting to know that someone has breathed and laughed inside a sweater before me. A few weeks ago, I carried my mother’s dresses to a friend’s stoop. These were her best items ,which were once worn by the most important person in my life. For many hours, I watched from across the path people advancing the stoop, some leaving with Mom1S dress. I used to think that her stuff was as forever sacred (神圣的)as my memory of her, I know now that once I love a scarf or shirt too dearly,it needs to find a new home. Even that green dress is long gone by now. 小题1:The author took her mother*s dresses after her death because ______A.she valued the things used by her mom | B.she didn’t want to throw them, away | C. she could sell them later | D. they were her mom’s best items | 小题2:From the passage, we know that ______.A. the things the author bought from the woman are too big | B. the author is fond of imagining others’ life experiences | C. the author will never shop at regular stores any more | D. the author still keeps most of her mom’s things | 小题3:In the last paragraph ,the author tries to tell us that ______. A her mom is the number one person in her life B. she didn’t really want to sell her mom’s dresses C. she still thinks of her mother quite often D. love doesn’t mean holding on to something tightly 小题4:It can be inferred that the author will ______.A. not sell her own things at stoop sales | B.keep her mom in her mind in another way | C. be sad about all the memory of her mom | D. move to another city for a new life |

My job was to make classroom observations and encourage a training program that would enable students to feel good about themselves and take charge of their lives. Donna was one of the volunteer teachers who participated in this . One day, I entered Donna’s classroom, took a seat in the back of the room and . All the students were working a task. The student next to me was filling her page with “I Can’ts.” “I can’t kick the soccer ball.” “I can’t get Debbie to like me.” Her page was half full and she showed no of stopping. I walked down the row and found was writing sentences, describing things they couldn’t do. By this time the activity aroused my , so I decided to check with the teacher to see what was going on I noticed she too was busy writing. “I can’t get John’s mother to come for a parents’ meeting.” I felt it best not to . After another ten minutes, the students were to fold the papers in half and bring them to the front. They placed their “I Can’t” statements into an empty shoebox. Then Donna hers. She put the lid on the box, tucked it under her arm and headed out the door. Students followed the teacher. I followed the students. Halfway down the hallway Donna got a shovel from the tool house, and then marched the students to the farthest corner of the playground. There they began to . The box of “I Can’ts” was placed at the of the hole and then quickly covered with dirt. At this point Donna announced, “Boys and girls, please join hands and your heads.” They quickly formed a circle around the grave. Donna delivered the eulogy (悼词). “Friends, we gathered here today to the memory of ‘I Can’t.’ He is by his brothers and sisters ‘I Can’ and ‘I Will’. May ‘I Can’t’ rest in . Amen!” She turned the students and marched them back into the classroom. They celebrated the of “I Can’t”. Donna cut a large tombstone from paper. She wrote the words “I Can’t” at the top and the date at the bottom, then hung it in the classroom. On those rare occasions when a student and said, “I Can’t,” Donna pointed to the paper tombstone. The student then remembered that “I Can’t” was dead and chose other statement.
