I first met Sean one summer day. He carried a bag    36 with four clubs(球杆)  and some balls. He was a lot   37  than other kids of his age. I heard he was   38   from cancer. Still , he always seemed to be smiling whenever I would see him with his friends, trying to  39  as far as he did.
A year or so passed and I hadn’t   40  Sean .I had heard that his cancer was   41      him. Still, his friends said he was going to come here before long.
42  enough , he was there the following week. I   43  that one of his friends was carrying Sean’s bag. I saw Sean was having a(n)  44  time trying to drive the ball. Sean hit his last ball as hard as his fragile body would   45  .It flew up to the green and was out of sight. One of his friends   46  Sean walk up to the green. It was a(n)  47 walk because the green was higher than the tee(发球区).
Suddenly I saw one boy pick up Sean’s ball and    48  it in the hole. Then he ran and   49  to look for his own ball.
When Sean finally got to the green, he looked   50  because he thought he hit it over .
Then he glanced in the hole. A smile   51  his face! The boys looked at each other and said , “You can’t tell me it’s a hole-in-one!”
“No, really ! Look !” he said . They all acted    52  and as I watched , I thought Sean looked like the   53   guy I had ever seen. I never saw Sean or his friends after that day.   54   it was then that I learned just what golf should be .
It’s not about what   55  you get or how far you drive. It is about caring for the friends you play with and enjoying the time you have with them.

In 1982, Steven Callahan was crossing the Atlantic alone in his sailboat when it struck something and sank. He was out of the sailing track and floating in a lifeboat, alone. His supplies were  36 . His chances of surviving were small.  37 when three fishermen found him seventy-six days later, he was alive — much  38 than he was when he started, but alive.
His  39 of how he survived is interesting and attractive. His subtle act — how he  40 to catch fish, how he evaporated sea water to 41 fresh water — is very interesting. But the thing that  42 my eye was how he managed to keep himself going when all hope seemed lost, when it seemed no  43  continuing the struggle, when he was  44  greatly, when his lifeboat was pierced and after more than a week’s struggling with his weak body. He was starved and  45  exhausted. Giving up would have seemed the only sensible choice.
When people  46 these kinds of circumstances, they do something with their minds that gives them the courage to keep going. Many people in  47 dangerous circumstances give in or go mad. Something the survivors do with their thoughts helps them find the courage to carry on  48 major difficulties.
"I tell myself I can  49 it," wrote Callahan in his book. "Compared to what others have been through, I"m fortunate. I tell myself these things over and over,  50  courage and strength."
I wrote that down after I read it  51 it struck me as something important. And I"ve told myself the same thing when my own goals seemed 52 off or when my problems seemed too powerful. And every time I"ve said it, I have always come back to my senses.
The truth is, our circumstances are only bad  53 to something better. But others have been through much worse, that is, in comparison with what  54 have been through, you"re fortunate. Tell this to yourself over and over again, and it will help you  55 the rough spots with a little more perseverance(毅力) .

My six-year-old granddaughter stared at me as if she were seeing me for the first time.”Grandma, you are an antique(古董),”she said. "You are old. Antiques are old. You are my antique."
I was not satisfied to let the matter rest there. I took out the Webster"s Dictionary and read the definition(定义)to Jenny.I explained, "An antique is not only old, it"s an object existing since or belonging to earlier times...a work of art... piece of furniture. Antiques are treasured,"I told Jenny as I put away the dictionary. "They have to be handled carefully because they sometimes are very valuable. In order to qualify as an antique, the object has to be at least 100 years old."
"I"m only 67,"I renunded Jenny.
We looked around the house for other antiques, besides me. There was a desk that was handed down from rone aunt to another and finally to our family. "It"s very old,"I told Jenny.“I try to keep it polished and I show it off whenever I can. You do that with antiques."
There was a picture on the wall purchased at a garage sale. It was dated 1867. "Now  that"s an antique," I boasted. "Over 100 years old." Of course it was marked up and scratched and not in very good condition. "Sometimes age does that," I told Jenny. "But the marks are good marks. They show living, being around. That"s something to display with pride. In fact, sometimes, the more an object shows age, the more valuable it can become." It was important that I believed this for my own self-esteem.
Our tour of antiques continued. There was a vase on the floor. It had been in my house for a long time. I was not certain where it came from but I didn"t buy it new. One thing about antiques, I explained to Jenny, was that they usually had a story. They"d been in one home and then another, handed down from one family to another, traveling all over the place. They"d lasted through years and years. They could have been tossed away, or ignored. or destroyed, or lost. But instead, they survived.
For a moment, Jenny looked thoughtful. “l don"t have any antiques but you," she said. Then her face brightened. "Could I take you to school for show and tell?"
"Only if I fit into your backpack," I answered. And then Jenny"s antique lifted her up and embraced her in a hug that would last through the years.
