It’s easy to see how to help some people, but what about those whose needs are not so clear? This story may have happened not long ago--- but it was a lesson which has stayed with me and helped me ever since. It was Thanksgiving and I was volunteering with my parents at a shelter for the needy. We served hot food to whoever came in. Most of our dinners looked like they had been having hard times; their clothes were worn out and dirty. Then, a man came in, who looked anything but needy. He was well dressed. I wondered what he was doing there and my jaw (下巴) dropped in amazement when he joined the line for food. The closer he came to my service station , the more I muttered (小声抱怨). What was this man doing? Surely he wasn’t going to take food which was meant for those who were really in need! Then my mother quietly took me to one side. She said, “You have thought that the needs of the people who come here must be purely physical, hunger, etc. And this gentleman doesn’t seem to have any of those problems. But what if his needs are emotional(情感的)? What if he needs comfort, friends, or just to be among other human beings? Her words hit me like a ton of bricks! I felt like I should apologize to the man--- but I didn’t. About a week later the shelter received a large donation from an anonymous source. I can’t help but wonder if it came from that man. Now, whenever I meet someone I remember my mother’s lesson and try to send kindness their way, no matter how they look. Needs aren’t always seen. But kindness always makes a difference. 小题1:How did the author feel as the well-dressed man joined the line for food?A.Surprised | B.Excited | C.Nervous | D.Hopeless | 小题2:The author’s mother mainly wanted to tell the author that we ______. A.shouldn’t judge a man by his appearance. | B.shouldn’t complain about others | C.should give others what they want. | D.should accept everything we meet | 小题3:What does the underlined word “anonymous” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?A.Important | B.Unknown | C.Independent | D.Excellent | 小题4:From the last paragraph, we learn that ______. A.seeing is believing | B.it’s difficult to be kind to others | C.some rich people pretend to be poor. | D.we should help people in the way they need. | 小题5:What would be the best title for the text?A.My mother’s influence on my growth | B.The importance of volunteering | C.One of my most shameful experiences | D.My mother’s simple lesson in kindness |

答案
小题1:A 小题2:A 小题3:B 小题4:D 小题5:D |
解析
试题分析: 小题1:A 推理题。根据第二段4,5行I wondered what he was doing there and my jaw (下巴) dropped in amazement when he joined the line for food.说明当他加入队伍的时候,我非常惊讶。故A正确。 小题2:A 推理题。根据文章最后一段no matter how they look. Needs aren’t always seen.说明我们不能以貌取人,故A正确。 小题3:B 推理题。根据本句received a large donation from an anonymous source. I can’t help but wonder if it came from that man.根据后半句我忍不住想这笔钱是来自那个人,故这笔捐款是匿名的。故该词指unknown.故B正确。 小题4:D 推理题。根据妈妈对我所说的话:You have thought that the needs of the people who come here must be purely physical, hunger, etc. And this gentleman doesn’t seem to have any of those problems. But what if his needs are emotional(情感的)? What if he needs comfort, friends, or just to be among other human beings? |

My husband Ollie had retired from teaching and we were making plans to travel together to Florida. Then he was terribly ill and became very weak, hardly able to speak. Weeks passed and it became clear that Ollie was near death, but I prayed day and night that he could get better. One of us was always in Ollie’s hospital room—either me, or our grown children, Bruce and Karen. One day, in his broken and weak speech, Ollie told Bruce, “Go home. You should be with Gwen.” Gwen was Bruce’s wife. They had been married for six years and lived hundreds of miles away. Gwen was about to have a baby. We felt an extra sadness, knowing Ollie would never see his first grandchild. “I don’t want to leave you, Dad,” Bruce said. Ollie repeated, “You should be with Gwen.” Reluctantly, Bruce left. “When the baby comes,” he promised Ollie, “you will be the first to know.” A few days later, around 2 p.m., Ollie awoke from a sleep. He turned and looked at me. I sat close to hear his weak words. “The baby is coming now. It’s a boy,” he said. For a moment his eyes were filled with tears. Then he went back to sleep again. Not long after that, Karen ran into the room. “Bruce called,” she said, a smile lighting her face. “Gwen gave birth to a healthy baby boy around two o’ clock.” Ollie smiled; he had been the first to know. That night, Ollie died in his sleep. 小题1:Ollie didn’t travel to Florida because________.A.he was too weak to travel | B.he could hardly be able to speak | C.he could not afford the trip | D.he was waiting for his grandchild to be born | 小题2:Why did Ollie want Bruce to be with Gwen?A.Ollie thought it was too much trouble for Bruce to stay at hospital. | B.Ollie wanted Bruce to bring the baby along as soon as it was born. | C.Ollie didn’t want his son to be absent when his baby was born. | D.Ollie couldn’t bear his son seeing him dying with a broken heart. | 小题3:The underlined word in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to_______.A.Disappointedly | B.Unwillingly | C.Excitedly | D.Immediately | 小题4:What can we learn from the passage ?A.Ollie and his wife had planned to settle in Florida. | B.Ollie cared for his son more than his daughter. | C.Ollie was sad about not being able to see his first grandchild. | D.Ollie died happy and in peace. |

For many years, I was sure that my suffering was because of my size. I believed that when the weight disappeared, it would take old wounds, hurts, and rejections with it. Many obese(overweight)people also mistakenly believe that changing our bodies will fix everything. Perhaps our worst mistake is believing that being thin means being loved, being special, and being cherished. We imagine what it will be like when we reach the long-awaited goal. We work very hard to realize this dream. Then, at last, we find ourselves there. But we often gain back what we have lost. Even so, we continue to believe that next time it will be different. Next time, we will keep it off. Next time, being thin will finally realize its promise of happiness, and of course, love. It took me a long while to know that there was something more for me to learn about beauty. Beauty standards are different with culture. In Somoa a woman is not considered attractive unless she weighs more than 200 pounds. More importantly, if it’s happiness that we want, why not put our energy there rather than on the size of our body? Why not look inside? Many of us try hard to change our body, but with no result. We have to find a way to live comfortably inside our body and make friends with and cherish ourselves. When we change our attitudes toward ourselves, the whole world changes. 小题1:The passage tries to tell us the importance of ______.A.body size | B.attitudes toward life | C.culture difference | D.different beauty standards | 小题2:What does the underlined word “everything” (paragraph 2) mean?A.All the problems. | B.All the bodies. | C.The whole world. | D.The truth. | 小题3:What can be inferred about the author?A.The author is a Samoan. | B.The author succeeded in losing weight. | C.The author has been troubled by her/his weight. | D.The author probably got wounded in wars or accidents. | 小题4:According to the author, what is the common view of those who have lost some weight first and gained it back later?A.They feel angry about the regained weight. | B.They don’t care about the regained weight. | C.They feel optimistic(乐观的)about future plans on weight control. | D.They think they should give up their future plans on weight control. |

A few years ago, I took a sightseeing trip to Washington, D.C.Standing outside the Ronald Reagan Center, I heard a voice say, “Can you help me?” When I turned around, I saw an elderly blind woman with her hand extended. In a natural reflex, I reached into my pocket, pulled out all of my loose change and placed it on her hand without even looking at her.I was annoyed at being bothered by a beggar. But the blind woman smiled and said, “I don’t want your money.I just need help finding the post office.” In an instant, I realized what I had done.I judged another person simply for what I assumed she had to be.I hated what I saw in myself. This incident re-awakened my belief in humility(谦恭), even though I’d lost it for a moment. The thing I had forgotten about myself is that I am an immigrant.I left Honduras and arrived in the U.S.at the age of 15.I started my new life with two suitcases, my brother and sister, and a strong, serious-minded mother.Through the years, I have been a dishwasher, mechanic and pizza delivery driver among many other humble jobs, and eventually I became a network engineer. In my own life, I have experienced many open acts of prejudice (偏见).I remember a time, at age 17 —— I worked as a waiter, and I heard a father tell his little boy that if he did not do well in school, he would end up like me.I have also witnessed the same treatment of my family and friends, so I know what it’s like, and I should have known better. But now, living in my American middle-class lifestyle, it is too easy to forget my past, to forget who I am and where I have been, and to lose sight of where I want to be going. That blind woman on the streets of Washington, D.C., cured me of my blindness. She reminded me of my belief in humility and to always keep my eyes and heart open.By the way, I helped that lady to the post office. And in writing this essay, I hope to thank her for the priceless lesson. 小题1:We can learn from the first two paragraphs that _______.A.the author regretted his act of prejudice | B.the blind woman needed the money badly | C.the author was as poor as the blind woman | D.the author was a native American | 小题2:According to Paragraph 4, hearing the father’s words, the author was probably _______.A.rather hurt | B.very excited | C.deeply moved | D.greatly inspired | 小题3:According to the passage, the author probably agrees that one should _______.A.be nice to the elderly and the disabled | B.try to experience different kinds of life | C.treat others equally with love and respect | D.think about one’s past as often as possible | 小题4:Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?A.Learn from your past | B.How my dream comes true | C.A Belief that will never change | D.A priceless lesson in the street |

Just then he heard slight, hesitant knocks on his door that sounded clear in the 22 night. “Who’s it?” he wondered, since Tom had no 23 in the new city. And this was the moment he especially disliked being disturbed. 24 , he went reluctantly to the door and opened it impatiently. At the door was a little girl, shyly asking, “Sir, do you have 25 ? I’m your neighbor.” “No,” answered Tom in anger and shut the door violently. “What a nuisance!” he complained over it with his wife. “No sooner had we settled down 26 the neighbor came to 27 things.” After a while, the door was knocked 28 . He opened it and found the same girl outside. But this time she was holding two candles, saying, “My grandma told me the new neighbor downstairs might need candles. She 29 me here to give you these.” Tom was very 30 by what he saw. When he became fully aware, he said, “Thank you and your 31 . God bless you!” At that moment he suddenly realized what caused his 32 in life. It was his 33 and harshness(刻薄)with other people. The person who had cheated him in life was 34 nobody else but himself, for he had fallen for his unsympathetic 35 .
