I still clearly remember that day. I was on the side of the road for close to four hours with my big Jeep. I put signs in the windows that said, “NEED A JACK(千斤顶)”. Right as I was about to give up, a truck stopped and a man got off. He sized up the situation and went back to take a jack. After about two hours, we finished the job with sweats. We were both dirty. His wife produced a large water jug for us to wash our hands in. I tried to put $20 in the man’s hand, but he wouldn’t take it, so instead I went up and gave it to his wife as quietly as I could. I thanked them up one side and down the other. I asked the little girl, their daughter, where they lived, thinking maybe I’d send them a gift. She said they lived in Mexico. They were in Oregon now so Mommy and Daddy could pick cherries for the next few weeks. After that, they were going to pick peaches, and then go back home. After I said my goodbyes and started walking back to the Jeep, the girl called out and asked if I’d had lunch. When I told her no, she ran up and handed me a tamale(玉米粽子). I thanked them again and walked back to my car. When I opened the tamale, what did I find inside? My $20 bill! I ran to the van and the guy rolled down his window. He saw the $20 in my hand, started shaking his head smiling, and with what looked like great concentration said in English: “Today you, tomorrow me.” Then he rolled up his window and drove away, with his daughter waving to me from the back. This family, working on a seasonal basis where time is money, took a couple of hours to help a stranger while others passed by quietly. Since then I’ve helped many people like the Mexican family. I didn’t accept money. But every time I was able to help, I felt as if I was putting something in the bank. 小题1:From the passage we know that __________.A.the Mexican man couldn’t speak English | B.the author’s car broke down on the road | C.the Mexican family came to Oregon for a visit | D.$20 was a small amount for the Mexican family | 小题2:Why did the author give the money quietly to the man’s wife?A.Because the man had refused to accept it. | B.Because the man’s wife needn’t wash her hands. | C.Because the author thought the Mexican family was poor. | D.Because the author thought the man’s wife would take it. | 小题3:The Mexican man helped the author because he tended to think that ___________.A.it was completely wrong for others to pass by quietly | B.it was quite easy to help the author mend the jeep | C.it was possible that everyone might get into trouble | D.the author was a polite stranger and deserved the help | 小题4:Which of the following is TRUE about the author?A.He hated those who didn’t offer help. | B.He would send a present to the family soon. | C.He wondered why they didn’t take the money. | D.He considered helping others as saving money in the bank. | 小题5:What can we infer from the passage?A.The Mexican family lived a richer life than the author. | B.The Mexican family did seasonal work in Oregon each year. | C.The author was inspired to help others by the Mexican family. | D.What made the writer moved was the tamale given by the girl. |

When I first got an e-mail account ten years ago, I received communications only from family, friends, and colleagues. Now it seems that every time I check my e-mail,I have an endless series of advertisements and other correspondence that do not interest me at all. If we want e-mail to continue to be useful, we need specific laws that make spamming(发送垃圾邮件)a crime. If lawmakers do not do something soon to prohibit spam, the problem will certainly get much worse. Computer programs allow spammers to send hundreds of millions of e-mails almost instantly. As more and more advertisers turn to spam to sell their products, individual e-mail boxes are often flooded with spam e-mails. Would people continue to use e-mail if they had to deal with an annoying amount of spam each time? This problem is troubling individuals and companies as well. Many spam e-mails contain computer viruses that can shut down the entire network of a company. Companies rely on e-mail for their employees to communicate with each other. Spam frequently causes failures in their local communications networks, and their employees are thus unable to communicate effectively. Such a situation results in a loss of productivity and requires companies to repeatedly repair their networks. These computer problems raise production costs of companies, which are, in the end, passed on to the consumer. For these reasons, I believe that lawmakers need to legislate(立法)against spare. Spammers should be fined, and perhaps sent to prison if they continue to disturb people. E-mail is a tool which helps people all over the world to communicate conveniently, but spam is destroying this convenience. 小题1:What does the underlined word “correspondence” in the Paragraph l probably mean?A.messages | B.ideas | C.connections | D.programs | 小题2:According to the text, what is the major cause of the flooding spam?A.Companies rely on e-mail for communications. | B.More people in the world communicate by e-mail. | C.Many computer viruses contain spam e-mail. | D.More advertisers begin to promote sales through spam. | 小题3:According to Paragraph 3, who is the final victim of spam?A.The business. | B.The advertiser. | C.The employee. | D.The consumer. | 小题4:What is the purpose of the text?A.To inform. | B.To educate. | C.To persuade. | D.To instruct. |

Doing community service work, I spent three or four hours handing out warm dinner to the homeless out in the streets. After that I went to a 16 shelter not far from the Bay Bridge. I was in high school and at the time my sister was too young to 17 . She wanted to help, 18 she made four or five dozen chocolate chip cookies for me to 19 and hand out to people. When getting to the homeless shelter I passed out the remaining meals. I had the containers with my 20 cookies in them and began to 21 , offering them to anyone near me. I 22 an old gentleman and said, “Sir, would you like a cookie?” He stopped and turned around, looked at me 23 in the eye and said, “What did you say? Did you call me sir?” I told him I had, and his eyes 24 a little bit and he said, “No one has 25 called me sir.” He was completely taken aback. It struck me. I explained I had been raised that 26 color and social status, everyone deserved 27 . It made me 28 to think that just because he was homeless, no one 29 him the honor. It broke my 30 , and I couldn’t help 31 cry. I just didn’t understand 32 no one ever called him sir? I had never thought that anyone was below me because I wasn’t raised that way. Every 33 person deserves to be treated with dignity. Years later, I still carry that memory and the 34 it taught me. Sometimes, what we take for granted can 35 make a difference in someone’s life. How have you made a difference to others? How have others made a difference to you?

I wandered in the park. The park bench was___21___ as I sat down to read beneath the long, straggly (蔓延的) branches of an old willow tree. I was disappointed by life with ___22___ reason to frown, for the world was intent on dragging me down. ___23___ that weren"t enough to ruin my day, a young boy out of ___24___ approached me, all tired from play. He stood right before me and said with great excitement, "Look what I found!" In his hand was a flower, and what a ___25___ sight, with its petals(花瓣) all worn --- not enough rain, or too little light. I faked a small ___26___, wanting him to take his dead flower and leave, and then ___27___. But instead of leaving he sat next to my side and placed the flower to his nose and declared with surprise, "It surely smells pretty and it"s beautiful, too. That"s why I picked it; here, it"s for you." The weed before me was dying or dead. Not brilliant colors, orange, yellow or red. But I knew I must ___28___ it, or he might never leave. So I reached for the flower, and replied, "Just what Ineed." But ___29___ him placing the flower in my hand, he held it mid-air without ___30___ or plan. It was then that I noticed for the very first time, that young boy could not see: he was blind. My ___31___ trembled, and tears shone like the sun as I ___32___ him for picking the very best one. "You"re welcome," he smiled, and then ran off to play, not ___33___ of the impact he"d had on my day. I sat there and wondered how he ___34___ to see a self-pitying woman beneath an old willow tree. How did he ___35___ my difficult situation? ___36___ from his heart, he"d been blessed with true ___37___. At last I could see, ___38___ the eyes of a blind child, the problem was not with the ___39___; the problem was me. And for all of those times I myself had been ___40___, I vowed(发誓) to see beauty, and appreciate every second that"s mine. I held that wilted(枯萎) flower up to my nose and breathed in the fragrance of a beautiful rose and smiled as that young boy.

I can still remember the first day when I met my best friend. I hid behind my mother and she hid behind her grandmother, 36 to look at each other. But we soon lost the 37 and started playing with each other. In the 7th grade, I first lost touch with her. She was 38 family problems and I deserted her to be with the “cooler people.” 39 of my new friends liked her as much as I did 40 they knew she had “problems”. However, every summer we would 41 sit at each other’s home and watch soap operas and talk about everything we liked. It was last year when I 42 the problem. I guess I was just too busy in high school to realize she needed someone there for her. Well, she made a new “best friend” and 43 did I. Then I didn’t know why, but she started cutting herself. She was diagnosed with clinical depression(抑郁症). I was very 44 at first, but with the late night calls, we still stayed in 45 . I wanted to be there for her since her new best friend 46 deserted her, when people were calling her 47 , but I knew I still 48 her like a sister. Yesterday she came 49 me and said this,” I never knew what a best friend was 50 I found you were the only person that would stop me from cutting, the only person that ever made me feel better about myself and my 51 . You don’t know this but I was trying to kill myself one night when you 52 me. I 53 you so much, and you didn’t even know you were 54 me.” We both cried. And I guess a kind of lesson from my life so far is to never 55 your friends.
