One day an old woman was traveling alone in the mountains. Suddenly she saw something shining in the stream. When she came close, she found it was a precious stone. She put the stone into her bag and went on with her trip. The next day the old woman met a young man, who was also a traveler in the mountains. The young man looked very hungry, so the old woman opened her bag to share her food. The hungry traveler saw the precious stone and asked carefully, “The stone is beautiful. Would you like to give it to me?” “Sure. Why not?” the woman said, and handed the stone to him. The young man left happily with the stone. He knew it was worth enough to give him security for a lifetime. But a few days later he came back to return the stone to the woman. “I’ve been thinking,” he said. “I know how valuable the stone is, but I give it back and hope that you can give me something even more precious. Give me what you have within your bag.” The woman opened her bag. It was almost empty. Impossible cases are not forever. While it is impossible for one person, it is possible for another. In a word, everything is possible. Someone says, "Success belongs to those who can look at the complex challenges offered by the world as inspiration." So your challenges are golden opportunities for success. How can there be miracles if there are no obstacles? How will you chase the storm if there is no storm? You need challenges to reveal your ability. Success doesn’t come out’ of nothing; success comes from the problems you face. Those who refuse to give in come out smiling. Robert X. Perez says, "The seeds of success spring from failure’s ashes. "Failure is not defeat; it is the pointer to do better than what you just did. You have to know that you are in a constant study of life. What you face is for your training. Samuel Aidoo says, "Each failure is simply another chapter in the story of our lives. To fail is to understand what not to do. Remember it and don’t give up until your goal is achieved." What do you do when you face difficulty? Yeah, life is difficult, but you do not give up. Have a positive and calm outlook on your circumstances (状况) and make the best of them. You may learn something new. You can develop mental toughness. Mental toughness means to be able to see the long-term gains rather than be put off by short-term pains. Once you have this toughness, you have the winning edge(优势). The only things in life you ever really regret are the chances you didn’t take. You will regret when you see the consequences of not seizing the opportunities when they arose. Take chances every day! 小题1: The main point of the passage is that_________.A.success comes out of nothing | B.never give up and you may achieve success | C.everything is easy to deal with | D.impossible things do not exist | 小题2: According to the author, success often comes to people who_________.A.have good opportunities | B.face failure | C.don’t fear difficulties | D.have a lot of luck | 小题3:Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?A.We can perform miracles by overcoming difficulty. | B.We will become greater after overcoming difficulty. | C.Most of us can’t show our ability because of difficulty. | D.Everyone will fail far numerous times because of difficulty. | 小题4: From Paragraph 3 we can learn that_________.A.all people can achieve success if they keep learning | B.failure means great success to everyone in the future | C.most people end up with failure because it often happens | D.failure can help people to achieve success if they don’t give up | 小题5:By saying "How will you chase the storm if there’s no storm?" the writer means_______.A.it’s not necessary to reveal your ability if you are successful | B.we should try our best to find challenges in order to be successful | C.we should not be afraid of challenges because they are opportunities for success | D.we shouldn’t expect miracles because they are always accompanied by obstacles |

Just recently I had been wondering if there was much point in doing little acts of kindness. So often they get 36 , and occasionally they come back to bite you! Then, just last week, after a long travel, I found myself 37 at a bus station. The bus was four hours late! So, I guess I wasn’t in a good 38 . That’s when a woman asked me if I had any spare 39 to help her get a bus ticket. “Oh, sure,” I said sarcastically (挖苦地). “How much would you like?” As I spoke, I mentally kicked myself for my 40 and reached into my bag for some money. As I handed her five dollars, I heard low sounds from her stomach because of real 41 . I reached back into my bag and brought out a 42 I had bought earlier. I handed it to her with a(n) 43 that I hoped would make up for my earlier tone of voice. Getting a 44 look at her now, I realized she was extremely tired, like she had had several months of 45 days! As she took the food, a look of 46 washed over her. In return, she tried to give me a Milwaukee bus ticket! I don’t live in Milwaukee and the ticket will probably 47 be used, but I took it. A few minutes later she came back over, apologized, and told me she was still 48 of five dollars. I took some singles out of my bag and slipped a twenty in there as well. 49 , the voice in my head told me I was being a fool. Five minutes later she came back again and tried to 50 my twenty. When I said it was for her so she could get something else to 51 , and that I was completely serious and I wasn’t taking it 52 , she started crying and hugged me. From now on, when I wonder if it is 53 trying to help someone, I will remember that woman. Maybe I am really making a 54 for someone. So, sure, sometimes my efforts might not be noticed, and sometimes they might come back to bite me, but they might actually 55 another human being!

It was a cold winter. The day my husband fell to his death, it started to snow, just 31 any November day. His 32 , when I found it, was lightly covered with snow. It snowed almost every day for the next four months, while I sat on the couch and watched it 33 . One morning, I walked slowly 34 and was surprised to see a snow remover clearing my driveway and the bent back of a woman clearing my walk. I dropped to my knees and crawled back upstairs, 35 those good people would not see me. I was 36 . My first thought was, how would I ever 37 them? I didn’t have the 38 to brush my hair, 39 clear someone’s walk. Before Jon’s death, I felt proud that I 40 asked for favors. I identified myself by my competence and 41 . So who was I if I was no longer capable? How could I 42 myself if I just sat on the couch every day and watched the snow fall? Learning to receive the love and 43 from others wasn’t easy. Friends cooked for me and I cried. Finally, my friend Kathy said, “Mary, cooking for you isn’t a 44 for me; it makes me feel good to be able to do something for you.” Over and over, I heard 45 words from the people who supported me during those 46 days. One wise man told me, “You aren’t doing nothing because being fully open to your 47 may be the hardest work you will ever do.” I am not the person I 48 was, but in many ways I have changed for the 49 . I’ve been surprised to learn that there is incredible freedom coming form 50 one’s worst fear and walking away whole. I believe there is strength, for sure, in accepting a dark period of our life.

I had the meanest mother in the world. While other kids ate candy for breakfast, I had to have cereal, eggs and toast. Others had cakes and candy for lunch, while we had to eat a sandwich. As you can guess, my supper was different from the other kids’. But at least I was not alone in my suffering. My sister and two brothers had the same mean mother as I did. My mother insisted on knowing where we were at all times. She had to know who our friends were and what we were doing. We had to wear clean clothes every day. Other kids always wore their clothes for days. We reached the height of disgrace(耻辱) because she made our clothes herself, just to save money. The worst is yet to come. We had to be in bed by 9:00 each night and up at 7:45 the next morning. So while my friends slept, my mother actually had the courage to break Child Labor Law. She made us work. I believed she lay awake all night thinking up mean things to do to us. Through the years, our friends’ report cards had beautiful colors on them, black for passing, red for failing. My mother, however, would only be satisfied with black marks. None of us was allowed the pleasure of being a dropout(退学者). She forced us to grow up into educated and honest adults. Using this as a background, I’m now trying to bring up my three children. I’m filled with pride when my children think I am mean because now I thank God every day for giving me the meanest mother in the world. 小题1:From the passage we can learn that the writer’s mother was __________.A.not generous at all | B.very strict with her children | C.very mean with money matters | D.very cruel to her children | 小题2:Which of the following things did the writer hate to do most?
