小题1:A。根据21空后的 “waiting for the final school bell.” anxious(wanting very much)“渴望、焦虑”;courageous“勇敢的、无畏的”;serious“严重的、严肃的、当真的”;cautious“谨慎的”。
小题1:B。upon its ringing="when" it(the bell) rang意为:放学铃声一响,学生们就会习惯性地拥去拿上自己的衣服回家。warn“警告”;call“命名、打电话、大声呼叫、访问等”;yell“吼叫、叫喊”。
scold“训斥、责骂”;realize“意识到、实现”;learn“学习、获悉、熟记”。
小题1:D。此空填入的词应与第二段第一句话 “David was a small boy in ragged clothes.”
popular“受欢迎的、通俗的、流行的”;upset“难过的、沮丧的”;funny“滑稽的、奇怪的、非法的”。
He wore a puzzled look on his face. express“表达、代表”;deliver“递送、宣布、移交”;share“共用、分配、分享”。
小题1:D。根据第二段最后一句 “…then thank me for letting him stay and slowly…” practise“练习、实习、从事”;wander“闲逛、离散、走神”;study“学习、细看、研究”。
小题1: A。 When my parents were away, my grandmother would take care of me.
head for“前往(某地)”,此处指回家;aim at“以…为目的、打算、希望”;turn to“查阅、找(某人寻求帮助)、变成”;put off“推迟”。
小题1:B。这里表示圣诞节临近学生表现出的兴奋,填入的词在语意上应与本句中的 “restlessness”(坐立不安、躁动)保持一致, 故为excitement。argument“争论、辩论、论据”;movement“运动、移动”;judgment“判断力、评价、判决”。
小题1: A。此处指圣诞节引发的学生躁动情绪会持续到学校放假的前一天,故为…until the last day of school before the holiday break. program“计划、方案、节目、程序、课程等”。
小题1: A。 relief: the feeling of happiness that you have when sth. unpleasant stops or does not happen,译为“轻松、宽慰”;in return“作为报答、回过来”;in vain“徒劳、白费”;in control“控制着、处于统治地位”。
He pulled a small box from his back. search“搜寻、搜索、查找”;find“发现、找到、查明”;raise“举起、提升、增加、筹募、养育、饲养等”。
小题1:B。此处指过去发生的一连串动作,即:递盒子给我(handed it to me) ─ 接过盒子(took it) ─ 致谢(thanked him) ─ 打开盒子(unwrapped it)。
delight“高兴、愉快、乐事”;expectation“预期、期待、盼望”;appreciation“欣赏、理解、感激”。
小题1:B。根据文章最后一句话中的描述 “…the little empty box set on my desk.”

此处表明以前我对David的关注太少,与文章第二段中的描述 “We never talked much.”

I hated dinner parties. But I decided to give them another shot because I"m in London. And my friend Mallery invited me. And because dinner parties in London are very different from those back in New York. There, “I’m having a dinner party” means: "I"m booking a table for 12 at a restaurant you can"t afford and we"ll be sharing the checque evenly, no matter what you eat." Worse, in Manhattan there is always someone who leaves before the bill arrives. They"ll throw down cash, half of what they owe, and then people like me, who don’t drink, end up paying even more. But if I try to use the same trick, the hostess will shout: "Where are you going?" And it"s not like I can say I have somewhere to go: everyone know I have nowhere to go.
But in London, dinner parties are in people"s homes. Not only that, the guests are an interesting mix. The last time I went to one, the guests were from France, India. Denmark and Nigeria; it was like a gathering at the United Nations in New York. The mix is less striking. It"s like a gathering at Bloomingdale"s, a well-known department store.
For New Yorkers, talking about other parts of the world means Brooklyn and Queens in New York. But at Mallery"s, when I said that I had been to Myanmar recently, people knew where it was. In New York people would think it was a usual new club.

There is probably no field of human activity in which our values and lifestyles are shown more clearly and strongly than they are in theclothes that we choose to wear. The dress of an individual is a kind of “sign language” that communicates a set of information and is usually the basis on which immediate impressions are formed.Traditionally, a concern for clothes was considered to be an affair of females, while men took pride in the fact that they were completely lacking clothes consciousness.
This type of American culture is gradually changing as man’s dress takes on greater variety  and color.Even as early as 1955,a research in Michigan said that men considered that the value of clothing in daily life was very important.White—collar workers in particular viewed dress as a symbol of ability, which could be used to impress or influence others, especially in the work situation. The white-collar worker was described as extremely concerned about the impression his clothing made on his boss.Although blue-collar workers were less aware that they might be judged on the basis of their clothing, they recognized that any difference from the accepted pattern of  dress would be made fun of by fellow workers.
Since that time,of course, the patterns have changed, the typical white-collar worker may now be wearing the blue shirt, while the blue-collar may be wearing a white shirt, but the importance of dress has not become less. Other researchers in recent years have helped to prove its importance in the lives of individuals at various age levels and in different social and economic status groups.

I moved into a new house in July. Since then I have met a few of my neighbors who are very nice people. For Christmas, I thought I would do something nice for each of the neighbors I know. There were nine neighbors whom I knew by name or spoke with often when I was out in my yard. I knew which houses they lived in.
I decided to add one more to my list. This lady I decided to add lives down the street from me. I meet her every morning walking to work as I drive down the street. She always smiles to me. But I had no idea who she was and which house she lived in.
I planned to make small fruit baskets and leave them on my neighbor"s front porches (门廊) on Christmas Eve. I signed the cards: “Happy Holidays from 5104 Northumberland Road.”
I saved the last for the friendly lady. I finally decided on a house where I met her each morning and guessed that it was hers.
My neighbors really appreciated the baskets and would tell me as they saw me in the yard or they would call, and a couple even came by to thank me.
This morning I found a small note in the mailbox. It was addressed simply: Resident, 5104 Northumberland Road.
The Thank You card really caught me by surprise. I opened it and read the message, “Thank you for the lovely fruit basket you left on our porch. It was very thoughtful. Richard Kelly passed away last week. He talked a lot about how nice it was that someone remembered him in his time of illness. He really appreciated it.”
I had no idea who Richard Kelly was and that he had been seriously ill. I had left that nice lady’s basket on his porch by mistake. I wanted to say sorry, but that would be wrong. I believe that Mr. Kelly was meant to have that basket because he was dying. I hate that the nice lady did not get to receive a fruit basket on Christmas, but I believe if she knew what had happened, she would be happy. I feel pleased to have helped Richard Kelly"s last days be more cheerful.

B.They were thankful that they wanted to be friends.

D.The old lady was happy to sacrifice to make Kelly happy.
