As a music teacher, I have always known that music touches the soul. It can   1    all kinds of
barriers to reach students in a very special way. It can be the   2    for each child to find their light. I
would like to    3    a story about it.
For a few years I was   4    with the opportunity to teach disabled students. One of my most    5
students was a five-year-old girl called Vanessa, who had difficulty walking, and could not speak.
We   6      sat on the floor for our music lessons and Vanessa liked to    7     on my lap(膝上). One of
her favorite songs was "John the Rabbit. " It was a call and response song where I sang the call and the
students     8   twice while singing the repeating phrase, "Oh, yes! " Vanessa liked to    9    her hands
together with mine and clap with me. We probably performed that song during every class, Vanessa
and I clapping together. But she   10     said or sang a word.
One day, when the song was finished, Vanessa turned around,   11     me in the eye, clapped her
tiny hands twice and said the words " Oh, yes 1" I opened my mouth in    12     and for that moment I
was the one who could not speak. When my heart    13     started beating again, I looked over at the
assistant teacher to find her also    14     Through music, we had made an awesome connection.
Several years later, I met Vanessa on the street in town. She waved with a big     15     on her face
and then clapped her hands twice, imitating the song we had     16    so many times in our music class.
The little girl,   17     her connection with music, left an impression on me that will last forever. Every
child has the    18    to learn and grow. It is up to us to   19     the way to reach each and every one
of our students. We all must find each child"s   20     .

If there is one thing that matters in high school-and for your whole life-it is friendships.
My latest novel,THE UNWRITTEN RULE,is about a girl,Sarah, who falls for her best friend
Brianna’s boyfriend,Ryan, but it’s more about wrestling with feelings for a guy that you know you
shouldn’t have.A lot of the book deals with friendship, the kind of lifelong friendship that means the
world to you...and what happens when you realize that maybe it isn’t what you think it is.
Maybe your best friend isn’t your best friend.Maybe she isn’t even a friend at all.
Friendships are tricky things. You can he sure everything is fine, and that your friendship is going
to last forever...and it can just end.No explanation,no anything. And it is not easy.In fact,
I think losing a friend is worse than losing a boyfriend, especially when it is a friend you’ve had in
your life for a long time.
One of the things that Sarah struggles with in THE UNWRITTEN RULE,beyond her feelings
for Ryan,is her friendship with Brianna-how long they’ve been friends, how she understands Brianna
in a way no one else does, and what to do when a crack appears in their friendship, not because
of Sarah’s feelings for Ryan, but because Sarah begins to wonder if maybe Brianna isn’t her best
friend after all.
Having a friendship end is incredibly painful and one of the things I hated when I was younger-and
that I still hate now-is how people say.“Oh,it’ll be okay. You’ll move on,you’ll be fine.”
It is true that you will eventually move on and that you will be fine. But you will also always carry
that lost friendship with you.It may not take up all of your heart like it does at first, but it will take
 part of it.
And that,I think,is something no one ever talks about and that I wish we could - and would.
What do you do when someone you are friends with decides your friendship is over?
How do you deal with it?
Maybe my latest novel can provide something for you.

1. From the passage we can infer that.

A. it may takes Sarah a long time to recover after she lost Brianna’s friendship
B. Sarah and Brianna are still best friends after a long period of time
C. Sarah does not value Brianna’s friendship at all
D. Ryan would feel puzzled about his real love

2. What do you think the book THE UNWRITTEN RULE is mainly about?

A. Friendship
B. School life
C. Love
D. Wrestling with feelings

3. What’s the writer’s attitude towards friendship?

A. We will all lose some friends in our life.
B. Ending a friendship is worse than losing a boyfriend.
C. It’s usual when a crack appears.
D. You will eventually move on after you lose a friendship.

4. What do you think is the best title for the passage above?

A.My Latest Novel
B.Tricky Friends
C.Sarah and Brianna
D.Unforgettable Friendship

I began to grow up when my parents and I were returning from my aunt"s house that winter night, and
my mother said that we would soon leave for America. We were on the bus then. I was crying, and some people on the bus were turning around to look at me. I cried because I could not bear the thought of never hearing the radio program for school children again. I also had to say goodbye to my dear friends and
relatives. I thought about the new country I was going to see-the strange place I had known only from
books and pictures.
The four years that followed taught me the importance of optimism(乐观), but the idea did not come
to me at once. For the first two years in New York, I was really lost-having to study in three schools
because of family moves. I did not quite know what I was or what I should be. Mother remarried, and
things became even more complex for me. Some time passed before my stepfather and I got used to each other. I was often sad, and saw no end to "the hard times."
My responsibilities in the family increased a lot since I knew English better than everyone else at home. I wrote letters, filled out forms, translated at interviews with Immigration officers(移民局官员), took my
grandparents to the doctor and translated there, and even discussed telephone bills with company
representatives.
From my experiences I have learned one important rule: Almost all common troubles go away at last!
Something good is certain to happen in the end when you do not give up, and just wait a little! I believe
that my life will turn out all right, even though it will not be that easy.

B. did not think about her future
C. studied in three different schools
D. got on well with her stepfather
4. What can we learn about the author from Paragraph 3?
A. She worked as a translator.
B. She attended a lot of job interviews.
C. She paid telephone bills for her family.
D. She helped her family with her English.
5. The author believes that __________.
A. her future will be free from troubles
