LiHong,an English teacher at a higher vocational college
in TianJin,is also in charge of hiring foreign
teachers.She wrote this letter to Protessor Smith,who has
agreed to come and teach at her college in the upcoming
semester.
Dear Professor Smith,
It's my pleasure to welcome you to our school!I'm glad
to hear that you are so excited about out city.I'd be happy
to share the history of our name and culture with you.
TianJin is one of the four cities directly governed by
the central government,and is a major economic center in
northern China.It is divided into thirteen districts and
three counties,with a total area of 11 946.88 square
kilometers,94% of which are plains.Situated in the
northeast corner of the North China Plain,TianJin is
bounded by the Yanshan Mountains to the north and Bohai Sea
to the east with a coastline stretching about 153
kilometers.As you enjoy traveling,I believe you will like
it here a lot.
TianJin enjoys four distinct seasons throughout the
years.As the climate is both continental and oceanic,the
weather is relatively comfortable.Since you have been
living in the southern state of Florida for so many
years,living here is sure to be a frech experience for you.
Perhaps we will even have the chance to go ice-skating and
throw snowballs together.
TianJin,which means''the place where the emperor crossed
the river,''first gained its name when a fort was
established here in 1404 A.D.\x09during the Ming Dynasty.The
fort was named TianJin Wei(Wei referring to a Ming Dynasty
military organization).You told me in your letters that you
taught literature and history in the United States,so I'm
sure you will appreciate the history and culture of our
city.
