A spoken language is like a person: it grows and changes. One way its changes is by adding new words and phrases, usually through borrowing. Just as someone borrows a pencil from a classmate in order to finish work, languages borrow words from other languages in order to fill what is called a "word gap". A word gap happens when a language has no term, synonym, or easy translation for an object or activity. One way a language finds something to fill a word gap is to borrow a word from another language. Unlike a person, language never really returns words to their starting place. Instead, the words remain and become part of the borrowing language. We see this borrowing course at work in English in different ways and for different reasons. English, like any other language, will probably continue to borrow words from other languages as long as it continues to change — in other words, for as long as people continue to speak.

If you ask Shaquille O"Neal and some of his NBA fellows, they"ll say "Sure". In the NBA, hip-hop music is as common as the jump shot. Hip-hop is similar (相似的) to rap (说唱) music and is especially popular with young African Americans. This music is played before basketball games or during halftime. Many of the players, like Shaquille O"Neal of the Los Angeles Lakers, write rap rhymes when they travel on airplanes from one city to another. The NBA has a closer connection to hip-hop than any other sports league. This is partly because of the large number of African-American players, but also because the basketball league just loves hip-hop. Every February, the NBA invites popular rap singers to perform (表演) at its All-Star weekend. When they play basketball, some of the younger stars even try to look like hip-hop singers. Like rap stars, they don"t smile in photographs and videos. They try to trouble the players on the other team by looking tough(凶). Since people don"t always say what they mean at work, Robert Phipps, a UK body language expert, tells you how to understand it. If someone has the same idea as yours, they"ll often have the same posture (姿势) as yours. But if a person"s body and feet are turned away from you even though they"re looking at you, it means they"d rather be moving the way their feet are pointing. Most people cross their arms if they have different ideas. So even if someone says they agree with you, if they then cross their arms they really don"t. So try to find out what"s the matter with them or draw them out by handing them something to look at or asking them to do something, such as writing something down. If you"re training someone, it"s useful to know how their mind works. If a person"s eyes move up and to the left while you"re talking to them, they think of information actively, if the eyes only move left they think of sounds, but eyes moving to the right and down shows they learn through their feelings. When people are lying, they don"t often use their hands naturally but make a lot of hand-to-face gesture (手势). Hands or fingers covering the mouth means what they are saying is not true. "Women often wish they had the same chances as men have, and think it is still men"s world," said Dr James Helen, one of the sociologists who did the study. Many men say that they have more duties than women. A man has to make money to support (养活) his family and to make the important decision, so it is right for men to be paid more. Some are even against their wives working at all. When wives go out to work , they say, the home and children can not be taken good care of. If women take full-time jobs, they won"t be able to do what they are best at doing: making a nice home and bringing up the children. Some women disagree. They say they want to get out of their homes and to have freedom (自由) to choose between work and home life. Women have the right of equal pay and equal chances (平等机会). This was not because the woods and fields were always far away, but because they were too far away from the city to permit people to make a day trip between morning and nightfall. In 1907, a young German schoolmaster had an idea which changed this state of affairs. He decided to turn his little schoolhouse into a dormitory for the summer holidays. Anyone who brought his sleeping bag and cooking equipment along could stay there for a very small quantity of money. The idea was a success. A few years later, the schoolhouse was much too small to hold the many young people who wanted to stay there. As a result, a dormitory was set up in an old castle nearby. This was the first Young Hostel. Today, young students and workers of every country can meet in the hostels and get to know each other. When young people arrive at a hostel, they have only to show their card of membership in a hostel organization in their own country. This card will permit them to use the facilities of hostels all over the world for a very low price. Often, at the evening meal, a group of boys and girls from various parts of the country or the world will happen to meet at the same hostel. Canada left the British empire in 1867 to become an independent country, and English and French have been recognized as the official language ever since. | 在短文的空格内填入适当的词,使其内容通顺,每空格限填一词,首字母已给。 | Shanghaihua (上海话):use it or lose it There are about 6.000 languages in the world and some experts say that as many as half of these languages will disappear in the next one hundred years. Will Shanghaihua be one of t 1 ? It"s a question that more people are asking. In China, Putonghua is the official language. That m 2 it"s the language of government, business and the media (媒体). And it"s also the language that is used in schools. Shanghai is a special city. It is modern, fashionable and sophisticated (老练的). And Shanghaihua shows that by being modern, fashionable and sophisticated. "I love riding on the b 3 and listening to people speaking Shanghaihua." Miss Evans, an American reporter said. " I don"t understand a word they are saying but I like the sound of the language. It sounds smoother than Putonghua. And Shanghainese like things "renao" (热闹)so even a discussion about the weather can sound like an argument or a party. My bus rides are a 4 interesting." Young people still speak Shanghaihua but not as well as their parents and grandparents. They are under more and more pressure (压力) to speak Putonghua. So the language is being used l 5 often in everyday life. Some people want to keep the language from disappearing completely by building museums and having cultural festivals to save it. But a language isn"t a painting or a book. It"s a living thing and you e 6 use it or lose it. If people stop using it in their d 7 lives, a museum or a festival will not help. It will be lost forever, like the Yangtze River dolphin. | 阅读下面短文,掌握其大意,然后从 各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C 和D)中,选出最佳选项。 | Australia is an island and it is a continent. Try to imagine what first few months of your life were like. I am sure you just spent most of your time eating, sleeping and crying. As you grew older, you were awake more of the time. It took your parents more time to play with you and talk to you. You watched and listened curiously (好奇). You began to know that people made certain sounds to go with certain things. Then you began to try making the sounds you heard. And step by step you were able to make the right sound for one thing. On that day you came to understand the secret of language. The secret is that a certain sound means a certain thing. One sound might be as good as another. But it is no good as a word unless everybody agrees on its meaning. Only when a group of people use the same set of sounds of things, can they understand each other. Then, and only then do these people have a LANGUAGE. After you found the secret of language, you learned words. Some of the words meant things, such as BOOKS, CHAIRS and SHOES. Some words meant doing things, such as GO and SWIM, and other words describe things, such as GOOD and DIRTY. Soon you learned to put words together to express your idea, such as "I want to go out and play with my friends." This is language. By means of language people can communicate (交流). Back then, winners got silver medals instead of gold ones. Sounds strange, doesn"t it? People thought silver was better than gold. Also, no women ran in the first Olympics, and only 14 countries took part. China was not one of them. But those aren"t the only differences. The Frenchman Baron Pierre de Coubertin (顾拜旦) was the man who really wanted the Games to start again. His idea for the modern Olympics came from the Greek Games thousands of years ago. He hoped they would help to bring world peace. But it took time for the Olympics to become popular. Not many people thought they were good ideas in 1896, so they were put together poorly. Some tourists even ran in races! Today, more than 10,000 people from about 200 countries take part. In the early years of the Olympics, there weren"t many sports. Most events were track and field (田径), much like in the first Greek Games. Events usually took place in the Panathenaic Stadium (雅典体育场), and you can still see it today. Players did not wear their countries" colors in 1896. Their clothes were not like the uniforms people wear today. In fact, players weren"t even picked by their countries back then. They traveled to the Games by themselves and had to use their own money to take part. New sports have been put into the Olympics over time, like badminton and table tennis. Some older games are no longer played, like tug-of-war (拔河). It would be hard to see all the events at this year"s Games. There will be over 300! Swimming was different in 1896. There was a 1,200-metre race in the sea. A boat took swimmers out into the sea and left them to swim back to land. Sometimes rough water made the race dangerous. The first person ever to win that race was Hungarian Alfred Hajos. He seemed happy just to finish."I just wanted to live. That"s more important than winning," he said. When people or teams won events in 1896, they didn"t get the same things as now. They got olive wreaths (橄榄枝花环) to put on their heads and silver medals. | 1. However, there is a small problem. England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are not, in fact, a nation and have different cultures. It seems it is impossible to find a national motto to join the country. Who first had the idea of looking for a motto? British Prime Minister (首相) Gordon Brown started it: He suggested it as part of a public discussion to decide "the ideals (理想) that put us together as a nation". Newspapers couldn"t wait to get the game started. So they asked website readers to tell their own opinions. The one that won a Times Online poll (投票) is "No motto please, we"re British". You may wonder what it really means. The suggestion is that British people don"t like to go to the trouble of having a motto. However, it also suggests that Britain is a place with a long history and rich culture:"We don"t need a motto. We know who we are. We have done quite well without one for over 2,000 years, thanks." Although the discussion seems mainly lighthearted (轻松的), it also has a serious side. The British government is worried that Britain is losing its cultural identity (特性). We can see differences when we pay attention to the way some words are used. Let"s look at the words about animals and ants. Although dogs are thought to be honest and good friends of humans, most expressions in Chinese about the dog, for example, "a homeless dog", "a running dog" and "a dog catching a mouse", have negative meanings. But in Western countries, people use "dog" to describe positive actions. In English, for example, "You are a lucky dog" means "You are a lucky person". And "Every dog has its day" means "Each person has good luck sometimes". However. Chinese love cats very much. But in Western culture "cat" is often used to describe a woman who is cruel (冷的). There are many other examples of how "cat" is used differently as well. The rose is regarded (视为) as a symbol (象征) of love in both China and some Western countries.
