Every day cars kill or hurt many people on roads. Sometimes the drivers drive too fast or do not drive carefully enough .Some of them       traffic rules and cause accidents.
According to some researchers, it is usually the pedestrians(行人) who cause the accidents. A lot of road users are very     . They walk or run across the roads      the cars. They walk in the roads but not on the walkways. Some do not take the time to        the green lights and simply cross the roads against the red lights.
Many people think accidents often happen in        roads in large cities, but this is not always true.       , Tokyo is one of the world’s largest cities and probably one of the busiest cities. However, there are       accidents to pedestrians. The reason is that the police there are very        and the pedestrians are very careful . Pedestrians never cross the roads against a red light and they     follow the traffic rules.
Do you know alcohol(酒精) is another main cause of traffic accidents? It delays(延缓) people’s response(反应). Those who have drunk alcohol are        in making decision. They need a few more seconds to react. Alcohol drinking is especially dangerous for motor car drivers. It is not only drivers who may have accidents after drinking, drunk pedestrians may put their lives in danger as well.

Raising pets is a popular online game among teenagers. "More than 20 of my classmates have adopted(领养)pets online, while last year the number was just 10,” said Wang Hui,a middle school student from Beijing, who also raises pets online.
If you go to some websites, you can adopt virtual(虚拟的)pets like penguins, chickens, dogs and elephants. You can feed, wash, talk to and play with your pet.
Dai Yingshuang of Shanghai raises pets on KaixinOOl. com. The 15-year-old girl said it is great fun. She thinks that she has also learned how to take care of others.
If one doesn"t feed and care for the pet, it becomes unhappy and unhealthy. So raising an online pet means spending a lot of time online.
This makes many parents worried. They fear there will be bad influence in the children"s studies.

"How are you?" is a nice question. It"s a friendly way that people in the USA greet each other. But "How are you?" is also a very unusual question. It"s a question that often doesn"t need an answer. The person who asks "How are you?" hopes to hear the answer "Fine", even if the person"s friend isn"t fine. The reason is that "How are you?" isn"t really a question and "Fine" isn"t really an answer. They are simply other ways of saying "Hello" or "Hi".
Sometimes, people don"t say exactly what they mean. For example, when someone asks "Do you agree?", the other person might think, "No, I disagree. I think you"re wrong..."But it isn"t very polite to disagree so strongly, so the other person might say "I"m not sure." It"s a nicer way to say that you don"t agree with someone.
People don"t say exactly what they are thinking when they want to finish talking with other people. For example, many talks over the phone finish when one person says "I"ve to go now."Often, the person who wants to hang up gives an excuse:"Someone"s at the door.""Something is burning on the stove."The excuses might be real, or not. Perhaps the person who wants to hang up simply doesn"t want to talk any more, but it isn"t polite to say that. The excuse is more polite, and it doesn"t hurt the other person.
Whether they are greeting each other, talking about an idea, or finishing a talk, people don"t say exactly what they are thinking. It"s an important way that people try to be nice to each other, and it"s part of the game of language.

Taking away a city’s rubbish is a big job. Every day trucks come into a city to collect it. Most rubbish is made up of things we can’t eat or use. If we kept these things, we would soon have a mountain of rubbish.
In some cities the rubbish is collected and taken outside of city to a dump. Often the city dump is placed where the ground is low or there is a big hole. The kitchen rubbish is broken into small pieces and sent into the sewage system. The sewage system takes away the used water from toilets, bathtubs and other places.
To keep mice and flies away, some earth is used to cover the newly dumped rubbish. Later, grass may be planted on the rubbish-filled land. Finally , a house or a school may be built there, and then you’d never know that this had once been an old rubbish dump.
In other cities the rubbish is burnt in special places. The fire burns everything but the metal. Sometimes the metal can be used again in factories where things are made of metal. The food parts of rubbish are put in special piles where they slowly change into something called humus, which looks like black earth. It is rich with kinds of things that feed plants and help make them grow.
