Every year thousands of young people in England finish school and then take a year off before they start
work or go to university. Some young people go to other countries and work as volunteers (志愿者). Volunteers
give their time to help people. For example, they work in schools or hospitals, or they do something helpful for
the environment.
Pauline Jones, 18, lives in Cardiff, Wales. Next year she wants to go to university to study Chinese, but now
she"s living in Belize. Pauline says, "I"m working with other people here to save the coral reefs (珊瑚礁) in the
sea near Belize. The reefs here are beautiful, but if the sea water is very polluted (污染), the coral dies. I"m
helping to do research on the coral and the fish that live around the reefs. All over the world, coral reefs are
dying. We need to do something about the problem before it"s too late."
"I"m staying with a family here and I help do some housework. I don"t get any money, but that"s OK. I love
my work here, and I"m learning a lot about the people of Belize-and myself! When I finish my work, I want to
stay here for another three months. I want to travel around Belize and Central America."

The poor countryside children like Xiao Fang and Xiao Lan couldn"t go to school as they hoped. Although there was one small school in the district, their parents were poor and couldn"t afford to send them to school. Children in cities can go to nice schools. When they learned that some poor children in the countryside couldn"t go to school, they quickly organized to help those poor children. They put on performances to collect money for those children. Soon the Hope Project was started, and many other members of the society also offered the countryside children money and other useful things. Soon some Hope Schools were set up and as a result of this, children like Xiao Fang and Xiao Lan can go to school happily.

"Tom? Are you in bed yet?" called Mrs.White. There was no answer. Mrs. White put down her book and went to her 14-year-old son"s room. Tom was sitting in front of a bright computer screen on which a motorbike was running fast. "Oh, Tom. You"re still playing on that computer game. You must stop now, it"s half past eleven. If you don"t go to bed soon, you"ll be very tired tomorrow," said Mrs. White. "But I"ve nearly won the game," Tom said to Mrs. White. She could see the excitement on his face. She sat down beside him. "You"re always playing on the computer. You spend more time on this machine than on your homework." Today more and more families have computers. Parents hope computers can help their children improve their study at school. But many of their children use computers to play games and watch videos instead of studying. We often see that computer net bars are crowded with people, especially young boys. They spend a lot of money competing (竞争) with the computerized (用计算机控制的) machines. The more they lose, the more they want to win. The result is that they don"t want to work or study. In some countries, even scientists hate computers. They say computers cause millions of people to lose their jobs or cause them a lot of trouble. Computer game addiction (瘾) is a serious problem in social (社会的) life. Something has to be done to solve the problem.
