Music is different from songs. Songs express feelings with lyrics(歌词), but music

题型:不详难度:来源:
Music is different from songs. Songs express feelings with lyrics(歌词), but music with tones (音调).Unlike songs, music tones in themselves have no specific meanings. Different people may get different things from the same musical performance. Though some music works are difficult to understand, people need music in their daily life because it brings fun to them. Different people like different music: some love classical music, and others take an interest in pop music. Most young people like pop music.
Pop music began in the USA and became popular around the world during the 1950s and 1960s.The best-known early kind of pop music was “rock and roll”. Pop music has taken the place of (取代)native music in many parts of the world. It has caused the number of people for “jazz” music to become much smaller than in the 1950s and earlier and it has now begun to become the most popular. Much pop music is without artistic value (艺术价值), but the works of some pop singers such as the Beatles, Bob Dylan, the groups like Pink Floyd and Crosby are excellent. And there is still great interest in it today. Pop music concerts and festivals are held all over the world.

You either have it, or you don’t—a sense of direction, that is. But why is that some people would find their way across the Sahara without a map, while others can lose themselves in the next street?
Scientists say we’re all born with a sense of direction, but it is not properly understood how it works. One theory(理论) is that people with a good sense of direction have simply worked harder at developing it. Research being carried out at Liverpool University supports this idea and suggests that if we don’t have it, we lose it.
“Children as young as seven have the ability to find their way around,” says Jim Martland, Research Director of this project. “However, if they are not allowed out alone or are taken everywhere by car, they never develop the skills.”
Jim Martland also emphasized(强调) that young people should be taught certain skills to improve their sense of direction. He makes the following suggestions:
If you are using a map, turn it to the way you are facing.
If you leave your bike in a strange place, put it near something like a big stone or a tree. Note landmarks on the route as you go away from your bike. When you return, go back along the same route.
The simple way of finding your direction is by using lines such as streets in a town, streams, or walls in the countryside to guide you. Count your steps so that you know how far you have gone and note any landmarks such as tower blocks or hills which can help you find out where you are.
Now you will never get lost again!

Good health is very important. Everyone should do all he can to stay healthy. Being in good health means having both body and mind in good order, free from illness and pain.
Good food, plenty of water, cleanness and plenty of rest all help in keeping our machines running as they should. Food does many things for our bodies. It gives what we need for keeping good health. It gives us energy for work and play. No food gives everything we need. We should eat foods of different kinds. Having enough to eat is not the same as having the right food.
The water we drink helps wash away wastes formed inside our bodies. It also puts back the water we lose when we perspire(流汗). Our bodies are actually more than half water. We must drink enough to replace what we lose.
We feel better and look better when we are clean. A bath every one or two days is a good rule for most of us. Brushing our teeth is important part of keeping clean.

The first English week at our school started on May 4th, 2009. The whole school was filled with an English learning atmosphere. A series of activities was held. There were handwriting activities, story writing, English songs, role playing in English, and so on, all the teachers and students were very happy. They spoke English, sang English songs and enjoyed all the activities. Handwriting was for the students in lower grades. Although most of them couldn’t write so well, they were all very careful about it. In the show window, there were a lot of colorful handwritten papers. They copied some articles from books or newspapers. And then they decorated(装饰) them with pictures in different colors, and some even put their own photos on them. How cute and lovely they looked!

Try reading the following sentences as fast as you can. “She sells seashells by the seashore. The shells she sells are surely seashells. So if she sells shells on the seashore, I’m sure she sells seashore shells.”
Not very easy, was it? What you’ve just read is called a tongue twister (绕口令). It is an exercise made up of sounds that are hard to pronounce(发音,读) in order to help people pronounce words faster and more correctly. Try the next example.
“Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled pepper. Did Peter Piper pick a peck of pickled peppers? If Pete Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers, where’s the peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked?”
Tongue twisters usually do not have much meaning. They are just designed to improve people’s ability  to pronounce words. Although they may be very difficult, these exercises are very important to people who are trying to speak English correctly. This is because tongue twisters help people to tell the differences between similar sounds.
So if you wish to pronounce words more smoothly, you’d better try picking out some tongue twisters and practicing them.
小题1:Tongue twisters are helpful in improving ___________ skills.
