Cats are the most popular pets among Americans. So it is not surprising there are many expressions about cats. Do you know any of them? Now let me introduce some to you.
Some cats like to catch small birds, like canaries. If someone looks very proud or satisfied with himself, we say he looks like the cat that ate the canary.
Sometimes, a cat likes to play with a small animal it catches. So if you play cat and mouse with someone, you change between different kinds of behavior when dealing with another person. For example, a child might offer something sweet to her little brother, and then take it away when reaches for it.
A cat will often catch a small animal and present it to its owner. The saying “that looks like something the cat dragged in (把…拖进来)” describes something in bad condition.
A fat cat is a person with a lot of money.
There are many other expressions about cats in America. How interesting! Which kind of cat are you, or which kind would you like to be?

A week ago, Columbus Middle School asked the parents of their school to choose a sport for their child to play. Here’s some information about the sports.
Sports 1: Basketball
We expect that this will be the most popular of the four sports. So students should sign up (报名) as soon as possible. Students will take a private bus to and from Kwun Tong Sports Park. Each student will have to pay $ 10 each time for the cost of the bus. There will be four basketball courts available for our use with one teacher watching over each game.
Sports 2: Gym
We will use St. Peter’s Park. There are two reasons for choosing this park. First, it is not very busy and crowded before 6:00 p.m. Second, it has lots of trees with plenty of shade. Students must bring along two bottles of water to prevent from being thirsty. All the activities here are free. And there will be a teacher on duty for each activity.
Sports 3: Hiking
Hiking (远足)will be at Kowloon Peak. The activity will start at 2:30 p.m. and finish 90 minutes later. There will be 15 students in each group. And three teachers will be with the students. This sport will cost $ 75 per hour. Students should take plenty of water and sunglasses.
Sports 4: Swimming
The Kowloon City Swimming Centre is a 10-minute walk from our school. Four teachers will go to the pool and watch the students from the poolside. We will only be able to use the pool for one hour (2: 45 p.m. to 3:45 p.m.). Only students skillful at swimming can take up this activity. The pool will have two lifeguards on watch. Want a good night"s sleep? Then turn off your computer, cell phone or PSP two hours before you go to bed.
These things have bright lights. When our eyes see bright lights just before sleep, our sleep patterns (模式) change, a study has found.
Our body clock starts shutting us down for bed at 9 or 10 pm. But bright lights make our minds think that it is still daytime. That wakes us up and leaves us sleepless, experts say.
But if you read a paper book before sleeping, you won"t have this problem. This is because light from a bedside lamp (台灯) does not go straight into our eyes.
Also, if you are watching a television from across the bedroom, you won"t have problems falling asleep. The TV sends light to us from a distance, so the light won"t be as strong.

Dolphins are not fish. They are mammals (哺乳动物).They live in groups and speak to each other in their own language. But they are quite different from almost all land animals. Their brain(大脑)is as big as men"s and they live a long life at least 20 or 30 years.
Like some animals, dolphins use sounds to help them find their way around. They also use these sounds to talk to each other and to help them find food. They do not use their ears to receive sounds, but use the jaw--the lower part of the mouth.
It is strange that dolphins are friendly to men, and for thousands of years, there are many stories about dolphins and men. In the 19th century, in a dangerous part of the sea near New Zealand, there was a dolphin. The seamen liked him very much and gave him a very good name, Jack. From 1871 to 1903 ,Jack met every boat in the area and showed it the way. In 1903 a passenger on a boat with the name of The Penguin shot and hurt Jack. Luckily the dolphin didn"t die, and after a long time he was well again. He guided the ships through the area for nine more years, but he refused to help the boat of the Penguin.
