[1]People with lower intelligence are more likely to be unhappy than their brighter colleagues, according to UK researchers, Their study of 6,870 people showed low intelligence was often linked with lower income and poor mental health, which contributed to unhappiness. The researchers are calling for more help and support to be targeted at people with lower IQs. Their findings were published in the journal Psychological Medicine.
[2]The researchers analyzed data from the Adult Psychiatric Morbity Survey in England. One of the questions was:“Taking all things together, how would you say you were these days—very happy ,fairly happy or not too happy?” The highest part saying they were “        ”was found in people with an IQ between 120 and 129-43% said they were very happy..
[3]However, the highest proportion saying “not too happy”was found in people with an IQ between 70 and 79. The study said lower intelligence was linked to lower income, worse health and needing help with daily life, such as shopping or housework—all of which contributed to unhappiness.
[4]Dr Hassiotis said:“There is some evidence that long term strategies directed at young children from poor backgrounds can have a positive impact on IQ, wellbeing and life opportunities”. Such interventions(干涉)are likely to be costly, but the initial costs may be offset(抵消)by future benefits such as a reduced reliance on state benefits and better mental and physical health”.
[5]He added that the study was particularly helpful as it identified some of the factors(因素)that influence the association between IQ and happiness. The study also emphasized the interventions to prevent lower IQ leading to greater unhappiness.

A vast dust storm that blew in from the deserts of Australia’s red centre has blanketed the country’s largest city and eastern coast in a red fog, causing widespread traffic chaos and severe flight delays.
Residents from Sydney in New South Wales to Canberra inland and towns in southern Queensland awoke to a red sky and greatly reduced visibility after the country’s worst dust storm in 70 years blew in overnight. The Sydney Harbor Bridge and Opera House were covered in the red fog and hundreds of people were reported to have breathing problems. Children, the elderly and those suffering from asthma (哮喘) or heart or lung diseases were advised to stay indoors ,as even healthy adults reported "itchy throats" and a metallic aftertaste in their mouths after walking through the thick fog.
Commuters used face masks, originally intended to protect them from the spread of swine flu, to hurry across the blocked streets on their way to work. Some schools were closed and sports activities were called off as the conditions pushed air pollution levels to 1500 times their normal levels – the highest on record.
Passengers at the busy Sydney Airport faced delays of up to six hours for international flights and three hours for domestic trips, and even some international flights were cancelled as visibility was reduced to just a few feet.
Locals, phoning radio stations to express their shock at the red dawn.” It’s like a nuclear winter morning," tourist Peter Wilson told Daily Telegraph, "It is so terrible." adding that when he awoke the sky was "bright red" and "all the cars were covered in dirt".
The dust hanging over Sydney had largely cleared by midafternoon, although national carrier Qantas said severe delays would last all day because of direction-changed and late-running flights.
The sand storm, which measured more than 310 miles wide and 620 miles long, was caused by dust clouds blowing east from Australia’s dry places, which has been attacked by the worst drought on record. It covered dozens of towns and cities in two states as strong winds swept away tons of topsoil threw it high into the sky and carried it hundreds of miles.

In a family where the roles of men and women are not sharply separated and where many household tasks are shared to a greater or lesser extent, notions of superiority are hard to maintain. The pattern of sharing in tasks and in decisions makes for equality, and this in turn leads to further sharing. In such a home, the growing boy and girl learn to accept that equality more easily than did their parents and to prepare more fully for participation in a world characterized by cooperation rather than by the “battle of sexes”.
If the process goes too far and man’s role is regarded as less important—and that has happened in some cases—we are as badly off as before, only in reverse.
It is time to reassess the role of the man in the American family. We are getting a little tired of “Momism”— but we don’t want to exchange it for a “neo-Popism”. What we need, rather, is the recognition that bringing up children involves a partnership of equals. There are signs that psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and specialists on the family are becoming more aware of the part men play and that they have decided that women should not receive all the credits nor all the blame. We have almost given up saying that a woman’s place is in the home. We are beginning, however, to analyze man’s place in the home and to insist that he does have a place in it. Nor is that place irrelevant to the healthy development of the child.
The family is a cooperative enterprise for which it is difficult to lay down rules, because each family needs to work out its own ways for solving its own problems. Excessive authoritarianism has unhappy consequences, whether it wears skirts or trousers, and the ideal of equal rights and equal responsibilities is closely linked not only to a healthy democracy, but also to a healthy family.

[1] Mental and health experts believe personality plays an important part in how we experience stress. Personality is the way a person acts, feels and thinks.
[2] Some people are aggressive and always in a hurry. They often become angry when things do not happen the way they planned. They are called “Type A” personalities. Studies suggest that these people often get stress-related disorders. The “Type B” personality is calmer. These people are able to deal with all kinds of situations more easily. As a result, they are less affected by stress.
[3] Studies have also shown that men and women deal with stress differently. Women seem to be better able to deal with stress than men are. However, experts say women are three times more likely to develop depression(抑郁) in reaction to the stress in their lives. American writer John Gray became famous for his book Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus(金星). He notes that men and women have opposite ways of dealing with stress. For a man, the best way is to rest and forget about daily problems. But a woman suffering from stress needs to talk about her problems.
[4] Experts say there are several ways to deal with stress, including deep breathing, exercise, eating healthy foods, getting enough rest and balancing the time spent working and playing. Exercise is one of the most effective stress- reduction measures, as physical changes from exercise make you feel better. In addition, exercise can also improve the body’s defense system against disease.
[5] Keeping stress to yourself can make problems worse. Experts say that expressing emotions to friends or family members or writing down your feeling can help reduce stress. And they also suggest that people should attempt to accept or change stressful situations whenever possible.
