Brenda Bongos was a happy, artistic girl. She had one big dream—to play the drums in a band. But one big problem lay in her way. To be good enough to play in a band, Brenda had to practice a lot, but she lived next-door to a lot of old people. Many of them are sick. She knew that the sound of beating drums would really get on their nerves. So, she had tried playing in the strangest places: a basement, a kitchen, and even in a shower. But there was always someone it would annoy. One day, while watching a science documentary on TV, she heard that sound cannot travel in space, because there"s no air. At that moment, Brenda Bongos decided to become a sort of musical astronaut. With the help of a lot of time, books and work, Brenda built a space bubble. This was a big glass ball connected to a machine which sucked out all the air inside. All that would be left inside was a drum kit(成套设备) and a chair. Brenda got into the space suit she had made, entered the bubble, turned on the machine, and played those drums like a wild child. It wasn"t long before Brenda Bongos came very famous. Many people came to see her play in her space bubble. Shortly afterwards she came out of the bubble and started giving concerts. Her fame spread so much that the government suggested that she be part of a unique space journey. Finally, Brenda was a real musical astronaut, and had gone far beyond her first ambition of playing drums in a band. Years later, when asked how she had achieved all this, she thought for a moment, and said: ""If those old people next–door hadn"t mattered so much to me, I wouldn"t have found a solution, and none of this would have ever happened."" 小题1:Why did Brenda try to play in the strangest places?A.Because she didn"t want others to hear her play | B.Because she didn"t mean to disturb others. | C.Because she didn"t have her own room | D.Because she didn’t like her neighbors. | 小题2:Brenda started to give concerts _______.A.after she practiced in her space bubble | B.when she became part of the unique space journey | C.after she became a real musical astronaut | D.when people came to see her in the space bubble | 小题3:Brenda became famous because _______.A.she was good at music and science | B.she became a real musical astronaut | C.she invented a special way of practice | D.she played well and had a talent | 小题4:It can be inferred from the text that: " _______".A.He laughs best who laughs last | B.It"s never too old to learn | C.Two heads are better than one | D.One good turn deserves another |

It was the last day of July and the long hot summer was drawing to a close As for me.1 was out of spirits, and,if the truth must be told, out of money as well,During the past year I had not managed my finances as carefully as usual;and 1 was now limited to spending the autumn economically between my mother’s cottage at Hampstead and my own in town. My father had been dead for some years, and my sister and 1 were the sole survivors of a family of five children. My father was a drawing-master before me He had been highly successful in his profession and my mother and sister were left economically independent after his death. The view of London below me had sunk into the black shadow of the cloudy night, when I stood before the gate of my mother’s cottage I had hardly rung the bell. When the house door was opened violently. My worthy Italian friend,Professor Pesca, appeared in the servant’s place, and rushed out joyously to receive me. I had first become acquainted(熟悉)with my Italian friend at certain great houses, where he taught Italian and I taught drawing What I then knew of the history of his life was that he had left Italy for political reasons and that he had been respectably established for many years in London as a teacher of languages It once happened that I saved him from certain death by drowning while we were swimming in the sea at Brighton Afterwards he overwhelmed(淹没)me with the wildest expressions of affection and exclaimed passionately, that he would hold his life at my disposal from then on, and declared that he should never be happy again until he had had the opportunity of proving his gratitude.Little did I think that the occasion to serve me was soon to come. Pesca dragged me in by both hands into the parlor, where my mother sat by the open window, laughing and fanning herself.Pesca was one of her especial favorites, and his wildest strange acts were always pardonable in her eyes. “Now, my good dears.”began Pesca.“listen to me The time has come I recite my good news.I speak at last…"Hear, hear!”said my mother, humoring the joke“I go back into my life, and I address myself to the noblest of men,who found me dead at the bottom of the sea,and who pulled me up to the top. What did I say when l got into my own life and my own clothes again? I said that my life belonged to my dear friend,Walter, for the rest of my days Now,”cried the enthusiastic little mall at the top of his voice.“happiness bursts out of me at every pore of my skin. For I have found a job for you” 小题1:The first two paragraphs of the passage serve as an introduction to——A.the financial situation the writer then faced | B.the season that the story was set in | C.the family members of the writer | D.the successful profession of the writer’s father | 小题2:The underlined word‘‘sole’’in the second paragraph probably means‘‘ ”A.main | B.only | C.lucky | D.possible | 小题3:It can be learned from the passage that Pesca A.used to be a politician | B.was a successful drawing-master | C.was quite close to the mother | D.wanted to give the writer some money in return | 小题4:According to the last paragraph,Pesca was more than happy because A.he went back into his life | B.he met his dear friend again | C.his friend ever saved his life | D.he had done something good for his friend |

When I was fifteen, I announced to my English class that I was going to write my own books. Half the students smiled , and even worse, the rest nearly fell out of their chairs laughing. “Don’t be . Only geniuses can become writers.” the English teacher said, “And you are getting a D this term.” I was so that I burst into tears. That night I wrote a short poem about broken dreams and mailed it to the newspaper. To my , they published it and sent me two dollars. I was a published and paid writer. I showed my teacher and fellow students. They laughed, “Just plain dumb luck,” the teacher said. I tasted ; I’d sold the first thing I’d ever written. That was more than any of them had done and if it was just dumb luck, that was fine with me. During the next two years, I sold dozens of poems and letters. By the time I graduated from high school, I had scrapbooks (剪贴簿) with my published works. I never my writing to my teachers, friends or my family again because they were dream . I had four children at the time. While the children slept, I typed on my ancient typewriter. I wrote what I felt. It took nine months. I chose a and mailed it. A month later I received a contract, an advance on payments, and a request to start another book. Crying Wind, which became a best seller, was translated into fifteen languages and sold worldwide. My first book also became required in native American schools in Canada. In the year I ever had as a writer I earned two dollars. In my best year I earned 36,000 dollars. People ask what college I , what degrees I have and what qualifications I have to be a writer. The answer is: “None.” I just write. I’m not a genius. I use an electric typewriter that I paid a hundred and twenty nine dollars for six years ago. I do all the housework and fit my writing in a few minutes here and there. I’ve written eight books. To all those who dream of writing, I’m shouting at you: “Yes, you can. Don’t listen to them.” I don’t write right but I’ve succeeded. Writing is ; it’s fun and anyone can do it. Of course, a little dumb luck doesn’t hurt.
