“Cleverness is a gift while kindness is a choice. Gifts are easy – they’re given after all. Choices can be hard.” –– Jeff Bezos. I got the idea to start Amazon 16 years ago. I came across the fact that the Internet usage was growing at 2,300 percent per year. I’d never seen or heard of anything that grew that fast, and the idea of building an online bookstore with millions of titles was very exciting to me. I had just turned 30 years old, and I’d been married for a year. I told my wife MacKenzie that I wanted to quit my job and go to do this crazy thing that probably wouldn’t work since most start-ups don’t, and I wasn’t sure what to expect. MacKenzie told me I should go for it. As a young boy, I’d been a garage inventor. I’d always wanted to be an inventor, and she wanted me to follow my passion. I was working at a financial firm in New York City with a bunch of very smart people, and I had a brilliant boss that I much admired. I went to my boss and told him I wanted to start a company selling books on the Internet. He took me on a long walk in Central Park, listened carefully to me, and finally said, “That sounds like a really good idea, but it would be an even better idea for someone who didn’t already have a good job.” That logic made some sense to me, and he convinced me to think about it for 48 hours before making a final decision. Seen in that light, it really was a difficult choice, but ultimately (最后), I decided I had to give it a shot. I didn’t think I’d regret trying and failing. And I suspected I would always be haunted by a decision to not try at all. After much consideration, I took the less safe path to follow my passion, and I’m proud of that choice. For all of us, in the end, we are our choices. 小题1:What inspired the author with the idea of building an online bookstore?A.His dream of being an inventor. | B.The support of his wife. | C.The greatly increasing usage of the Internet. | D.Millions of exciting titles. | 小题2:Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined sentence?A.The idea of not trying would keep coming to his mind and disturb him. | B.He would be very excited if he tried it out. | C.He would be always having a doubt if he didn’t try. | D.The decision to not try the online bookstore would terrify him. | 小题3:We can know from the passage that _______.A.the boss thought the idea was suitable for the author | B.the author wanted someone else to try the idea | C.the author might not regret if he failed the idea | D.the author might go back to his boss if he failed | 小题4:Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?A.Cleverness and Kindness | B.The Starting of Amazon | C.Following My Passion | D.We Are What We Choose |

There are two things I can count on my dad asking every time he calls me: “Is there anything I can do for you?” and “How’s the car?” I guess he asks what he can do for me because his dad (an air force officer) was never really there for him, and he’s determined to provide me with the support he lacked. During my youth he never missed a school play or softball game. In fact, he was so supportive that I sometimes longed for one of those dads who dressed better and cared less. But my dad would forever be the guy wearing shorts with dress shoes and black socks, cheering me on, expecting greatness. His other standard question—How’s the car? -- used to strike me as a waste of long-distance dollars from a man who once suggested making a list of what you want to talk about before calling someone out of state. What I now realize is that “How’s the car?” is not about the car. It’s a father’s way of asking his adult daughter how she is doing. The advantage is that if there’s something wrong with the car, he knows what to do about it and how much it will cost, whereas if you’re having problems about marriage or doubting a career choice, he might have to act Mom on the line. At age thirty I finally took the plunge(跳进) into adulthood by renting a car without my dad’s help or advice. I’m sure my dad was hurt rather than proud. Though a daughter’s independence is evidence of a job well done, it still implies the job’s done, and many fathers are unwilling to retire. Even when my dad was overworked, he’d happily jump on a plane if I said I needed help. His frequent question “Is there anything I can do for you?” underlines the fact that he wishes there was still something he could provide. It’s interesting: Even though we’re tied by blood and I love him no matter what, he still seems to need a concrete function -- suggesting stocks, finding the cheapest plane fare -- to feel he has a role in my life. 小题1:In the author’s opinion, her father always attended her school plays or softball games to_____.A.satisfy any demand she made to him | B.show his interest and watch them for fun | C.make up what he was previously short of | D.expect his daughter would be great in games | 小题2:The author has learned that by asking “How is the car?”, her father is actually_____.A.reminding her not to waste money | B.asking how his daughter is getting along | C.expressing his concern for her daughter’s safety | D.asking his daughter if the car breaks down or not | 小题3:According to the author, her father, like many other fathers, is unwilling to retire probably because_____.A.he wants to continue to earn money | B.he is doubtful of children’s independence | C.he won’t put an end to caring for his children | D.he is afraid of losing connection with children | 小题4:We can safely draw a conclusion from the story that in the author’s eye her father_____.A.has a strong passion for his work | B.has the deepest love for his children | C.has great interest in his daughter’s car | D.has too much control over his children |

Dear Dad, Today I was at the shopping mall and I spent a lot of time reading the Father"s Day cards. They all had a special message that in some way or another reflected how I feel about you. Yet as I selected and read, it occurred to me that not a single card said what I really want to say to you. You"ll soon be 84 years old, Dad, and you and I will have had 55 Father"s Days together. I haven"t always been with you on Father"s Day but I"ve always been with you in my heart. You know, Dad, there was a time when we were separated by the generation gap. You stood on one side of the Great Divide and I on the other. The Father-Daughter Duel shifted into high gear ( 档位) when you taught me to drive the old Dodge and I decided I would drive the "54 Chevy whether you liked it or not. The police officer who sent me home, after you reported the Chevy stolen, didn"t have much tolerance for a stubborn 16 year old, while you were so tolerant about it, Dad, and I think that was probably what made it the worst night of my life. Our relationship greatly improved when I married a man you liked, and things really turned around when we began making babies right and left. Somewhere along the line, the generation gap disappeared. I suppose I saw us and our relationship as aging together, rather like a fine wine. But the strangest thing happened last week. I was at a stop sign and I watched as you turned the corner in your car. It didn"t immediately occur to me that it was you because the man driving looked so elderly and fragile behind the wheel of that huge car. It was rather like a slap in the face delivered from out of nowhere. Perhaps I saw your age for the first time that day. I guess what I"m trying to say, Dad, is what every son and daughter wants to say to their Dad today. Honoring a father on Father"s Day is about respect and sharing and acceptance and tolerance and giving and taking. It"s about loving someone more than words can say, and it"s wishing that never had to end. I love you, Dad. Love, Jenny 小题1:How did Jenny probably feel on the night she was sent home by the police? A.Disappointed. | B.Nervous. | C.Guilty. | D.Frightened. | 小题2:We can learn from the passage that Jenny and her father_________.A.kept in touch by writing each other | B.are separated due to the generation gap | C.have been getting along very well | D.had a hard time understanding each other | 小题3:Why did Jenny feel strange when she saw her father last week?.A.She seldom saw him driving that huge car. | B.She had never realized his being old and weak. | C.She didn"t expect to meet with him there. | D.She had never seen him driving so slowly before. | 小题4:Jenny wrote his father this letter to _________A.tell him about their conflicts | B.say sorry for her being stubborn | C.express her gratitude to him | D.remind him of the early incident |

Joshua, my son, is fifteen years old. He was born with Down Syndrome (唐氏综合症). In the last fifteen years. I have experienced many difficult and stories. However, right now I want to just stick to the topic of . When Joshua was born, the doctor us not to “waste our time, energy or money". They claimed that our son would never accomplish anything. They told us he would never walk, talk or learn to use the toilet. , we were not about to accept the words. However, we weren’t really sure what to expect. Therefore, we expected him to develop at his own pace, with a lot of help and encouragement, but only to develop little. We decided that we saw progress we could never give up. Very early on, we knew in our hearts that we had to have high expectations, but how high? We could not set goals for him that he could not ever possibly reach. , if we did not have high hopes, the chances would be very slim for him to work to his potential. When Joshua was four and a half years old, his younger sister, CJ, was three and attended the same preschool in a younger class. The school an art contest and all the children in it presented pictures. The pictures were hung on the wall and the president of the local church, who was not personally with the children, was appointed to be the . On the day of the contest, I made my through the crowded parents to see Cf’s picture, it was likely to be hung there, but Joshua"s class pictures were not yet up and I didn’t think twice about seeing his picture leaving the building. You see, I had no expectation that Joshua would win; it was for me to know that he was able to draw a picture and have it with those of the other children. Well, when I returned to the kids, you can image my when I discovered that Joshua was the winner from his class! Proud and excited, he told everyone, “I won the contest! I it! ” CJ kept insisting that she had won too and it was certainly a feeling to know that Joshua had achieved something that his sister had not. After that I decided to keep my expectations . It seems that most people work to whatever expectations are set for them. Why should Joshua be any ?
