One of my. next-door neighbor is a sweet 92-year-old Polish lady. A few days ago, I came back from a trip. As I was 16 . my clothes in my room, I heard a(n) 17 , frantic(发疯的) knock on the door. It was 10:30 pm, and I wasn’t sure who it could be. I went downstairs and 18 the peephole, and saw that it was our sweet next-door neighbor. I quickly 19 the door, and she seemed really distressed and kept 20 , Please help me. I need your help. The fire alarm won’t go off. Please help me.” I 21 told her that everything would be okay, and 22 her to her house to see what was going on 23 the fire alarm. She 24 that the alarm had been going on and off inconsistently(反复无常的) for the past two hours, and that her 25 to call her daughter to come and fix it was fruitless. So I took a chair from her dining room table, 26 it, and looked at the tire alarm. After twisting the fire alarm off, I blew into it, because sometimes 27 causes it to make strange noises. She seemed 28 but was literally shaking out of fear. I asked her 29 she was okay, and she said she was 30 , so I gave her a hug. I felt her shaking in my embrace, and held her 31 for a few minutes until she stopped shaking and sighed a breath of relief. We then 32 and talked for ten minutes, until I felt that she was okay. and safe to sleep. She was so generous with 33 for being with her, but I thanked her for 34 me that hugs are indeed good tools! So, sometimes, a(n) 35 hug is a good and powerful way to hold someone going through a difficult period.

举一反三
Growing up, I remember my father as a silent, serious man not the sort of person around whom one could laugh. As a teenager arriving in America, knowing nothing, I wanted a father who could explain the human journey. In college, when friends called home for advice, 1 would sink into deep depression for what I did not have. Today. at twenty-seven, I have come to rediscover them in ways that my teenage mind would not allow — as adults and as friends with their own faults and weaknesses. One night after my move back home, I overheard my father on the telephone. There was some trouble. Later, Dad shared the problem with me. Apparently my legal training had earned me some privileges in his eyes. I talked through the problem with Dad. analyzing the purposes of the people involved and offering several negotiation strategies. He listened patiently before finally admitting, “I can’t think like that. I am a simple man.” Dad is a brilliant scientist who can deconstruct (解构) the building blocks of nature. Yet human nature is a mystery to him. That night I realized that he was simply not skilled at dealing with people, much less the trouble of a conflicted teenager. It’s not in his nature to understand human desires. And so, there it was — it was no one’s fault that my father held no interest in human lives while 1 placed great importance in them. We are at times born more sensitive, wide-eyed, and dreamy than our parents and become more curious and idealistic than them. Dad perhaps never expected me for a child. And I, who knew Dad as an intelligent man, had never understood that his intelligence did not cover all of my feelings. It has saved me years of questioning and confusion. I now see my parents as people who have other relationships than just Father and Mother. I now overlook their many faults and weaknesses, which once annoyed me. I now know my parents as friends: people who ask me for advice; people who need my support and understanding. And I’ve come to see my past clearly. 小题1:What was the author’s impression of her father when she was a teenager?A.Friendly but irresponsible. | B.Intelligent but severe. | C.Cold and aggressive. | D.Caring and communicative. | 小题2:Why did the author feel depressed when her friends called home?A.She did not have a phone to a1l home. | B.Her father did not care about her human journey. | C.Her father was too busy to answer her phone. | D.Her father couldn’t give her appropriate advice. | 小题3:After the author overheard her father on the telephone.A.he blamed her for impoliteness | B.he rediscovered human nature | C.he consulted with her about his problem | D.he changed his attitude towards the author | 小题4:The author realized that ______.A.her father had too many faults and weaknesses | B.her father was not as intelligent as she had thought | C.her father was not good at interpersonal relationships | D.her father placed too much importance in social activities | 小题5:Which of the following is the best title of this passage?A.My Parents as Friends | B.My Parents as Advisors | C.My Father — a Serious Man | D.My Father — an Intelligent Scientist |

My l4-year-old son, John, and I spotted the coat at the same time in a second-hand clothing store. It stood out among big and old coats. It had beautiful tailoring and an unbelievable price: $28. I looked at my son and we both said nothing, but John’s eyes shone. Dark, woolen topcoats were popular with teenage boys, but they could cost several hundred dollars new. This coat was even better. John tried it on and turned from side to side, eyeing himself in the mirror. The fit was perfect. John wore the coat to school the next day and came home with a big grin. “Did the kids like your coat?” I asked. “They loved it,” he said. Over the next few weeks, John changed. He was polite, less argumentative, more thoughtful, and on the whole much happier. “Good dinner, mom,” he would say every evening. Without a word of objection he would carry in wood for the stove. One day when I suggested that he might start on his homework before dinner, John, who always put things off, said: “You’re right. I guess I will.” When I mentioned this incident to one of his teachers, she joked that the coat must have changed him. John and I both know we should never mistake a person’s clothes for the real person within them. But there is something to be said for wearing a standard of excellence for the world to see, for practicing standards of excellence in thought, speech, and behavior, and for matching what is on the inside to what is on the outside. 小题1:What does the author try to express in the first paragraph?A.The coat looked like a magical coat. | B.They were good at shopping. | C.The coat was a real bargain. | D.They had the same taste in clothes. | 小题2:What does the underlined word “grin” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?A.A wide smile. | B.A worried look. | C.A jealous spirit. | D.A joking tone. | 小题3:After John wore the new coat, the author found he _______. a. was happier and better-behaved b. received more praise from his teachers c. was willing to follow suggestions d. made rapid progress in study e. would say sweet words to please herA.a, b, c | B.a, c, e | C.b, d, e | D.c, d, e | 小题4:What message does the author intend to deliver in the article?A.We should not judge people by their appearance. | B.Life is full of possibilities when we are young. | C.It’s beneficial to try different things in our lives. | D.What we wear could help shape who we are inside. |
