After graduation I returned home to my small town in Indiana. I didn’t have a job yet. Mr. Hobbs, a friend of my father’s, owned a small shirt factory in town. Within the past five years it had grown from twenty to eighty workers. Mr. Hobbs was worried that his plant was getting too big and inefficient, so he asked me to come in on a short-term basis as a consultant. I went to the plant and spent about a week looking around and making notes. I was really a mazed at what I saw. Most curious of all, there was no quality control at all. No one inspected the final product of the factory. As a result some of the shirts that were put in boxes for shipment were missing one or two buttons, the collar, and even a sleeve sometimes! The working conditions were poor. The tables where the workers sat were very high and uncomfortable. Except for a half hour at lunchtime, there were no breaks in the day to relieve the boring work. There was no music. The walls of the workrooms were a dull gray color. I was amazed that the workers hadn’t gone on strike. Furthermore, the work flow was irregular. There was one especially absent-minded young man in the assembly(组装)line who sewed on buttons. After a while I recognized him as "Big Jim", who used to sit behind me in math class in high school. He was very slow and all the shifts were held up at his position. Workers beyond him in line on his shift had to wait with nothing to do; therefore, a great deal of time and efficiency were lost as Big Jim daydreamed while he worked. All week I wondered why he wasn’t fired. After I made observations for a week, Mr. Hobbs asked me for an oral report of my findings. 小题1:The shirts from Mr. Hobbs’ factory can be described as ____.A.of low quality | B.of high quality | C.fashionable | D.unfashionable | 小题2:Why did Mr. Hobbs ask the writer to the factory?A.The factory was too big. | B.The factory was not producing fast enough. | C.The factory was not big enough. | D.The writer was a college graduate. | 小题3:Which is not likely to happen in the factory?A.The workers will have more rest in the day. | B.Someone will examine the final product. | C.New machines will be bought. | D.The factory will be repainted. | 小题4:Big Jim may get fired mainly because ____.A.he was slow | B.he wasted much time | C.he was absent-minded | D.the work flow was irregular |

Having lived in the house for so long, we found our kitchen looked old. We decided it was time to 1 the kitchen, and my husband and I were discussing 2 colors. The children, sitting nearby, suddenly all spoke together: “Not the measuring stick.” “No,” I 3 them. “Not the measuring stick..” The measuring stick isn’t a (an) 4 stick but the kitchen side of the door between our kitchen and dining room. Along the edge we’ve 5 each child’s growth by making a mark showing his or her 6 on every birthday. Over the years so many colored pens, pencils and markers have been used, that now, this white door is somewhat like an abstract painting. Names and dates show different 7 , and I can tell by the script(手迹) who measured whom. An eight-year-old measured her three-year-old sister, a grandchild measured her grandmother, my husband measured me. At the parties, when this door 8 back and forth frequently, friends stop to 9 the names and dates. When we ask if they would like to be always remembered, they usually smile 10 and go back right up into place, 11 to be measured. Many of those listed on the door are still 12 ; some have stopped. Some remain with us only in 13 . When my mother came to see my eldest daughter graduate from university, we measured her too. It was her last visit to our home. We haven’t 14 the new kitchen color plan yet, but one thing is certain: whatever color we choose, the back of the kitchen door will always remain 15 , with lots of names and dates in various colors.

When I wandered along a path through woods in the countryside, a small water pool came into my sight ahead. I changed my direction and took the part of the path that wasn’t covered by water or mud to go around it. When I reached the pool, I was suddenly attacked by something several times! It was from somewhere totally unexpected. I was surprised as well as unhurt. The attacker stopped attacking me when I backed up a foot. I couldn’t help laughing when I looked down and found I was being attacked by a butterfly! Curiously, I took a step forward to see clearly. My attacker dashed towards me again. He rushed towards me at full speed, attempting to hurt me but failed. For a second time, I took a stop backwards when the attacker paused. I didn’t know what to do. After all, it’s just uncommon that one is attacked by a butterfly. I stepped back to look the situation over. My attacker moved back to land on the ground. That’s when I discovered why the attacker was kept charging me. He had a mate and she was dying. Sitting tenderly close beside her, he opened and closed his wings as if to fan her. I could do nothing but admire the love and courage of that butterfly in his concern for his mate. He had attacked me for his mate’s sake, even though she was clearly dying and I was much larger than he. He did so just to give her those extra few precious moments of life. I shouldn’t have been careless enough to step on her. His courage in attacking something thousands of times larger and heavier than himself just for his mates’ safety seemed admirable. I was moved and rewarded him by walking on the more difficult side of the pool, leaving them undisturbed. He had truly earned those moments to be with his dear mate. Since then, I’ve always tried to remember the courage of that butterfly whenever I see huge barriers facing me. 小题1:Why did the writer change his direction while walking down a path?A.To get close to a butterfly. | B.To avoid getting his shoes dirty. | C.To escape a sudden attack. | D.To look over the bad situation. | 小题2:What made the man feel funny?A.Making the attacker pause. | B.Being stepped on by his mate. | C.Being attacked by a butterfly. | D.Discovering the energetic butterfly. | 小题3:From this experience the man learned _____.A.people should protect butterflies | B.how he should deal with attacks | C.people should show sympathy to the weak | D.what he should do when faced with trouble | 小题4:Which of the following word can best describe the butterfly?A.Brave | B.Amusing. | C.Careless. | D.Strong. |

One day a mime(哑剧演员) is visiting the zoo and wants to make some money as a street performer. As soon as he starts to draw a crowd, a zookeeper drags him into his office. The zookeeper explains that the zoo’s most popular attraction, a gorilla(大猩猩), has died suddenly and the keeper fears that attendance at the zoo will fall off. He offers the mime a job to dress up as the gorilla. The mime accepts. The next morning the mime puts on the gorilla suit and enters the cage before the crowd comes. He soon discovers he can sleep all as he likes, play and make fun of the people and he draws bigger crowds than he ever did as a mime — the job he likes but loses. However, with days going by, he begins to notice that the people are paying more attention to the lion in the cage next to his. The scene is afuel to the crowd. At the end of the day he is given a pay raise for being such a good attraction. Well, this continues for some time. The crowds grow larger, and the mime’s pay keeps going up. Then one day when he is dangling over the lion he slips and falls. The mime is terrified(吓坏). He starts screaming, “Help me!”, but the lion is quick. The mime soon finds himself flat on his back looking up at the angry lion and the lion says, “Shut up you fool! HOLLYWOOD(UPI)—Loni Anderson decided last year it was time to change her career around to play moms and comedy instead of pretty young girls.
So far, most people remember her as Jennifer Marlowe, the role she played in her first film in 1982. This summer people will see Anderson in A Night as Roxbury, a film produced and directed by Amy Heckerlin. “In the film I have two sons. One is 26, and the other is 30. Isn’t that interesting? I know I don’t look that old, but that’s what’s so fun about it.” “My character dresses in clothes too short, too tight. Dan Hedaya plays my husband. We’re a couple with a lot of money and no taste. Our sons are complete idiots(白痴). Their purpose in life is to get into the Rich Young Man Club where everybody is proud of his wealth.” “As you can tell, I’m doing things I’d never have done at the beginning of my career.” “But I am who I am. I’ve worked as an actress a long time and now I can be anything I want. It’s a great time for me. I don’t have anything to prove.” “I hadn’t done comedy in a long time. It’s what I do best and what I like best. At this point in my life I want to look a little bit foolish. I think that would be something new for me.” 小题1:What had Loni Anderson probably played most in her past film career?A.Pretty young girls. | B.Old mothers. | C.Foolish persons. | D.Rich women. | 小题2:When did she begin to be an actress?A.Last year. | B.This year. | C.1972. | D.1982. | 小题3:What was she going to change?A.Her clothes. | B.Her husband. | C.Her role type. | D.Her living place. | 小题4:Where does this article most likely appear?A.Newspaper. | B.Science magazine. | C.Tourist guide book. | D.Historical record. |
