阅读下面短文,从短文后所给各题的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出能填入相应空白处的最佳选项。 It was 4 o’clock in the morning, when I received the phone call. “This is the emergency room calling and your son was just 1 in with severe burns on his face, neck and arms. We’ve called for a (n) 2 and are going to fly him to the burn unit in Seattle.” Seattle was 350 miles from his college, so we knew immediately this was 3 . The doctor described the accident, which caused the burns. At 6 am, our son and his friends decided to barbecue hamburgers. When they 4 the charcoal (木炭), it burst into flames because they had sprayed (喷洒) too much gasoline (petrol). The flames 5 my son’s shirt tail and shot from his waist to his head. 6 , one of the boys was quick-minded, grasped my son, and rolled him on the grass. While it saved his life, it was not in 7 to save him from severe burns and the terrible scars (伤疤). So, he had to return to college with scars. When I was a child, my mother told my sister, who had a 10-inch, very 8 scar on her arm. “Ann, if you ignore the scar, other people will ignore it. It doesn’t mean they won’t 9 it, but it means it will not matter to them if it doesn’t matter to you.” I 10 this wisdom (智慧) on to my son. He took my advice to 11 and returned to school with his head held high — glad he was alive. By the end of the six-month waiting period, he decided that the scars did not matter, so he made the 12 to give up any plastic surgery (外科手术). We all have “scars” that 13 people to keep away from us. And we spend a lot of time thinking that if only we looked differently, or dressed differently, people would like us better. But you see, people will only judge you by your looks, or your clothes, if you are judging yourself by these same 14 standards(标准). Put your imperfections out of your 15 and concentrate (集中) on what you value within yourself, and your beauty will shine through.

Crossing Texas and Mexico, the Big Bend region is high in biodiversity(生物的多样性). It’s a place so untamed that if something doesn’t bite, stick, or sting, it’s probably a rock. You know you have arrived in the heart of the Chihuahuan Desert when it feels as if you have fallen off the edge of the earth and into the rabbit hole. Nothing is as it appears. Moths (蛀虫) are the size of birds. Are those twin pillars (柱) of black rock (a landmark known as Mule Ear Peaks) ten miles (16 kilometers) away or fifty (80 kilometers)? Visibility (能见度) reaches more than a hundred miles on a clear day, and since there are few roads or buildings to use as milestones, distance is difficult to judge. This is a place where water runs uphill, where rainbows have to wait for rain. The line between myth (虚构的故事) and reality is unclear. Stare long enough at the Chisos Mountains or the Sierra del Carmen, the two mountain ranges, known as sky islands, which lie on the land, and they rise and float above the plain. The vast Chihuahuan Desert is a land of no people. There is always the chance you’ll die of thirst. The “You Can Die”possibilities are endless, and keep some visitors — 350,000 a year to Big Bend National Park, built in 1944 — from coming back. Those who do return are left to think of the remarkable courage of the brave few who have managed to survive in this terrible environment. 小题1:The underlined word“untamed”in Paragraph 1 means“________”.A.untouched | B.wild | C.unchanged | D.fresh | 小题2:Why do the twin pillars of black rock seem ten or fifty miles away?A.They were put so far away. | B.They lie across the Chihuahuan Desert. | C.It is difficult to judge the distance, with few milestones. | D.One lies in the Chisos Mountains, the other in the Sierra del Carmen. | 小题3:How many years are there since the Big Bend National Park was built?A.350,000 years. | B.350 years. | C.66 years. | D.44 years. | 小题4:What is the passage mainly about?A.The natural wonders of the Chihuahuan Desert. | B.Everything you see is not what it seems in the Chihuahuan Desert. | C.The terrible environment of deserts in Texas and Mexico. | D.A special place where none who go can return. | 小题5:What can we learn from the last paragraph?A.There are all kinds of living things in the Chihuahuan Desert. | B.No people live in the Big Bend region. | C.Nothing is as it appears in the Big Bend region. | D.Traveling in the Big Bend region is dangerous. |

Tick, tock, tick, tock. I’m sitting here, watching the movements of my existence pass slowly away. My house has been 36 for such a long time, and I’m lonely and forgotten. When Danny went off to college,my heart broke. Soon afterward, 45 sold the house.… New owners came and 46 . Then, One day it so happened that I was in when a new family was moving into the house. You can’t even imagine my 47 when, unexpectedly, Danny walked through the front door. He had a 48 and kids now. I was so overjoyed when I saw him that I put all my 49 into my daily activities. ... I spent the next twenty years watching his kids grow up, with a mixture of pride and 50 about what would happen next. The kids finally became 51 and Danny sold the house. That was about five years ago…. Some of the local kids have started the rumor that the house is haunted(闹鬼的)--- and, in a way, it is. It is haunted by 52 of all the people who have lived in it. Every second has 53 me so much. I have been 54 them all day and they are almost up for me.... I hope that someday somebody will 55 me, and drop in on me again. Maybe then I’ll get a new home and an opportunity for a whole new set of memories.

Charles Plumb was a US Navy jet fighter pilot in Viet Nam. After 75 missions, his plane was destroyed by a surface-to-air missile. Plumb parachuted down into enemy hands. He was captured and spent 6 years in a communist Vietnamese prison. One day, Plumb and his wife were sitting in a restaurant when a man from another table came up and said “You’re Plumb! You flew jet fighters in Viet Nam from the aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk. You were shot down!” “How in the world did you know that?” asked Plumb. “I packed your parachute,” the man replied. “I guess it worked”. Plumb assured him, “It sure did. If your chute(降落伞) hadn’t worked, I wouldn’t be here today.” Plumb couldn’t sleep that night, thinking about that man. Plumb says, “I kept wondering what he looked like in a Navy uniform: a white hat, a bib in the back, and bell-bottom trousers. I wonder how many times I might have seen him and not even said ‘Good morning. How are you?’ or anything because, you see, I was a fighter pilot and he was ‘just a sailor’”. Plumb thought of the many hours the sailor had spent at a long wooden table in the bowels of the ship, carefully weaving the shrouds(伞罩) and folding the silks of each chute, holding in his hands each time the fate of someone he didn’t know. Sometimes in the daily challenges that life gives us, we miss what is really important. We may fail to say hello, please, thank you, congratulate someone on something wonderful that has happened to them, give a compliment, or just do something nice for no reason. As you go through this week, this month, this year, recognize people who pack your parachutes. 小题1:Why didn’t Plumb say hello to the sailor each time he passed him on the Kitty Hawk?A.He thought the sailor was just an unimportant man. | B.He didn’t like him at that time. | C.He was very busy then. | D.He didn’t know him well then. | 小题2: What did the sailor do on the Kitty Hawk at the Viet Nam War?A.weaved clothes for the pilots. | B.repaired the wooden table in the ship. | C.helped the jets start. | D.packed the parachutes for the fighter pilots. | 小题3: What does the writer think we should do?A.We should help each other if they are in trouble. | B.We shouldn’t look down upon the sailors. | C.We should be thankful to others’ help. | D.We should be honest to our friends. | 小题4: Which is the best title for the passage?A.A story about a sailor. | B.Who pack your parachutes? | C.Don’t forget your past! | D.Never forget your friends! |
