I grew up in a small town. My father raised chickens and ran a construction company. I was barely
10 years old when my dad gave me the responsibility (责任) of feeding the chickens and cleaning up the
stable. He believed it was important for me to have those jobs to learn responsibility. Then, when I was
22, I found a job in Natchbill at a country music club called the Natchbill Palace, I washed dishes and
cooked from 4: 00 pm to 9: 00 pm and then went on stage and sang until 2:00 in the morning. It wasn"t
long before I became known as a singing cook. I had been rejected so many times by record companies
that it was hard not to be discouraged. One night, a woman executive (懂事) from a company named
Warner Brothers Records came to hear me sing. When the show was over, we sat down and talked
and after she left, I said to myself it was one more rejection. A few weeks later, my manager received
a phone call - Warner Brothers wanted to sign me to a record deal. Soon after, I released my first record
in June 1986. It sold over 2 million copies. My best efforts had gone into every job I"ve ever held. It was
the sense of responsibility that made me feel like a man. Knowing that I had done my best filled me with
pride. I still feel that way today, even though I have become a well-known singer.

1. Why was the writer once known as the singing cook?
A. Because he was a cook at a country-music club.
B. Because he sang for guests while he worked as a cook.
C. Because he often sang while cooking.
D. Because he liked singing better than cooking.
 2. Who first recognized his talents and helped make his career successful?
A. Wamer Brothers.
B. His manager.
C. His father.
D. A businesswoman.
3. What made the writer proud of himself?
A. His ability to live independently.
B. His sense of responsibility in whatever he did.
C. His courage in the face of rejections.
D. His hard work in his early days.

He"s an old cobbler (修鞋匠) with a shop in the Marais, a historic area in Paris. When I took him my
shoes, he at first told me: "I haven"t time. Take them to the other fellow on the main street; he"ll fix them
for you right away. "
But I"d had my eye on his shop for a long time. Just looking at his bench loaded with tools and pieces
of leather, I knew he was a skilled craftsman (手艺人). "No," I replied, "The other fellow can"t do it well."
"The other fellow" was one of those shopkeepers who fix shoes and make keys "while-U-wait" -without
knowing much about mending shoes or making keys. They work carelessly, and when they have finished
sewing back a sandal strap (鞋带) ,you might as well just throw away the pair.
My man saw I wouldn"t give in, and he smiled. He wiped his hands on his blue apron (围裙), looked
at my shoes, had me write my name on one shoe with a piece of chalk and said, "Come back in a week."
I was about to leave when he took a pair of soft leather boot off a shelf.
"See what I can do " he said with pride. "Only three of us in Paris can do this kind of work."
When I got back out into the street, the world seemed brand-new to me. He was something out of an
ancient legend,
an old craftsman with his way of speaking familiarly, his pride in his craft.
These are times when nothing is important but the bottom line, when you can do things any old way as
long as it "pays", when, in short, people look on work as a path to ever-increasing consumption (消费)
rather than a way to realize their own abilities. In such a period,it is a rare comfort to find a cobbler who
gets his greatest satisfaction from pride in a job well done.
1. Which of the following is true about the old cobbler?
A. He was equipped with the best repairing tools.
B. He was the only cobbler in the Marais.
C. He was proud of his skills.
D. He was a native Parisian.
2. The sentence "He was something out of an ancient legend." ( paragraph 7 ) implies that _____.
A. nowadays you can hardly find anyone like him
B.it was difficult to communicate with this man
C. the man was very strange
D. the man was too old
3. According to the author, many people work just to_____ .
A. realize their abilities
B. gain happiness
C. make money
D. gain respect
4. This story wants to tell us that_____ .
A. craftsmen make a lot of money
B. whatever you do, do it well
C. craftsmen need self-respect
D. people are born equal

A few years ago, when I was still in high school, I met a wonderful and warm teacher. At that time
in my life, there were many changes to adjust to, apart from the usual teenage troubles. My parents had
divorced, so my elder brother and I had chosen to stay with my dad. Due to the fact that he was keeping
the house, we didn"t have to move.
During this time, my teacher took a special interest in me. Being my English teacher, she encouraged
my mind to travel to creativity I had long given up. She brought me out of the shell I built.
She became my mother, my older sister, my friend and my teacher. The one thing she couldn"t do though
was to make me more girly as growing up with only my dad and brother made me a real tomboy.
Sometimes, I would be really immature(不成熟的), especially if she was scoring me less than others on
purpose. She knew I could do better than what I was handing in and so pushed me to extend
further than limits.
When I finished school and then after college I was about to leave my hometowns she gifted me a
watch that every second, with my pulse, should remind me of the one person who will forever wait and
love me without reservation.
Time has passed and our friendship is distant, but in my heart, soul and mind, she is the closest I ever
got.

1. The writer and her elder brother chose to live with their father simply because _________.
A. their mother was expecting to have another baby
B.they didn"t have to move out of their house
C. they hated their mother remarried
D. they had a closer relationship with their father
2. How did the writer get along with her studies before she met her English teacher?
A. She was hopeless and had given up her studies.
B.She was getting along well with her studies.
C. She had some trouble with her studies.
D. She lacked interest in creativity.
3. The writer behaved herself like a boy because ________.
A. she needed the love of mother
B.she wanted to learn from her father and brother
C. she lived with only men all the time
D. her English teacher didn"t care about her
4. What was the writer"s attitude to the watch given by the teacher?
A. She considered it to be very useful.
B.She valued it very much.
C. She kept it very well.
D. She wanted to do something later in return for it.
