There was once a captain who loved money so much that he cheated his sailors at the end of every voyage and took their wages. On the last day of one voyage, the ship was in a small port. It was winter time, and the sea was very cold, so the captain said to his sailors, "If one of you stays in the water during the whole night, I will give him my ship. But if he comes out before the sun appears, I shall get his wages." The sailors had heard about the captain"s cheating, so they didn"t trust him. But then one of them, who thought that he was cleverer than the captain, said that he would do it. He got into the water, and, though it was very cold, he stayed in it. When it was nearly morning, some fishermen lit a fire on the shore about half a mile away. "You are cheating," the captain said to the sailor. "The fire"s warming you." "But it"s half a mile away!" said the sailor. "A fire"s fire," answered the captain. "I have won." The sailor came out of the water, and said, "Perhaps you think that you are clever because you have won my wages, but you can"t cook a chicken." "I can," answered the captain. "If you cook this chicken," said the sailor, "I shall work for you without wages for seven years, but if you can"t, you will give me your ship." The captain agreed, took the chicken and said, "Where"s the fire?" "There it is," answered the sailor. "On the shore." "But it"s half a mile away," said the captain angrily. Mr. and Mrs. Jones"s flat was full of suitcases, trunks (大衣箱) and packed-up furniture (家具). The two of them were busy with pencils and paper, checking their lists of luggage (行李), when there was a ring at the door. Mrs. Jones went to open it, and saw a well-dressed middle-aged lady outside. The lady came to welcome them to their new home. The Joneses invited her in, after apologizing for the state of the flat. "Oh, please don"t stand on ceremony (典礼)with me," she answered. After filling the car with gas, I continued driving to the airport. The roads were quite bumpy (颠簸) and I noticed that the highway department was doing some reconstruction, although some parts of the road hadn"t been completed yet. I drove on a completed part of the highway that was flat and smooth for one and a half hours. Afterwards, the road became a little rough and bumpy again, and there weren"t even any street lights on the side of the road. We started driving in the early hours of the morning and I think because it was really early and drivers on the road were tired so they couldn"t concentrate (集中注意力). I saw three separate car accidents during the journey. When starting driving in an area that I didn"t know well, I let the other car lead the way and I followed behind them. As we were driving inside a tunnel, I suddenly saw a truck hit the side of the wall, rebound (反 弹), then turned back onto the middle of the road. The truck nearly hit the car in front of us. I think the driver of the truck must have fallen asleep at the wheel otherwise this wouldn"t have happened. He nearly caused a car accident. I was driving behind the cars and I saw everything happen in front of me. The incident gave me such a fright that it immediately woke me up. In my mind I kept telling myself that I was driving a car and that I had to stay alert (清醒). To my relief, all the members in the other car were okay because if that truck really did hit the car traveling in front of us, I don"t think I"d be able to make it back to Hong Kong. Not only that, all the passengers in the other car would have to go to hospital. |
