D LONDON—Archaeologists have discovered a smaller prehistoric(史前) site near Britain’s famous circle of standing stones at Stonehenge. Researchers have named the site “Bluehenge” after the color of the 27 Welsh stones that were laid to make up a path. The stones have disappeared, but the path of holes remains. The new circle, unearthed over the summer by researchers from Sheffield University, represents an important find, researchers said Saturday. The site is about a mile away from Stonehenge. Bluehenge, about 80 miles southwest of London, is believed to date back to about the time Stonehenge was built, about 5,000 years ago. Mike Parker Pearson of Sheffield University said he believed the path and stonehenge itself were linked to rituals(仪式) of life and death. Mike Parker suggested that the ancient funerary rituals began at a different circle site known as “Wood-henge”, which represented the world of the living. The bodies of the dead were then brought down the River Avon to Bluehenge, which represented death, and were finally carried along a ceremonial route known as the Avenue to Stonehenge. Bournemouth University Professor Tim Darvill, an expert on Stonehenge, told Britain’s Dail Mail that Bluehenge “adds to the richness” of the ancient site’s story. “This henge is very important because it forms part of the picture of ceremonial monuments in the area and puts Stonehenge into context,” Darvill was quoted(引述) as saying. “It’s no longer Stonehenge standing alone, but it has to be seen in context with the landscape.” 53.How many henges are mentioned in this passage? A.Two B.Three C.Four D.Five 54.Who believed the Stonehenge is related to ancient ritual of death? A.Stonehenge has noting to do with Bluehenge B.Woodhenge represented the world of living in ancient times. C.Bluehenge represented death D.Stonehenge, Woodhenge and Bluehenge should be studied together 56.From the passage we can learn that ______. A.researchers have named the site “Bluehenge,” because they have found blue huge stones there B.funerary rituals were carried out along the path starting from Woodhenge, River Avon to Bluehenge, finally Stonehenge. C.Bluehenge is 1 mile away from London D.Bluehenge dates back to 2000 BC |

C Toronto---A pleasant attitude can do wonders for patients’recovery, according to researchers who reviewed 16 studies that looked at patients’ attitudes toward health. The studies lasted 30 years and looked at patients’ attitudes after operation. “In each case the better a patient’s expectations about how they would do after operation or some health procedure, the better they did,” said the author Donald Cole, of the Institute for Work and Health in Toronto. “This mind-body connection that we have been toying with for the past couple of decades really does have hard science behind it. The result shows that the power of positive thinking is real,” Cole said. New York-A Pable Picasso painting sold at Christie’s auction house in New York Wednesday for 55-million dollars. B WASHINGTON – It’s a great achievement that inspires notions of robots with consciousness and independent minds. When people or animals get hurt, they can usually compensate for minor injuries and keep limping along, but for robots, even slight damage can make them stumble and fall. However, a recently made robot has demonstrated a novel ability: it can heal its own damage. The new robot, which looks like a splay – legged, four – footed starfish can sense injury to itself and adapt. That ability sets the new robot apart from earlier machines. Because the robot can recover from unfamiliar places. “There is a need for planetary robotic rovers to be able to fix things on their own,” says Josh Bongard, a professor in the University of Vermont, who is one of the device’s creator. “Robots on other planets must be able to continue their mission without human help if they are damaged and cannot communicate their problem back to Earth.” A typical robot functions according to a computer program, but the new robot works differently. First, sensors in its four legs observe the robot’s movements and signals to its built – in computer. From the formation it collects, the robot creates its own programs that allow it to adapt to different situations. For example, when the researchers shortened one of the robot’s legs, the smart machine simply adjusted its way of walking – it used three legs instead of four. The researchers are looking for other places to put the resilient robot to work. One pellicle spot is the ocean floor. That dark and dangerous undersea terrain might be a good choice for a robot the scientists call the Starfish. “We never officially named the robot, but we usually refer to it as the Starfish, even though a real starfish has five rather than four legs,” says Bongard. “Also, a real starfish is much better than our robot at recovering from injury, because it can actually grow its legs again.” Scientists have created robots that help humans in many ways: by exploring space, fighting fires, and even performing surgery. 46.The newly designed robot distinguishes itself from the former ones because it___________ A.can communicate with people on the earth about their problems B.works according to a certain computer program C.can find its problems and solve them automatically D.can explore unfamiliar places 47.An example is given in the fourth paragraph in order to explain that the robot ___________ A.is used to create new programs B.has typical robot functions C.has sensors to observe its movements D.can gather information and adapt to new conditions 48.The underlined word “resilient” in the last paragraph means the robot is ___________. A.creative B.newly made C.able to recover D.informative 49.Which of the following is TURE about the robot “Starfish”? A.It was spoken highly of by people for its special ability? B.It will stumble and fall if damaged. C.It can grow its legs again once they are broken. D.It has started to work on the ocean floor. 50.What might be the best title of the passage? After more than a year of bitter political debate, President Obama sat down in the White House East Room on March 23 and signed the 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act into law with a pen,and then another pen,and another. Obama used 22 pens to sign the $938 billion health care bill. The practice of using different pens to sign important legislation(法规)dates at least as far back as Franklin Roosevelt. The reason is fairly simple. The pen used to sign historic legislation itself becomes a historical artifact. The more pens a President uses, the more thank-you gifts he can offer to those who helped create that piece of history. The White House often give pens to supporters of the newly signed legislation. When Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act in 1964, he reportedly used more than 75 pens and gave one of the first ones to Martin Luther King Jr. And in 1996, President Clinton gave the four pens he used to sign the Line-Item Veto bill to those most likely to appreciate the bill"s consequence. Once they"re given away, some pens end up in museums; others are displayed proudly in recipients"(接受者) offices or homes. But they sometimes appear again, like in the 2008 presidential campaign(竞选活动), when John Macain promised to use the same pen given to him by President Reagan to cut pork from the federal budget. Not every President goes for the multipen signature, however. President George W. Bush preferred signing bills with only one pen and then offering several unused "gift" pens as souvenirs. 小题1:.We can learn from paragraph 1 that the 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act .A.has been passed easily | B.was put forward one year ago | C.becomes law in the USA | D.is unimportant | 小题2:How are the pens dealt with after being used by President Obama?A.Supporters of the newly signed legislation are likely to get some of them. | B.Obama will keep them. | C.They will be just set aside | D.They will be sold to the public at a high price. | 小题3:What can we learn about John Macain? A. He was ever President in the USA. B. He took part in the 2008 presidential campaign. C. He never used the pen given by Reagan. D. He was only concerned about his own business. 小题4:What does this passage mainly tell us ? A. Obama signed the 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. B. It is a practice to use multiple pens to sign important legislation in the USA. C. Pens are necessary in the signature. D. All the presidents like the multipen signature. |
