For many parents, raising a teenager is like fighting a long war, but years go by without any clear winner. Like a border conflict(冲突)between neighboring countries, the parent-teen war is about boundaries: Where is the line between what I control and what you do? Both sides want peace, but neither feels it has any power to stop the conflict. In part, this is because neither is willing to admit any responsibility for starting it. From the parents’ point of view, the only cause of their fight is their adolescents’ (青少年)complete unreasonableness. And of course, the teens see it in exactly the same way, except oppositely. Both feel trapped. In this article, I’ll describe three no-win situations that commonly arise between teens and parents and then suggest some ways out of the trap. The first no-win situation is quarrel on unimportant things. Examples include the color of the teen’s hair, the cleanness of the bedroom, the preferred style of clothing, the child’s failure to eat a good breakfast before school, or his tendency to sleep until noon on the weekends. Second, blaming. The goal of a blaming battle is to make the other admit that his bad attitude is the reason why everything goes wrong. Third, needing to be right. It doesn’t matter what the topic is—politics, the laws of physics, or the proper way to break an egg—the point of these arguments is to prove that you are right and the other person is wrong, for both wish to be considered an authority—someone who actually knows something—and therefore to command respect. Unfortunately, as long as parents and teens continue to assume that they know more than the other, they’ll continue to fight these battles forever and never make any real progress. 小题1:Why does the author compare the parent teen war to a border conflict?A.Both can continue for generations. | B.Both are about where to draw the line. | C.Neither has any clear winner. | D.Neither can be put to an end. | 小题2:What does the underlined part in Paragraph 2 mean?A.The teens blame their parents for starting the conflict. | B.The teens agree with their parents on the cause of the conflict. | C.The teens accuse their parents of misleading them. | D.The teens tend to have a full understanding of their parents. | 小题3:Parents and teens want to be right because they want to__________. A.give orders to the other | B.know more than the other | C.gain respect from the other | D.get the other to behave properly | 小题4:What will the author most probably discuss in the paragraph that follows?A.Causes for the parent-teen conflicts | B.Examples of the parent-teen war | C.Solutions for the parent-teen problems | D.Future of the parent-teen relationship |

Most people drink when they are thirsty but often need more water after exercises. 65 to 70 percent of the human body is water. Water is important in several different ways. Most people need five to seven liters(升) of water every day, but we needn’t drink this amount(量) because a lot comes from the food we have. “It hurts me more than you” and “This is for your own good” — these are the statements my mother used to make years ago when I had to learn Latin, clean my room, stay home and do homework. That was before we entered the permissive period in education in which we decided it was all right not to push our children to achieve their best in school. The schools and the educators made it easy for us. They taught that it as all right to be parents who take a let-alone policy. We stopped making our children do homework. We gave them calculators, turned on the television, left the teaching to the teachers and went on vacation. Now teachers, faced with children who have been developing at their own pace for the past 15 years, are realizing we’ve made a terrible mistake. One such teacher is Sharon Klompus who speaks of her students “so passive” and wonders what has happened. Nothing is demanded of them, she believes. Television, says Klompus, contributes to children’s passivity. “We’re talking about a generation of kids who"ve never been hurt or hungry. They have learned somebody will always do it for them, instead of saying "go and look it up’, you tell them the answer. It takes greater energy to say no to a kid.” Yes, it does. It takes energy and it takes work. It’s time for parents to end their vacation and come back to work. It"s time to take the car away, to turn the TV off, to tell them it hurts you more than them but it"s for their own good. It"s time to start telling them no again. 小题1:Children are becoming more inactive in study because _______. A.they watch TV too often | B.they have done too much homework | C.they have to fulfill too many duties | D.teachers are too strict with them | 小题2:By “permissive period in education” (L.1, Para. 2) the author means a time _______.A.when everything can be taught at school | B.when every child can be educated | C.when children are permitted to receive education | D.when children are allowed to do what they wish to | 小题3:The main idea of the passage is that _______.A.parents should leave their children alone | B.kids should have more activities at school | C.it"s time to be more strict with our kids | D.parents should always set a good example to their kids |

In a world with limited land, water and other natural resources(资源), the harm from the traditional business model is on the rise. Actually, the past decade has seen more and more forests disappearing and the globe becoming increasingly warm. People now realize that this unhealthy situation must be changed, and that we must be able to develop in sustainable(可持续的)ways. That means growth with low carbon or development of sustainable products. In other words, we should keep the healthy while using its supply of natural resources. Today, sustainable development is a popular trend in many countries. According to a recent study, the global market for low-carbon energy will become three times bigger over the next decade. China, for example, has set its mind on leading that market, hoping to seize chances in the new round of the global energy resolution. It is now trying hard to made full use of wind and solar energy, and is spending a huge amount of money making electric cars and high-speed trains. In addition, we are also seeing great growth in the global markets for sustainable products such as palm oil(棕榈油), which is produced without cutting down valuable rainforest. In recent years the markets for sustainable products have grown more than 50%. Governments can fully develop the potential of these new markets. First, they can set high targets for reducing carbon emissions(排放) and targets for saving and reusing energy. Besides, stronger arrangement of public resources like forests can also help to speed up the development. Finally, governments can avoid the huge public expenses that are taking us in the wrong direction, and redirecting some of those expenses can accelerate the change from the traditional model to a sustainable one. The major challenge of this century is to find ways to meet the needs of a growing population within the limits of this single planet. That is no small task, but it offers a large of new chances for sustainable product industries. 小题1:The traditional business model is harmful because of all the following EXCEPT that____.A.it makes the world warmer | B.it consumes natural resources | C.it brings severe damage to future | D.it makes growth hard to continue | 小题2:What can we infer from Paragraph2?A.China lacks wind and solar energy | B.China is the leader of the low-carbon market | C.High-speed trains are a low-carbon development | D.Palm oil is made at the cost of valuable forests | 小题3:To fully develop the low-carbon markets, governments can______.A.cut public expenses | B.forbid carbon emission | C.develop public resources | D.encourage energy conservation | 小题4:We can learn from the last paragraph that business have many chances to _______.A.develop sustainable products | B.explore new natural resources | C.make full use of natural resources | D.deal with the major challenge | 小题5:What is the main purpose of the passage?A.To introduce a new business model | B.To compare two business models | C.To predict a change of the global markets | D.To advocate sustainable development |

Light travels at a speed which is about a million times faster than the speed of sound. You can get some idea of this difference by watching the start of a race. If you stand some distance away from the starter, you can see smoke from his gun before the sound reaches your ears. This great speed of light produces some strange facts. Sunlight takes about 8 minutes to reach us. If you look at the light of the moon tonight, remember that the light rays left the moon 1.3 seconds before they reached you. The nearest star is so far away that the light that you can see from it tonight started to travel towards you four years ago at a speed of nearly 2 million km. per minute. In some cases, the light from one of tonight’s stars had started on its journey to you before you were born. Thus, if we want to be honest, we can’t say, “The stars are shining tonight.” We have to say instead, “The stars look pretty. They were shining four years ago, but their light has only just reached the earth.” 小题1: Light speed is ______ sound speedA.as fast as | B.a million times slower than | C.about millions of times faster than | D.about a million times faster than | 小题2:If you stand 200 meters away from a man who is firing a gun to start a race, you will find out that ______.A.you can hear the sound before you see the smoke | B.the sound does not travel as fast as light | C.the sound will reach you before the man fires | D.sound travels about a million times faster than light | 小题3:Sunlight obviously (明显地) ______ than the light of the moonA.has to travel a greater distance | B.moves less quickly | C.travels much more quickly | D.is less powerful(有力的) | 小题4:The scientific way of saying "The stars are shining tonight" should be ______.A.the stars have been shining all the time | B.the stars seen tonight will shine four years later | C.the stars were shining long ago but seen tonight | D.the starlight seen today could be seen four years ago |
