Read a whole book in English? Me? Yes, you. Believe it or not, that may be easier than you think. Not all classics are too difficult or complicated. So you’re not limited to the simplified versions. And the easier books are not all for children. Books in their original versions may send you to the dictionary. And you might not understand everything you read. But reading one from cover to cover will give you a real sense of accomplishment(成就). The key is to find the right books. Let’s take a look at these. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (C.S. Lewis) Stepping into an old wardrobe, four English schoolchildren find themselves in the magical world of Narnia. On this delightful land, they find friends among the many talking creatures. The children soon discover, however, that Narnia is ruled by the White Witch. Edmund, one of the children, falls under her power. Who can free Narnia? Only Aslan, the great and noble lion. He alone knows the Deeper Magic. But the children themselves must help fight the battle against the White Witch and those who serve her. The Old Man and the Sea (Ernest Hemingway) Santiago, an old Cuban fisherman, hasn’t caught any fish in more than 80 days. Sailing far out from land, the old man hooks an enormous fish. That begins an agonizing three day battle. First he struggles against the great fish. Then he must fight off the sharks that circle the little boat and threaten to eat his fish. Exhausted and bleeding, the old man arrives back at shore. But his fish, his beautiful fish . . . Hemingway won the Nobel Prize for this superb story of strength and courage, of victory and regret. A Wrinkle in Time (Madeleine Lingle) Meg’s father, a U.S. government scientist, has been missing for many months. He had been experimenting with time travel when he mysteriously disappeared. Now Meg, her little brother Charles Wallace and her friend Calvin will try to rescue him. But first they must outwit the forces of evil they encounter(遇到) on their journey through time and space. Can they find Meg’s father before it’s too late? This novel is more than just a science fiction adventure. It’s an exploration of the nature of our universe. The Pearl (John Steinbeck) One day Kino, a poor Mexican pearl diver, finds a magnificent pearl. With it he dreams of buying a better life, new clothes and schooling for his son. Instead, it brings only evil. His wife pleads with him to get rid of it. "No," says Kino. "I will have my chance. I am a man." But when he kills a man who is trying to steal the pearl, Kino and his wife must run for their lives. This tale of dreams, justice and the power of greed is told simply and beautifully. The Long Winter (Laura Ingalls Wilder) It’s winter, 1880—1881, on America’s northern prairies. Mr. and Mrs. Ingalls and their four girls stay near the kitchen stove to keep warm. Heavy snowstorms cut them off even from neighbors. With the trains stopped, no supplies can reach the town. Food and fuel are running out. Day after day the girls must grind wheat for bread and twist hay to burn. At times they nearly lose the battle to keep their spirits up. This story provides a fascinating glimpse into the life of early American settlers. 63. In the passage, the author intends to _______. Advice to English learners Learners of English, especially self-taught learners may have trouble in understanding speeches by native speakers. The following ways might help improve their ability. First of all, do things step by step. It is not good to listen to something beyond your level. Better choose a suitable course and start with the first book. Go on to the second book only after you are sure you understand the first one. Secondly, stick to one course of study. Don’t change books often. Never let your attention be attracted by another course just because it seems to be more “ fashionable”(时髦). Thirdly, listen to the English news programme over the radio from time to time. Better go through the news stories in the Chinese-language newspaper first. That will make it easy for you to understand the English news on the radio. Fourthly, if you have time, listen to some interesting stories in “special English” from the VOA or other listening materials of the same level as that of your textbook. 小题1:This is a piece of advice to learners of English in how to_____.A.improve their listening ability | B.read fast | C.write better English and read fast | D.speak correctly | 小题2: If you want to understand the English news programme on the radio, you should_________. read the Chinese-language newspaper carefully read again and again the Chinese-language newspaper go through the Chinese-language newspaper be able to recite the Chinese-language newspaper 小题3:“Beyond your level” means something_______.A.easy for you | B.too difficult for you | C.not too easy and not too difficult for you | D.just all right for you | 小题4: The author advised that once you have taken up a course, you should_______. stick to it B. begin with the last book C. take up other courses if you are more fashionable D. not do anything else 小题5:In this passage, VOA stands for______.A.a book | B.a magazine | C.a textbook | D.a radio station |

You cannot see any object unless light from that object gets into your eyes. Some of the things you see give off light of their own. The sun, the stars, a lighted lamp are examples that can be ssen by their own light. Such things are luminous. Most of the things you see are not giving off light of their own. They are simply reflecting light that falls on them from the sun or some other luminous bodies. Then moon , for example , does not give off any light of its own. It is non-luminous. You see it because sunlight falls on it and some of it reflects in your direction. So moonlight is only secondhand sunlight. When you look at a book, it sends your eyes some of the light that falls on it, and you see the book. If light could be kept out from where you are so that there would be no light for the book to reflect, then you could not see the book even with your eyes wide open. Light travels so fast that the time in which it travels from the book you are reading to your eyes is so short as if it took no time at all. Light reaches us form the moon , which is about 380,000 kilometers away, in only a little more than a second. 小题1:You can see the book because___________.A.your eyes are close to it . | B.it reflects light | C.it has light of its own | D.your eyes can get to it | 小题2:The word “ reflects” means____________.A.throws back | B.takes back | C.gives off | D.sends out | 小题3: ___________ have light of their won.A.the sun and the moon | B.The stars and the earth | C.The sun and the stars | D.The moon and the earth |

Our sun is a star, and nine worlds move round it. Worlds like these are planets (行星). But there are other stars, other suns. Not only thousands of them, but millions of them. Do different stars have planets? We can see the planets round our own sun. But we haven’t seen any more. The stars are too far away from us. Stars give out (发出)light, but the planets don’t have any light of their own. So we can’t see them. They’re too far, and too dark. Still, we can tell that some stars have planets. While a big planet goes round, it pulls its star to one side. And sometimes we can see this, Then we know that the star has a planet. For example, Barnard’s Star(巴纳德星)is a small red star. And it is the quickest star in the universe. But sometimes it moves slower, and then quicker again. Fire fighting is a serous matter, knowing what to do during a fire can save people’s lives. It is important to know the ways you can use and show them to everyone else in the family, such as stairways and emergency exits, but not elevators. From the lower floors of building, escape through windows is possible. Learn the best way to get out from a window with the least chance of serious injury. The second floor window is usually not very high from the ground. An average person, hanging by the fingertips will have a drop of about 6 feet to the ground. It is about twice the height of an average man. Of course, it is safer to jump a short way down than to stay in a burning building. Windows are also useful when you are waiting for help. Be sure to keep the door closed before opening the window. Otherwise, smoke and fire may be drawn into the room. Keep your head low at the window to be sure you get fresh air rather than smoke that may have leaked into the room. On the second or third floor, the best windows for escape are those which open onto a roof. From the roof a person can drop to the ground more safely. Dropping onto cement might end in injury. Bushes and trees can help you to have a soft landing. 小题1:Which of the following should not be used when trying to escape from a fire?A.Windows | B.Elevators | C.Fire exits | D.Stairways | 小题2:How far from the ground is the second floor window?A.about 12 feet | B.about 6 feet | C.about the height of an average man | D.nearly 10 feet | 小题3:According to the passage, windows are ______ of escaping a fire?A.the only way | B.the best way | C.safer than any other ways | D.one of the possible ways | 小题4:The writer suggests that _______A.breathing in smoke might be harmful | B.smoke will enter the room through an open window | C.fresh air can’t reach the second floor window | D.to keep you head low will help you to escape a fire | 小题5:If you are on the second or third floor when a fire breaks out, you’d better _____A.drop directly onto the ground | B.first drop onto a roof then onto the cement | C.drop from a roof window then onto bushes and trees | D.drop onto the cement rather than bushes and grass |
