It is hard to track the blue whale, the ocean’s largest creature, which has almost been killed off by commercial whaling and is now listed as an endangered species. Attaching radio devices to it is difficult, and visual sightings are too unreliable to give real insight into its behavior. So biologists were delighted early this year when, with the help of the Navy, they were able to track a particular blue whale for 43 days, monitoring its sounds. This was possible because of the Navy’s formerly top-secret system of underwater listening devices spanning the oceans. Tracking whales is but one example of an exciting new world just opening to civilian scientists after the cold war as the Navy starts to share and partly uncover its global network of underwater listening system built over the decades to track the ships of potential enemies. Earth scientists announced at a news conference recently that they had used the system for closely monitoring a deep-sea volcanic eruption (爆发) for the first time and that they plan similar studies. Other scientists have proposed to use the network for tracking ocean currents and measuring changes in ocean and global temperatures. The speed of sound in water is roughly one mile a second—slower than through land but faster than through air. What is most important, different layers of ocean water can act as channels for sounds, focusing them in the same way a stethoscope (听诊器) does when it carries faint noises from a patient’s chest to a doctor’s ear. This focusing is the main reason that even relatively weak sounds in the ocean, especially low-frequency ones, can often travel thousands of miles. 81. The passage is chiefly about ____ . A. an effort to protect an endangered marine species B. the civilian use of a military detection system C. the exposure of a U.S. Navy top-secret weapon D. a new way to look into the behavior of blue whales 82. The underwater listening system was originally designed ____ . A. to trace and locate enemy vessels B. to monitor deep-sea volcanic eruptions C. to study the movement of ocean currents D. to replace the global radio communications network 83. The deep-sea listening system makes use of ____ . A. the sophisticated technology of focusing sounds under water B. the capability of sound to travel at high speed C. the unique property of layers of ocean water in transmitting sound D. low-frequency sounds travelling across different layers of water____ 84. It can be inferred from the passage that____. A. new radio devices should be developed for tracking the endangered blue whales B. blue whales are no longer endangered with the use of the new listening system C. opinions differ as to whether civilian scientists should be allowed to use military technology D. military technology has great potential in civilian use 85. Which of the following is true about the U.S. Navy underwater listening network? A. It is now partly accessible to civilian scientists. B. It has been replaced by a more advanced system. C. It became useless to the military after the cold war. D. It is indispensable in protecting endangered species. |
The Atlantic Ocean is one of the oceans that separate the Old World from the New. For centuries it kept the America from being discovered by the people of Europe. Many wrong ideas about the Atlantic made early sailors unwilling to sail far out into it. One idea was that it reached out to “the edge of the world” . Sailors were afraid that they might sail off the earth. Another idea was that at the equator(赤道) the ocean would be boiling hot. The Atlantic Ocean is only half as big as the Pacific, but it is still very large. It is more than 4,000 miles (6,000 km) wide where Columbus crossed it. Even at its narrowest it is about 2,00 miles (3,200 km) wide. Two things make the Atlantic Ocean rather unusual. For so large an ocean it has few islands. Also, it is the world’s saltiest ocean. There is so much water in the Atlantic that it is hard to imagine how much there is. But suppose no more rain fell into it and no more water was brought to it by rivers, it would take the ocean about more than 4,000 years to dry up. On the average, the water is a little more than two miles (3.2km) deep, but in some places it is much deeper. The deepest spot is near Puerto Rico. This “deep” measures 30,246 feet---almost six miles (9.6km). One of the longest mountain ranges of the world rises from the floor of the Atlantic. This mountain range runs north and south down the middle of the ocean. The tops of a few of the mountains reach up above the sea and make islands. Several hundred miles eastward from Florida there is a part of the ocean called the Sargasso Sea. Here the water is quiet, for there is little wind. In the days of sailing vessels(船) the crew were afraid they would be becalmed (can’t move) here. Sometimes they were. Today the Atlantic is a great highway. It is, however, not always a smooth and safe one. Storms sweep across it and pile up great waves. Icebergs float down from the far North across the paths of ships. We now have such fast ways of traveling that this big ocean seems to have grown smaller. Columbus sailed for more than two months to cross it. A fast modern steamship can make the trip in less than four days. Airplanes fly from New York to London in only eight hours and from South America to Africa in four! 61. What caused people to be unwilling to explore the Atlantic? A. There were no ships big enough to get across the Ocean. B. Sailors were afraid of being lost in the Ocean. C. The Atlantic Ocean was very unusual because it has few islands and the saltiest water. D. Many incorrect ideas such as “the edge of the world”, “the equator with boiling hot water” made people think the Ocean was full of danger. 62. What is the main idea of the fifth paragraph? A. How deep the water is. B. How to measure the water in the Atlantic. C. How much water the ocean holds. D. How rain affects the Ocean water. 63. What does the underlined word “highway” mean? A. High road B. Broad way C. Fast road D. Main water way 64. Why does the writer think “this big ocean seems to have grown smaller”? A. The water in the ocean is becoming less. B. We have more and more advanced traveling tools now C. The distance between the ocean and us is shorter. D. The steamship has a higher speed. |
"A survey was conducted in Shanghai where interviewees were asked if they wanted to be a factory worker. One percent of all people interviewed said “YES," Wang Hongjun, a technician, said, raising his voice for dramatic effect. "But I can tell you, only a small part of that 1 percent are telling the truth." I"ve met colorful people like Wang all over China. They are cynical (玩世不恭的) yet warmhearted, plain spoken but smart. And many of them are confined (局限于) to work in factories. Wang is a top technician but also represents manual factory workers, who are China"s most important natural resource. Their energy is powering China"s economic boom, and their muscle is turning the wheel of the world"s factory. But does their unskilled labor give their life meaning? At school, did they tell their friends: "When I grow up I want to work in a factory making socks?" Did you? Factory work has always been a stepping-stone from farm life to the city and a modern life. It"s been happening for centuries, but today, with our space-age technology, it"s outdated. Earning 1,200 yuan ($169) per month working in a factory is better than that on a farm, but as Wang points out, it"s not a dream career. There should be better ways to earn your rice. Many modern factories no longer have production line workers. Robots do the assembly (装配). People just do the monitoring. In this age of technology, in which China is now working smarter and not just harder, why are people still standing in production lines? But life is cheap in China. So why not continue to exploit the low-cost labor situation and keep the economy growing fast, some entrepreneurs may ask. But have these businessmen ever labored in a factory? 61. How many people surveyed really like to be factory workers? A. One percent B. Only a small part C. Only a small part of that one percent D. The writer didn’t mention it. 62. Which is NOT the writer"s opinion of factory workers? A. cynical B. unimportant C. warmhearted D. plain spoken 63. Wang Hongjun is a person who is___________. A. difficult to get along with B. humorous but serious C. cynical but warmhearted, plain spoken but smart D. full of energy but doesn"t want to work hard 64. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage? A. Factory workers make contributions to China"s economic boom. B. Working in a factory is better than that on a farm. C. Factory workers are satisfied with their living conditions. D. Some entrepreneurs exploited the low-cost labor situation. 65. The writer uses___________ to begin the passage. A. a lot of figures B. many examples C. some dialogue D. the result of a survey |
Most people would agree that it would be wonderful if humans could regenerate (再生) limbs. Those who have lost their arms or legs would be complete again. The day is still far off when this might happen. But in the last 10 years, doctors have reported regeneration in smaller parts of the body, most often fingers. Regeneration is not a newly-discovered process. For centuries, scientists have seen it work in some kinds of animals. Scientists now are looking for a way to turn on this exciting ability in more highly-developed animals, including humans. Their experiments show that nerves (神经), cell chemistry and the natural electric currents in the body all seem to have a part in this process. The body of every animal contains general purpose cells that change into whatever kind of cells the body needs. These cells collect around the wound. They form a mass called a blastema (芽基). The cells of the blastema begin to change. Some became bone cells, some muscle cells, some skin cells. Slowly, a new part re-grows from the body outward. When completed, the new part is just like the old one. More than 200 years ago, Italian scientist Luigi Spallanzani showed that younger animals have a greater ability to regenerate lost parts than older animals. So do animals lower on the ladder of evolutionary (进化的) development. The major differences seem to be that less-developed animals have more nerves in their tails and legs than humans do in their arms and legs. Another helpful piece of information was discovered in the late 1800s. Scientists found that when a creature is injured, an electrical current flows around the wound. The strength of the current depends on how severe the wound is and on how much nerve tissue (组织) is present. 59.According to the passage, limb regeneration ________. A. will become a reality in the near future B. has been reported successful in some patients C. has a long way to go before it works in humans D. is a branch of study set up by a group of modern doctors 60.What animals are lower on the ladder of evolutionary development ? A. More-developed animals. B. Less-developed animals. C. Highly developed animals. D. Fully-developed animals. 61.According to Luigi Spallanzani’s discovery, ________. A. humans have less nerves in the limbs than animals B. some animals may not have so much nerve tissue as others C. an injured animal regenerates masses of cells round the wound D. electrical current can be found around the would in younger animals 62.The passage is mainly about ________. A. a newly-discovered process B. research on animal evolution C. a new medical discovery D. research on regeneration |
