第三部分:阅读(共两节,满分35分) 第一节:阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分) 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。 There was a tradition in Europe that if a dove flew around a house where someone was dying then his soul would be at peace. And there are legends(传说) which say that Satan (撒旦) can turn himself into any bird except for a dove. But it was Pablo Picasso who made the dove a modern symbol of peace when he used it on a poster for the World Peace Congress in 1949. The rainbow is another ancient and universal symbol, often representing the connection between human beings and their gods. In Greek mythology(神话) it was associated with Iris, the goddess who brought messages from the gods on Mount Olympus. In Scandinavian mythology the rainbow was a bridge between the gods and the earth. In the Bible a rainbow showed Noah that the Biblical flood was finally over, and that God had forgiven his people. In the Chinese tradition, the rainbow is often taken as a common symbol for marriage. Nowadays the rainbow is used by many popular movements for peace and the environment, representing the possibility of a better world in the future and promising sunshine after the rain. The olive tree has always been a valuable source of food and oil. In Greek mythology, the goddess Athens gave the olive tree to the people of Athens who showed their thanks by naming the city after her. But no one knows for sure when or why it began to symbolize peace. There is probably a connection with ancient Greece. The winners of the Olympic Games were given crowns (冠) of olive branches. The symbolism may come from the fact that the olive tree takes a long time to produce fruit, so olives could only be grown successfully in long periods of peace. Whatever the history, the olive branch is a part of many modern flags symbolizing peace and unity. One well-know example is the United Nations symbol. 66. Which of the following is the most important in making the dove a modern symbol of peace? A. Greek mythology B. The European tradition C. Ancient legends D. Pablo Picasso 67. How many examples does the writer give to show the rainbow as a universal symbol of peace? A. Six B. Three C. Four D. Five 68. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A. The olive branch was regarded as a symbol of peace because it was given as gift by the goddess Athene. B. The name of the capital of Greece comes from the name of the goddess Athene. C. Olive trees do not produce fruits when there are wars in the world. D. The winners in the Olympic Games were given crowns of olive branches because they symbolized peace. 69. The United Nations takes the olive branch as its symbol because________. A. it represents hope in the future B. it has economic value for the world C. it often gives prizes to countries D. its duty is to keep peace and union 70. From the passage we can conclude that ______. A. all the symbols mentioned above are based on traditional beliefs B. all modern ideas come from Greek mythology C. all the symbols mentioned above are used on flags D. the UN has officially accepted the three symbols as symbols of peace |

Left in a bank it will hardly keep its value, however high the interest rate. Only a brave man, or a very rich one, dares to buy and sell on the Stock Market. Today it seems that one of the best ways to protect your savings, and even increase your wealth is to buy beautiful objects from the past. Here I am going to offer some advice on collecting antique clocks, which I personally consider are among the most interesting of antiques. I sometimes wonder what a being from another planet might report back about our way of life. "The planet Earth is ruled by a mysterious creature that sits or stands in a room and makes a strange ticking sound. It has a face with twelve black marks and two hands. Men can do nothing without its permission, and it fastens its young round people"s wrists so that everywhere men go they are still under its control. This creature is the real master of Earth and men are its slaves." Whether or not we are slaves of time today depends on our culture and personality, but it is believed that many years ago kings kept special slaves to tell the time. Certain men were very clever at measuring the time of clay according to the beating of their own hearts. They were made to stand in a fixed place and every hour or so would shout tire time. So it seems that the first clocks were human beings. However, men quickly found more convenient and reliable ways of telling the time. They learned to use the shadows cast by the sun. They marked the hours on candles, used sand in hour- glasses, and invented water-clocks. Indeed, any serious student of antique should spend as much time as possible visiting palaces, stately homes and museums to see some of the finest examples of clocks from the past. Antique clocks could be very expensive, but one of the joys of collecting clocks is that it is still possible to find quite cheap ones for your own home. After all, if you are going to be ruled by time, why not invest in air antique clock and perhaps make a future profit? 41. According to the passage, collecting antique clocks____. A. can hardly keep the value of your savings B. will cost much of your savings C. may increase your wealth D. needs your bravery 42. By quoting (引用) the remark of a being from another planet, the author intends to____. A. suggest human beings are controlled by a clock B. describe why clocks can rule the planet Earth C. tell readers what clocks look like D. compare chicks to human beings 43. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a way to measure the time? A. Counting the beating of one"s own heart. B. Making use of candles, sand and water. C. Observing shadows cast by the sun. D. Keeping slaves busy day and night. 44. The underlined phrase stately homes in paragraph 4 means A. state-owned houses B. houses in very good condition C. grand houses open to the public D. houses where statesmen meet regularly 45. The purpose of the passage is A. to introduce the culture of antique clocks B. to offer some advice on collecting antique clocks C. to compare different ways to make a future profit D. to explain convenient and reliable ways of telling time |
第三部分阅读(共两节,满分40分) 第一节:阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分) 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。 In 2008, the main candidates(候选人)for President each used this expression: “You can put lipstick(口红)on a pig, but it is still a pig.” This means that it is a waste of time to change something from ugly or unpleasant–looking to beautiful. There are other expressions about improving a pig’s appearance, like this one: “A hog in a silk waistcoat is still a hog.” Hogs are similar to pigs, only bigger. Americans use many other expressions about pigs, hogs and female hogs called sows, like this one, “You cannot make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear.” This means you cannot create something valuable from something that has no value. Then there is the expression “Cast pearls before swine(猪).” That means wasting something valuable on someone who will not be thankful or care about it. Hogs, which are very large animals, take up a lot of space but people should not take up more than their share. If one of your children is taking up too much space sitting in front of the television, other children might say: “Do not hog the couch.” And a road hog is a driver who uses more than his share of the road. Such a driver increases dangers for other drivers. Pig terms are also used in American politics. Farmers mark their pig’s ears to identify them. In politics, earmarks are money set aside for projects in a congressman’s home state. In many areas, pigs provide ham, bacon and other pork products to eat. All Americans want to be able to bring home the bacon because they want to earn enough money to provide the necessities of life. Experts say this term was first used in the 1920s. But it is believed to come from the much older game of catching a greased(涂了油的)pig. This was a popular event at country fairs in which the winner was awarded the pig. 41. The author writes this passage mainly to _________. A. express his support for the Presidential Election B. introduce some expressions used in Americans’ daily life C. criticize the bad influence caused by expressions about pigs D. discuss some problems caused by expressions about pigs 42. If you give a good book to a person who can’t read, which of the following is the most suitable to describe it? A. Cast pearls before swine. B. You can put lipstick on a pig, but it is still a pig. C. A hog in a silk waistcoat is still a hog. D. You cannot make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear. 43. A driver who takes up too much space on the road is often referred to as _________. A. a greased pig B. a couch hog C. a road hog D. a road earmark 44. How many words which refer to the same animal are mentioned in this passage? A. Three B. Four C. Five D. Six 45. Which of the following expressions are similar to “You cannot make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear.”? A. When pigs fly! B. To eat like a pig C. To sell a pig in a pork. D. To sweat like a pig. |
Global warming may or may not be the great environmental crisis of the 21st century, but — regardless of whether it is or isn’t — we won’t do much about it. We will argue over it and may even, as a nation, make some fairly solemn-sounding commitments(承诺) to avoid it. But the more dramatic and meaningful these commitments seem, the less likely they are to be observed. Al Gore calls global warming an “inconvenient truth,” as if merely recognizing it could put us a path to a solution. But the real truth is that we don’t know enough to relieve global warming, and — without major technological breakthroughs — we can’t do much about it. From 2003 to 2050, the world’s population is projected to grow from 6.4 billion to 9.1 billion, a 42% increase. If energy use per person and technology remain the same, total energy use and greenhouse gas emissions(排放) (mainly, CO2) will be 42% higher in 2050. But that’s too low, because societies that grow richer use more energy. We need economic growth unless we condemn the world’s poor to their present poverty and freeze everyone else’s living standards. With modest growth, energy use and greenhouse emissions more than double by 2050. No government will adopt rigid restrictions on economic growth and personal freedom (limits on electricity usage, driving and travel) that might cut back global warming. Still, politicians want to show they’re “doing something.” Consider the Kyoto Protocol(京都议定书). It allowed countries that joined to punish those that didn’t. But it hasn’t reduced CO2 emissions (up about 25% since 1990), and many signatories(签字国) didn’t adopt tough enough policies to hit their 2008-2012 targets. The practical conclusion is that if global warming is a potential disaster, the only solution is new technology. Only an aggressive research and development program might find ways of breaking our dependence on fossil fuels or dealing with it. The trouble with the global warming debate is that it has become a moral problem when it’s really an engineering one. The inconvenient truth is that if we don’t solve the engineering problem, we’re helpless. 46. What is said about global warming in the first paragraph? A. It may not prove an environmental crisis at all. B. It is an issue requiring worldwide commitments. C. Serious steps have been taken to avoid or stop it. D. Very little will be done to bring it under control. 47. According to the author’s understanding, what is Al Gore’s view on global warming? A. It is a reality both people and politicians are unaware of. B. It is a phenomenon that causes us many inconveniences. C. It is a problem that can be solved once it is recognized. D. It is an area we actually have little knowledge about. 48. Greenhouse emissions will more than double by 2050 because of ________. A. economic growth B. wasteful use of energy C. the widening gap between the rich and poor D. the rapid advances of science and technology 49. The author believes that, since the signing of the Kyoto Protocol, ________. A. politicians have started to do something to better the situation B. few nations have adopted real tough measures to limit energy use C. reductions in energy consumption (消耗) have greatly cut back global warming D. international cooperation has contributed to solving environmental problems 50. What is the message the author intends to convey? A. Global warming is more of a moral issue than a practical one. B. The ultimate solution to global warming lies in new technology. C. The debate over global warming will lead to technological breakthroughs. D. People have to give up certain material comforts to stop global warming. |
