DProtests (抗议) at the use of animals in research have taken on a new and fearful character in Britain with the attempted murder of two British scientists by the terrorist (恐怖分子的) technique of the pre-planted car–bomb . The research community (社团) will rightly be alarmed at these developments which have two aims :to draw public attention and to frighten people working in research with animals . The scientists insist that everything should be done to identify those responsible for the crimes and to put them on trial . The Defense Research Society has taken the practical step of offering a reward of £10,000 for information leading to those responsible , but past experience is not encouraging . People are unlikely to be attracted by such offers . The professional police will similarly be challenged by the problem of finding a needle in a haystack . That is why the intellectual (知识分子) community in Britain and elsewhere must act more strongly in its own defense . There are several steps that can be taken , of which the chief one is to demand of all the organizations that exist with the declared aims of defending the interests of animals that they should declare clearly where they stand on violence towards people . And it will not be enough for the chairman and chairwoman of these organizations to make placatory (安抚的) statements on behalf of all their members . These people should also promise that it will be a test of continuing membership in their organizations that members and would-be members should declare that they will take no part in acts of violence against human beings . 67.The words “these developments” (Linel , Para .2 ) most probably refer to . A.the use of animals in research B.the acts of violence against scientists C.the techniques of planting bombs in cars D.setting up of new animal protection organizations 68.Which of the following is true according to the passage ? A.The police gave up their efforts to find the criminals . B.The terrorists escaped with the help of their organization . C.The attempted murder caused great anxiety among British scientists . D.People supported the animal protectors in spite of their extremist acts . 69.The author’s purpose in writing this article is to demand that animal-protecting organizations . A.give up the use of violence B.declare their aims clearly C.continue the dialogue with the scientific community D.help to fid those responsible for the attempted murder 70.In the author’s opinion , . A.animal-protecting organizations should be declared illegal B.the scientists should take effective measures to protect themselves C.since people can lie , the problem about eh rights of scientists can’t be solved D.animal-protecting organizations should help the police to fight against the acts of violence against scientists |

The scientists say that the human body has changed very little since human first appeared on earth, but the way we live has changed greatly. Our body has not been able to deal with these changes in life style and this has led to new kinds of sicknesses. These new sicknesses were not known in ancient times. So they are called “diseases of civilization (文明)”.Many cancers and diseases of the blood system, including heart attacks (心脏病)and strokes(中风)are examples of such diseases. Scientists noted that early stone-age people used very little alcohol(酒精) or tobacco, probably none.Ancient people also got a great deal of physical exercise, but a change in food is one of the main differences between life in ancient times and life today. Stone-age people hunted wild animals for their meat, which had much less fat than farm animals. They also ate a lot of fresh wild vegetables, and fruits. They did not use milk and other dairy products, and they made very little use of grains. But today, we eat a large amount of dairy products and grain foods. We eat six times more salt than stone-age people. We eat more sugar. We eat twice as much fat but only one third as much protein(蛋白质)and much less vitamin C. People today probably do not want to live as people thousands of years ago did, but scientists say that we would be much healthier if we ate as those ancient people did, cutting the amount of fatty, salty and sweet foods. 1.The people in industrial nations would be much healthier if they ate . A.more foods as humans living 10,000 years ago did B.as humans living 10,000 years ago C.more kinds of food eaten by people living over 10,000 years ago D.more of the same kinds of foods eaten by people over 10,000 years ago. 2.New kinds of sicknesses have been found because . A.the human body has changed compared with human first appeared on earth B.the way we live has changed a little C.our body can’t deal with the changes in life style D.the way we live today is proper for the human body 3.What is the main cause mentioned in the article why people suffer from a lot of new sicknesses? A.Ancient people did a great deal of physical exercise B.People today have a lot of alcohol C.People today have more tobacco D.Food is quite different between life today and life in ancient times 4.Stone-age people were much healthier than people today because they ate a lot of . A.milk and other dairy products B.grain foods and farm animals C.salt and sugar D.wild animals, fresh wild vegetables and fruits 5.From this article, we know that are not good to our health. A.protein and vitamin B.milk and grain foods C.wild animals, vegetables and fruits D.a huge amount of fatty, salty and sweet foods |

Other scientists and the public did not believe the claim, but over the years, it was proven correct. Our ancestors had incredible artistic talents. Most of the cave art that has been discovered has been found in Spain and France. A smaller number of such caves are located in Italy, Portugal, Russia, and other countries. Scientists believe that many more caves will be discovered in the coming years, and are concentrating their efforts on Africa and the area between Europe and Asia. These two regions of the world were, populated first by humans. Cave art was carved or painted on the walls and roofs of caves, usually near the entrance. The entrance area was probably chosen to take advantage of daylight and to allow many people to view the paintings. In some cases, the art appears much deeper in caves and requires artificial light. Evidence suggests that the artists used torches or shallow bowls in which animal fat was burned. 9.What was the response of general public to the discovery of cave art made by Stone Age people? A. Berlin---China’s endeavor(efforts) to enhance(step up) environmental protection, energy-saving and gas emission-cut(减排) and build a resource-conserving society is of great significance to the world, said Klaus Toepfer, former chief of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) in a recent interview with Xinhua. “Such a move is in the interest of the entire world, and meets the need of the global sustainable development(可持续性发展),” he added. ACHIEVEMENTS “As a member of China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development (CCICED), I have seen the strong determination of China’s leadership,” said Toepfer. “The performance of the Chinese central and regional governments during the process of urbanization(城市化进程) also makes me believe that it has become the consensus(共识)of all the governments to protect the environment, save energy, cut greenhouse gas emission, and to build an resource-conserving society.” The expert took Shanghai as an example. “The Shanghai government is fully aware of the importance of an energy-saving and resource-efficient structure.” To make Shanghai an eco-friendly city, the municipal government(市政府)has taken measures such as building more sewage processing facilities(污水处理设备), limiting the number of cars to help ease traffic jam and improve air conditions, he said, describing them as quite impressive. He also noted many changes in the government’s policies concerning manufacturing and service industries(加工、服务业), an indication of China’s new approach to environmental protection and energy conservation. For instance, China has given higher priority(优先)to the proper handling of carbon dioxide emission. The country has also actively been engaged in the research and development of electricity-powered cars and cars that use alternative energy. MORE TO BE DONE However, despite the positive results, more needs to be done in China, the former UN environment chief said. China still needs to make tremendous efforts to tackle tough challenges such as to protect water resources, reduce air pollution and enhance energy efficiency, he added. Toepfer suggested that China introduce advanced new technologies on environmental protection and energy-saving from other countries, and actively participate in international cooperation projects on environmental protection and energy conservation as the country already has a strong scientific and economic capability. On the negative impacts of the ongoing financial crisis on environmental protection and energy conservation, Toepfer said the impacts are obvious, but only of short duration. As governments’ measures to stabilize financial markets take effect, environmental protection and energy conservation will again become the world"s major concern, he said. 67. The passage may probably be entitled ______. A. China"s environmental protection crucial (至关重要的)to the world B. China’s achievements and tasks in environmental protection C. China’s contributions to the sustainable development of the world D. China’s determination in face of the ongoing financial crisis 68. In Toepfer’s opinion, the major concern at present is ______. A. energy conservation B. environmental protection C. carbon dioxide emission D. financial crisis 69. Toepfer’s attitude towards the ongoing financial crisis is ______. A. contradictory B. negative C. optimistic D. pessimistic(悲观的) 70. Which of the following statements is true referring to the passage? A. Regional governments’ work is not so efficient. B. Efforts made by China have won the appreciation of the world. C. The present financial crisis will last for several years at least. D. At present China should introduce new technologies on production. |

You are certainly no stranger to the United Kingdom. This will be your second visit this year, and I also met Your Excellency when you visited as Vice-President in 2001. It is now almost twenty years since I visited China. Since then China’s development has caught the world’s attention and admiration. It matters to all of us what kind of country China’s people will build, what role they will play in the world of the twenty-first century, and how this will be sensed by others. China’s growth brings with it difficult challenges for you and your government, but also great opportunities. During her visit in September, the Princess Royal saw both the flagship cities of Beijing and Shanghai and the efforts of government and non-governmental organizations to reduce poverty in rural areas of Anhui and Gansu. Now we are able to work together and in the international community to solve problems of environmental protection and sustainable (可持续的) development ...
