On Christmas Eve a few years ago an English couple(夫妇) received a very special telephone call. It was only a 20-second call but it was very important. The Haydens’ 15-year-old daughter had disappeared six months before. On Christmas Eve she rang them. “I’m phoning to wish a happy Christmas,” she said, “I love you.” Ronals and Edwine Hayden were so happy that they started a special telephone service called “Alive and Well”. The service helps parents to get in touch with children who have run away from home. Young people can phone “Alive and Well” and leave a message for their parents. The telephones are answered by answering machines. So no one can speak to the child of making him return home. Parents of runaway children who are under eighteen can ask the police to bring their children home, so children do not want to tell their parents where they are. Through “Alive and Well” they can telephone their parents without worrying about this or giving out their addresses. The Haydens and their helpers write down the tape recorded telephone messages and connect the address given. Many of the 30,000 British teenagers who have left home are probably in London. For only two pence they can go into a telephone coin box and call their parents. They can dial(拨) 5675339 and stop a parent’s worry: Is he dead or alive? 72. The Haydens’ daughter rang her parents . Until late in the 20th century most Americans spent time with people of different generations. Now middle-aged Americans may not keep in touch with old people until they are old themselves. That"s because we group people by age. We put our three-year-olds together in day-care centers, our 13-year-olds in schools and sport activities, and our 80-year-olds in senior citizen homes. Why? We live far away from the old for many reasons. Young people sometimes avoid the old to get rid of fears of aging and dying. It is much harder to watch someone we love disappear before our eyes. Sometimes it`s got hard that we stay away from the people who need us the most. Fortunately, some of us have found our way to the old. And we have discovered that they often save the young. A reporter moved her family into a block filled with old people. At first her children were disappointed. But the reporter baked banana bread for the neighbors and had her children deliver it and visit them. Soon the children had many new friends, with whom they shared food, stories and projects. "My children have never been lonely, "the reporter said. The young, in turn, save the old. Once I was in a rest home (养老院)when a visitor showed up with a baby, she was immediately surrounded. People who hadn"t gotten out of bed in a week suddenly were ringing for a wheelchair. Even those who had seemed asleep woke up to watch the child. Babies have an astonishing power to comfort and cure. Grandparents are a special case. They give their grandchildren a feeling of security and continuity. As my husband put it "My grandparents gave me a deep sense that things would turn out right in the end." Grandchildren speak of attention they don"t get from worried parents. "My parents were always telling me to hurry up, and my grandparents told me to slow down," one friend said. A teacher told me she can tell which pupils have relationships with grandparents: they are quieter, calmer and more trusting. 67. Now in an American family, people can find that___________. A. children never live with their parents B. not all working people live with their parents C. aged people are supported by their grandchildren D. grandchildren are supported by their grandparents 68. Seeing a baby, the old people got excited because _______. A. they had never seen a baby before B. the baby was clever and beautiful C. the baby brought them the image of life D. the baby"s mother would take care of them 69. Why are some children quieter, calmer and more trusting ? A. Because they have relationships with their grandparents. B. Because their worried parents ask them to act like that. C . Because they have nothing to worry about. D. Because their teachers ask them to act like that. 70. Which of the following can show the fact that the old often save the young? A. The old can become friends of the children and the children may not feel lonely. B. The old get excited when they see a baby. C. The old can cure the young when they are sick. D. Babies have an astonishing power to comfort and cure. BCAA |
The Great Fire of London started in the very early hours of September 2, 1666. In four days it destroyed more than three-quarters of the old city, where most of the houses were wooden and close together. One hundred thousand people became homeless, but only a few lost their lives. The fire started on Sunday morning in the house of the King"s baker in Pudding Lane. The baker, with his wife and family, was able to get out through a window in the roof. A strong wind blew the fire from the bakery into a small hotel next door. Then it spread quickly into the Thames Street. That was the beginnings. By eight o"clock three hundred houses were on fire. On Monday nearly a kilometer of the city was burning along the River Thames. Tuesday was the worst day. The fire destroyed many well-known buildings, old St Paul"s and the Guildhall among them. Samuel Pepys, the famous writer, wrote about the fire. People threw their things into the river. Many poor people stayed in their houses until the last moment. Birds fell out of the air because of the heat. The fire stopped only when the King finally ordered people to destroy hundreds of buildings in the path of the fire. With nothing left to burn, the fire became weak and finally died out. After the fire, Christopher Wren, the architect, wanted a city with wider streets and fine new houses of stone. In fact, the streets are still narrow; but he did build more than fifty churches, among which was new St Paul"s. The fire caused great pain and loss, but after it London was a better place: a city for the future and not just of the past. 1. The fire began in ___________________________. A. a hotel B. the palace C. Pudding Lane D. Thames Street 2. The underlined word "family" in the second paragraph means “________________________________”. A. some people lost their lives B. the birds in the sky were killed by the fire C. many famous buildings were destroyed D. the King’s bakery was burned down 4. Why did the writer cite(引用) Samuel Pepys? A. Because Pepys was among those putting out the fire. B. Because Pepys also wrote about the fire. C. To show that poor people suffered most D. To give the reader a clearer picture of the fire. 5. How was the fire put out according to the text? A. The king and his soldiers came to help. B. All the wooden houses in the city were destroyed. C. People managed to get enough water from the river. D. Houses standing in the direction of the fire were pulled down. 6. Which of the following were reasons for the rapid spread of the big fire? D The decision to enter F1 and compete at the highest level of motorsport was an intended move by Toyota, the world’s third largest auto manufacturer ,to further challenge its own capabilities. By going head-to-head with the industry’s top performers on the world’s premier racing stage ,the Japanese giant was setting itself a huge task. A sport with an enormous international following, the risks of entering the F1 arena are high—but there are rich rewards for those who succeed .Besides being a showcase for state-of-the-art technology, the intense competition in this most demanding of racing disciplines leaves no room for self-satisfaction. More importantly, it fosters(培养)the kind of forward-thinking team spirit that Toyota is seeking. While F1 benefited greatly from the added prestige of having such a distinguished newcomer among its competitors ,the demands placed on Panasonic Toyota Racing last year revealed the shortcomings of not having enough experience as a team .Mistakes were made and valuable lessons were learned ,among which was the fundamental truth: “To stand still in F1 is to go backwards.” With the past in mind ,preparations for the 2003 season included sweeping changes on both the technical and personnel(人事的)sides. The management at Toyota Motorsport GmbH was restructured , with John Howett moving from Toyota Motor Marketing Europe to become President ,thus enabling the company founder , Ove Andersson ,more time to concentrate on the operation of the race team at the track .Andersson’s value as an inspirational leader was one of the team’s biggest assets(财富)in 2002. 68.What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 mean? A.To go backwards ,Toyota has to stand still. B.If Toyota doesn’t make improvements ,they will fall behind. C.Keeping calm will help go forward. D.In order to keep up with other teams ,Toyota has to stand still. 69.We can learn from the passage that . A.Toyota entered F1 to enlarge its market. B.Entering F1 is low risk but rich rewarding. C.Toyota team has always been experienced. D.Toyota made good preparations for the 2003 season. 70.What will the next paragraph talk about if the passage goes on? A.Preparations for the 2003 season. B.The value of Ove Andersson. C.How to improve the European market. D.Changes on technical side. |
C Britain is facing a sharp rise in its rat population as growing numbers of people leave fast food scraps in the street ,an environment group warned .Keep Britain Tidy said the rodents(啮齿动物)were stopping their traditional hunts underground and were roaming the streets ,tempted by discarded burgers ,pizzas and crisps. “The rat population is on the rise and soon it’ll be as common to see a rodent on our street as it is to see a dog or a cat,” said group Director ,Sue Nelson. The practice of dumping fast food litter and scraps on the street rather than in the trash—with young men the worst offenders—was behind the rise. According to the National Rodent Survey in 2005, Britain’s rat population has grown by nearly one quarter since 2000 and is now estimated at 60 million ,two million more than the human population. On average a rat can give birth every 24—28 days and just a single pair of rats can produce a colony of 2,000 a year. Around 200 people a year get Weil’s Disease –an infection which can lead to liver or kidney(肝肾)failure and eventually death and which is arrived in rat’s waste. To highlight the issue ,Keep Britain Tidy launched a cinema ad entitled “How close do you want them to get?” The ad gave a shocking image of a young woman sleeping in a bed of rots –echoing the nightmare scene from James Herbert’s classic horror tale The Rats, in which mutant rodents begin to prey on(捕食)humans. 64.Where did the rodents use to search for food? A.In the Street . B.Under the ground. C.From the trash cans. D.In burger shops. 65.What is the human population now according to the writer? A.60 million. B.58 million. C.35 million. D.2 million. 66.We may infer from the passage that . A.Weil’s Disease will finally end the world B.pizzas and crisps will become poisonous C.rats will endanger human beings’ life D.young people are blame for the rat population 67.By writing the passage, the author tries to . A.close some of the burger and pizza restaurants B.draw the public attention to the problem of rats C.prevent the rats from growing up D.making advertisement for the classic horror film The Rats |
