At 227 billion yuan ($33 billion) for 2008, Guangdong"s cultural industries accounted for 6.4 percent of its GDP and experienced a growth rate of 13.8 percent. But Lai admits that size does not equal weight. "Our businesses are mostly small, financing difficult and brands few." One local brand that has made it big is Pleasant Goat and Big, Big Wolf, also translated as Happy Sheep and Gray Wolf, China"s most popular cartoon series currently being aired. But Liu Manyi, general manager of Creative Power Entertaining Inc, the firm behind the hit show, is not laughing to the bank. Instead she is bitter: "Pirate discs were all over the streets before our first movie hit the screen. Their images appear on all kinds of products. All this has no proper licensing." In case you don"t know, China produces the largest amount of animated(动画的) programming in the world. But quantity is not quality. Behind every Pleasant Goat there are tens of thousands of flops. The best way for the government to promote the country"s creative industries is to crack down on piracy (盗版). Hollywood often raises its voice about being victimized (受害) in China. Truth be told, Hollywood is probably the least affected since there is a quota system for China"s importation of Hollywood films. Many Chinese producers are taking baby steps and the domestic market is all they have. If their rights in the home market are not protected, they will never see the day their products find a foreign audience. The sudden closure(关闭) of BT websites where copyrighted materials used to flow freely suggests a determination on the part of the government to take intellectual property rights seriously. This kind of websites is bad for us, so we should ban them. Much of the news coming out of the 2009 International Cultural Industries Forum was encouraging. China"s film industry is expected to get 6 billion yuan ($879 million) in box office receipts this year. A decade from now, this number may go up to 30 billion, according to some forecasts. If the government takes serious action against online and offline pirates, China"s creative industries may well have a bright future. 51. What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 1 mean? A. Fast as the development of Guangdong"s cultural industries is, they don’t have a big challenge in the world. B. Guangdong"s cultural industries can make a big profit although they are just the small companies. C. Guangdong"s cultural industries make a big contribution to its GDP because of their strong economic power. D. The development of Guangdong"s cultural industries cannot catch up with any other industries. 52. What does Liu Manyi think about Pleasant Goat and Big, Big Wolf? A. It is a failure since it is a local brand. B. It is a success but cannot get the expected profit. C. Its profit from the images has been shared legally. D. Pirate discs make it more popular among the children. 53. Hollywood films are mentioned to tell us that __________. A. Hollywood films make our creative industries have less space to survive B. it is piracy that makes it possible for Hollywood films to get less influenced C. our creative industries need enough protection to have a bright future D. foreign films have taken up more market in China than the local ones 54. Which of the following statements is TRUE? A. Chinese creative industries are more advanced than foreign ones. B. The domestic market is of little significance to the survival of Chinese creative industries. C. BT websites stand in the way of the development of Chinese creative industries. D. The growth of China"s film industry is always slow and needs more support. 55. In which column of a newspaper will you probably read this passage? A. Regional B. Economic C. Sports D. Cartoon |

Culture shock begins with the "honeymoon stage". This is the period of time when we first arrive in which everything about the new culture is strange and exciting. We may be suffering from "jet lag" but we are thrilled to be in the new environment, seeing new sights, hearing new sounds and language, eating new kinds of food. This stage can last for quite a long time because we feed we are involved in some kind of great adventure. Unfortunately, the second stage can be more difficult. After we have settled down into our new life, we can be very tired and begin to miss our homeland and our family, friends, pets. All the little problems in life seem to be much bigger and more disturbing when you face them in a foreign culture. This period of cultural adjustment can be very difficult and lead to the new arrival of rejecting or pulling away from the new culture. The third stage is called the "adjustment stage". This is when you begin to realize that things are not so bad in the host culture. Your sense of humor usually becomes stronger and you realize that you are becoming stronger by learning to take care of yourself in the new place. Things are still difficult, but you are now a survivor. The fourth stage can be called "at ease at last". Now you feel quite comfortable in your new surroundings. You can cope with most problems that occur. You may still have problems with the language, but you know you are strong enough to deal with them. There is a fifth stage of culture shock which many people don"t know about. This is called "reverse culture shock". Surprisingly, this occurs when you back to your native culture and find that you have changed and that things there have changed while you have been away. Now you feel a little uncomfortable back home. Life is a struggle! 64. When does culture shock happen? A. When you reach your teens B. When you move to a big city C. When you meet foreign people for the first time D. When you go to live in a foreign country 65. How do you feel during the first stage of culture shock? A. Lonely and depressed B. Dye (染料) can bring a little color to life. Most clothing is colored with dyes. Modern, manufactured dyes can be costly. Natural dyes from plant and animal products have been used since ancient times. So this week, we describe a natural way to dye wool. There are several methods to put dye onto material. The vat method, for example, can be used to dye wool with onionskins. For this example, use one hundred grams of natural wool. The wool must be clean. Leave it overnight in water and liquid soap. Then wash it with clean water that is a little warm. Gently squeeze out the extra water. A solution called a mordant (媒染) is used in the dying process. A mordant helps fix the dye to the material. Traditionally, mordants were found in nature. Wool ash is one example. But chemical mordants such as alum are popular today. Alum is sold in many stores. It is often mixed with cream of tartar, a fine powder commonly used in cooking. Mix eight grams of alum with seven grams of cream of tartar in a small amount of hot water. Add the solution to a metal pan of cool water. Next, add the wool and place the mixture over heat. Slowly bring the liquid to eighty-two degrees Celsius. Heat the mixture for forty-five minutes. After it cools, remove the wool and wash it. To prepare the dye solution, cover thirty grams of onionskins with water. Use only the dry, brown outer skins. Boil the liquid until the onionskins lose their color, about forty-five minutes. Remove the skins after the dye cools. Now it is time to dye the wool. Place the wool into the dye and heat the mixture. Bring it to a boil, then immediately reduce the heat to eighty-two degrees. Now heat the dye for about forty-five minutes or until the wool is the desired color. Keep in mind that wet wool looks darker than it is. Once the dye cools, remove the wool and wash it. Now the wool is orange or yellow. Or at least it should be. 57. According to the passage, mordants are ________. A. dyes used in the dying process B. materials which will be put dye to C. wood ashes used in the dying process D. not dyes but play an important role in the dying process 58. Which of the following statements about “natural dyes” is true? A. They might be cheaper than chemical dyes. B. They are more expensive than chemical dyes. C. They have been used for only recent years. D. They are all made from animal products. 59. As for the vat method, which of the following statements is NOT necessarily needed? A. Ash. B. Water. C. Mordant. D. Temperature. 60. Choose the proper order of dying wool: a. boil the liquid with onionskins. b. add mordants to a metal pan of cool water. c. wash the wool with clean water. d. put the wool into the liquid and heat it e. heat the mixture and then wash it. FROM 1964 to 1978, Dazhai, with a population of 500, was the most famous village in China. Millions of Chinese came to the Shanxi village to visit its terraced fields (梯田) and "splendid" irrigation systems. It was not until 1978 when Guo Fenglian, head of the village, paid a visit to the US that China"s model village found how far it had fallen behind those in developed countries. "I was astonished at their modern equipment in harvesting, which could even separate big tomatoes with small ones," said Guo. "American farmers" life quality also impressed me a lot. Every day they had two cups of milk, which is something we don"t have even in our wildest dreams." "We have to learn their advanced technology and administration for our own development," said then first Deputy Prime Minister Deng Xiaoping who was planning China"s reform and opening up policy then. "Through opening our doors, we would not only take advantage of foreign funds (资金), but also create job opportunities and cultivate (培养) talents." In 1978 Japanese electricity giant Panasonic (松下) came to China as the first foreign business to invest (投资) here and its success attracted other world brands into exploring the Chinese market. So far China has for 15 years taken in the world"s second biggest foreign investment, following the US, to help set the country in a fast growth. However, China"s 30-year road of reform was not always smooth. Doubts on the reform began to rise at the end of the 1980s as many people worried the country would turn to capitalism (资本主义). "The criterion for our judgment is whether it helps develop socialist productive forces, whether it helps increase the overall national strength of a socialist country, and whether it brings about better living standards," said Deng. "China"s reform and opening up is a unique success story. It has brought benefit to both China and the world," said William Keller, chief manager of a Swiss pharmaceutical (制药的) company. 小题1:Guo Fenglian was ______ at the sight of the modern equipment in harvesting when she visited the US in 1978. There are many sorts of spies. There are those employed by governments to protect their countries’ interests; there are those we find in fiction and film, like the famous James Bond; and then there are the spies of the business world. But now there is a new form of espionage (间谍): sports spying. It may be a profitable job – if the spy can find a buyer for the information. Last week, British newspapers reported that the England national team had been secretly recorded by an unknown group of individuals. Media suggested that bugs had picked up a discussion of team tactics (战术), as well as playful talk about athletes’ affairs and possible rewards for players if they manage to win the World Cup. England officials immediately filed a suit to stop media from publishing the contents of the recordings. Little is known about the identities of the spies, but authorities doubt they have any connection to rival sides preparing for this summer’s competition in South Africa. Rather, it appears that the people who bugged the hotel meeting room are just after money. If they find the right buyer, they could get a lot of it. Gambling in major sports, like football, involves much more than picking the winner of a particular match. People can also place bets on starting line-ups, the timing of substitutions and goals scored. Knowing a team’s tactics for a particular game, or for a series of games, can help gamblers to increase their chances of winning big money. England manager Fabio Capello tried to play down the importance of game tactics. He argued that a team’s psychological preparation is the most vital. “It’s more important to train the mind, to find confidence, create a group and a winning mentality,” he said. Perhaps of more interest to the casual fan are the discussions of the players’ relationships with wives and girlfriends. UK newspapers may be prevented from publishing the details, but some Britons might say, the chances of the recordings never being heard are about as good as those of England winning this year’s competition: slim to none. 小题1:We may know from the first paragraph that ______________.A.the spies mentioned are all pursuing money | B.all the spies are employed by the government | C.James Bond belongs to spies of the business world | D.if a sport spy can find a buyer, he can make money | 小题2:What does the underlined word “bugs” probably mean?A.A small insect. | B.The devices used in the spying. | C.A kind of virus. | D.A kind of laptop computers. | 小题3:The group of individuals who spied the England national team____________.A.are from the rival sides for sure | B.probably intended to make money | C.are involved in gambling | D.knew a winning mentality for a team is important | 小题4:What can we infer from the last paragraph?A.The chance of the England team winning the African World Cup is very small. | B.Many people will never hear the recordings. | C.A fan will be more interested in the players’ relationships with wives and girlfriends. | D.No one can get any information from the UK newspapers for ever. |
