Do dogs understand us? Be careful what you say around your dog. It might understand more than you think. A border collie博德牧羊犬 named Rico recognizes the names of about 200 objects, say researchers in Germany. The dog also appears to be able to learn new words as easily as a 3-year-old child. Its word-learning skills are as good as those of a parrot or chimpanzee(黑猩猩). In one experiment, the researchers took all 200 items that Rico is supposed to know and divided them into 20 groups of 10 objects. Then the owner told the dog to go and fetch one of the items and bring it back. In four tests, Rico got 37 out of 40 commands right. As the dog couldn"t see anyone to get clues, the scientists believe Rico must understand the meanings of certain words. In another experiment, the scientists took one toy that Rico had never seen before and put it in a room with seven toys whose names the dog already knew. The owner then told Rico to fetch the object, using a word the dog had never heard before. The correct object was chosen in seven out of l0 tests, suggesting that the dog had worked out the answer by the process of elimination(排除法). A month later, Rico remembered half of the new names, which is even more impressive. Rico is thought to be smarter than the average dog. For one thing, Rico is a border collie, a breed (品种)known for its mental abilities. In addition, the 9-year-old dog has been trained to fetch toys by their names since the age of nine months. It"s hard to know if all dogs understand at least some of the words we say. Even if they do, they can"t talk back. Still, it wouldn"t hurt to sweet-talk your dog every now and then. You might just get a big, wet kiss in return! 小题1:From paragraph 2 we know that ____________..A.animals are as clever as human beings | B.dogs are smarter than parrots and chimpanzees | C.chimpanzees have very good word-learning skills | D.dogs have similar "learning abilities as 3-year-old children | 小题2:Both experiments show that .A.Rico is smart enough to get all commands right | B.Rico can recognize different things including toys | C.Rico has developed the ability of learning mathematics | D.Rico won"t forget the names of objects once recognizing them | 小题3:Which of the following statements is true?A.The purpose of the experiments is to show the border collie"s mental abilities. | B.Rico has a better memory partly because of its proper early training. | C.The border collie is world-famous for recognizing objects. | D.Rico is born to understand its owner"s commands. | 小题4:What does the writer want to tell us?A.To train your dog. | B.To talk with your dog. | C.To be friendly to your dog. | D.To be careful with your dog. |

Snow falls in the Earth’s extreme North and South throughout the year. However, the heaviest snowfalls have been reported in the mountains of other areas during winter. Snow is even known to fall near the Equator (赤道),but only on the highest mountains. Snow contains much less water than rain, but much of the water the world uses comes from snow. Melting snow provides water for rivers, electric power stations and agricultural crops. In the western United States, mountain snow provides up to seventy-five percent of all surface water supplies. Snowfall helps to protect plants and some wild animals from winter weather. Fresh snow is made largely of air trapped among the snow crystals (晶体). Because the air has trouble moving, the movement of heat is limited. Snow also influences the movement of sound waves. The surface of the snow takes in, or absorbs, sound waves. As snow grows older or if there have been strong winds, it can become hard and flat. Then, the snow,s surface will help to send back sound waves. Snow may be beautiful, but it can be deadly. It is responsible for the deaths of hundreds of people. Many people die in traffic accidents on roads covered with snow and ice or from being seriously stuck in the winter storm. Others die from heart attacks caused by too much physical activity out in the cold. People may not be able to avoid living in areas where it snows often. However, they can avoid becoming victims of snowstorms. People should stop driving and stay at home until the storm has passed. People living in these areas should carry emergency supplies in their vehicle. These include food, emergency medical supplies, and extra clothing to stay warm and dry. 小题1:Mountain snowfall _____.A.is heavier than that in the South and the North Poles | B.has never occurred near the Equator of the earth | C.brings less of the water the world uses than rain does | D.provides up to seventy—five percent of water supplies worldwide | 小题2:Snow protects plants and wild animals from cold weather by _____.A.supplying much more air | B.limiting heat movement | C.absorbing strong winds | D.sending back sound waves | 小题3:Snow can be deadly mainly because it can _____.A.cause road accidents | B.make people stuck in winter storms | C.lead to heart attacks | D.make people victims of snowstorms | 小题4:What will the text probably tell us following the last paragraph? _.A.How to drive during snowstorms | B.Where we can get emergency supplies | C.How to prevent heart attacks out in cold | D.Why we should stay warm and dry in winter |

Remembering names is an important social skill. Here are some ways to master it. Recite and repeat in conversation. When you hear a person’s name, repeat it. Immediately say it to yourself several times without moving your lips. You could also repeat the name in a way that does not sound forced or artificial. Ask the other person to recite and repeat. You can let other people help you remember their names. After you’ve been introduced to someone, ask that person to spell the name mad pronounce it correctly for you. Most people will be pleased by the effort you’re making to learn their names. Admit you don’t know. Admitting that you can’t remember someone’s name can actually make people relaxed. Most of them will feel sympathy if you say. “I’m working to remember names better. Yours is right on the tip of my tongue. What is it again?” Use connections. Link each person yon meet with one thing you find interesting or unusual. For example, you could make a mental note: "Vicki Cheng -- tall, black hair." To reinforce your associations, write them on a small card as soon as possible. Limit the number of new names you learn at one time. When meeting a group of people, concentrate on remembering just two or three names. Free yourself from remembering every one. Few of the people in mass introductions expect you to remember their names. Another way is to limit yourself to learning just first names. Last names can come later. Go early. Consider going early to conferences, parties and classes. Sometimes just a few people show up on time. There’re fewer names for you to remember. And as more people arrive, you can hear them being introduced to others --- an automatic review for you. 小题1:How will most people feel when you try hard to remember their names?A.They will be moved. | B.They will be upset. | C.They will be delighted. | D.They will be discouraged. | 小题2:If you can"t remember someone"s name, you may A.tell him the truth | B.tell him a white lie | C.ask him for pity | D.ask others to help you | 小题3:When you meet a group of people, it is better to remember A.all their names | B.a couple of names first | C.just their last names | D.as many names as possible | 小题4:What does the text mainly tell us?A.Tips on an important social skill. | B.Importance of attending parties. | C.How to make use of social skills. | D.How to recite and repeat names. |

Every year Chris Brogan posts his three words for a new year. many others and I have followed his lead for the past three or four years. They helped me a lot. My words for last year were “passion”, “focus” and “delegate” and I stayed true to them. This year, 2013, my goals are more personal and less professional. FOCUS Focus is making a repeat appearance on my list this year because I’m too much of a multitasker. The problem is that I have trouble finishing one thing with so many things calling me. When I was working as a writer, all my projects were handled via a schedule, I’m putting a fitness and housekeeping routine into my schedule. HEALTH I get so busy taking care of everyone else, and I forget to take care of myself and this has to change. My health suffers and my weight suffers. I have to get my health in check , not only for me but because I promised my 9-year-old son. I’ll make good food and lifestyle choices. I miss being thin, and it’s time to get it back. CELEBRATE What good is having it if I’m not taking time to enjoy it? I have a wonderful job, a happy family, and so much to be thankful for. So how come I spend all my time working? Last summer my family took our first vacation in four years, the best thing I’ve done for myself and my family in a long time. This year, I’m making sure to take time to enjoy life and celebrate its many blessings. Do you have any words for 2013? 小题1:The underlined word “multitasker” probably refers to a person who .A.makes a living by writing | B.always fails to finish a task on time | C.has several things to do at the same time | D.pays more attention to fitness and housekeeping | 小题2:Why does the writer have “HEALTH” as one of his three words?A.He wants to take better care of others. | B.He’s gaining weight and feeling bad. | C.He did not take any exercise in the past. | D.He got the idea from his son. | 小题3:What can we learn from the passage?A.The word “CELEBRATE” can remind the writer to enjoy life. | B.The writer has a vacation with his family every four years. | C.The word “FOCUS” can help the writer focus on his family. | D.The writer used to be overweight for lack of exercise. | 小题4:The best title for the passage might be .A.Three Words for 2013 | B.Health Should Go First | C.Keep Organized | D.Goals for 2013 |

阅读下面短文并回答问题,然后将答案写到答题卷相应的位置上(请注意问题后的字数要求)。 Swimming is one of those activities that can be learned early in life. Little children can learn to swim as soon as they walk. In fact, you need the same skills in walking as in swimming. However, I believe that five is the best age to learn. By five or six, a child knows fear of water, a very important thing to know. It’s wise to be afraid, to recognize true danger. Young ones understand that the water can sometimes be very dangerous. To really benefit from swimming, every swimmer should learn ____________:butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and crawl. I feel that one of these—the breaststroke—is different from the others, since some young swimmers use this stroke naturally, without any training. In swimming, there are certain rules every swimmer should follow: (1) Never swim alone! No matter how good you are in the water, don’t risk drowning by swimming alone. If you swim by yourself, with no life guards or friends with you, you may get into trouble. (2) Don’t go beyond your abilities. Most swimmers know enough not to swim too far from the bank or the beach. Showing off by doing dangerous tricks is no good. Swim safely and you will continue to swim and alive. (3) Don’t smoke. Swimming depends on a healthy body; good lungs are part of it. (4) Work at any activity that builds muscles. 小题1:What is the main idea of the passage?
