Paula and Rory have fives kids, three dogs, and a rabbit. When the house is very noisy, Megan, one of the children, is quietly inventing. A year ago, the 10-year-old had to design an anti-smoking poster, she came up with the idea of creating something that shows the average amount of tar(尼古丁) a smoker collects from just four packs of cigarettes. “I like people to play with things more than read and write,” she says. So she researched her idea on the Internet, found a company in China that could make it, saved up her pocket money and got her idea made. Paula says her daughter “think differently”: Ideas jump into her mind. After she got sunburnt on holiday, Megan invented a small plastic bracelet(手镯) that changes colors in the sun, telling you when to put on sunscreen(防晒霜). Several sunscreen companies have expressed an interest in the idea. She also came up with an idea to make a ball filled with water to stop the dog from feeling thirsty. “But we didn’t do anything with it,” says Paula. Then she pulls out a picture of a special fishing rod(钓鱼竿) she had designed. “There is a camera on the hook(钩),” she explains, “and the screen is on the handle, and it shows if you’ve caught a fish or not.” Megan doesn’t want to go to university. She keeps her pink-and -cream bedroom tidy. Paula is amazed and a bit confused by her daughter. “Everything has to be in a certain order,” Paula says. “Her brothers and sisters go with the flow, but with Megan, it’s ‘What time will that be happening?’ or ‘Where am I being picked up from today?’” 小题1:From Paragraph 2, we can infer that Megan .A.is not willing to go to school | B.likes to play with her brothers and sisters | C.prefers making something by herself | D.is good at reading and writing | 小题2:What did Megan invent after she got sunburnt on vacation?A.The anti-smoking poster | B.The ball providing water for thirsty dogs | C.The fishing rod telling whether you’ve caught a fish | D.The bracelet telling when to put on sunscreen | 小题3: The underlined phrase “go with the flow” probably means “ .”A.do what the most people usually do | B.follow the fashion closely | C.set an example to others | D.do something differently from others | 小题4:According to the passage, which of the following about Megan is true?A.She has fives kids, three dogs, and a rabbit. | B.She designed an anti-smoking poster when she was nine. | C.She founded a company in China to get her idea made. | D.She invented a small plastic bracelet to change the color of sunscreen. | 小题5:The passage is mainly about .A.how Megan helps people give up smoking | B.a little girl’s dream to be a world-famous inventor | C.a 10-year-old inventor’s story | D.Megan’s relationship with her family members |

A “blogger” is a person who writes on an Internet computer web site called a “blog”.The word “blog” is a short way of saying web log, or personal web site.Anyone can start a blog, and they can write about anything they like. There are millions of blogs on the Internet today. They provide news, information and ideas to many people who read them. They contain links to other web sites. And they provide a place for people to write their ideas and react to the ideas of others. My husband is a born shopper. He loves to look at things and to touch them. He likes to compare prices between the same items in different shops. He would never think of buying anything without looking around in several different shops. On the other hand, I’m not a shopper. I think shopping is boring and unpleasant. If I like something and I have enough money to take it, I buy it at once. I never look around for a good price or a better deal. Of course my husband and I never go shopping together. Doing shopping together would be too painful for both of us. When it comes to shopping, we go our different ways. Sometimes I ask my son Jimmy to buy some food in the shop not far from our home. But he is always absent-minded. This was his story. One day I said to him, ” I hope you won’t forget what I have told you to buy.” “ No,“ said Jimmy. “I won’t forget. You want three oranges , six eggs and a pound of meat.” He went running down the street to the shop. As he ran, he said to himself over and over again, “three oranges , six eggs and a pound of meat.” In the beginning he remembered everything but he stopped several times. Once he saw two men fighting outside a clothes shop until a policeman stopped them. One of them was badly hurt. Then he stopped to give ten cents to a beggar. Then he met some of his friends and he played with them for a while. When he reached the shop, he had forgotten everything except six eggs. As he walked home, his face became sadder and sadder. When he saw me he said, “I’m sorry, Mum. I have forgotten to buy oranges and the meat. I only remembered to buy six eggs, but I’ve dropped three of them.” 小题1:The husband likes shopping because _______.A.he has much money. | B.he likes the shops. | C.he likes to compare the prices between the same items. | D.he has nothing to do but shopping. | 小题2:They never go shopping together because_______.A.their ways of shopping are quite different | B.they hate each other. | C.they needn’t buy anything for the family | D.they don’t have time for it. | 小题3:Jimmy can’t do the shopping well because _______.A.he is young | B.he is absent-minded | C.he often loses his money | D.he doesn’t like shopping | 小题4:Jimmy didn’t buy what his mother wanted because_______.A.the shop was closed that day | B.the policeman stopped him | C.he forgot some of them | D.he gave all the money to the beggar |

“Mum, what does it mean when someone tells you that they have a skeleton (骨骼) in the closet (衣橱)?”Jessica asked. “A skeleton in the closet?” her mother paused thoughtfully. “Well, it’s something that you would rather not have anyone else know about. For example, if in the past, someone in Dad’s family had been arrested for stealing a horse, it would be ‘a skeleton in his family’s closet’. He really wouldn’t want any neighbor to know about it.” “Why pick on my family?” Jessica’s father said with anger. “Your family history isn’t so good, you know. Wasn’t your great-great grandfather a prisoner who was transported to Australia for his crimes?”“Yes, but people these days say that you are not a real Australian unless your ancestors arrived as prisoners.”“Gosh, sorry I asked. I think I understand now,” Jessica cut in before things grew worse. After dinner, the house was very quiet. Jessica’s parents were still quite angry with each other. Her mother was ironing clothes and every now and then she glared at her husband, who hid behind his newspaper pretending to read. When she finished, she gathered the freshly pressed clothes in her arms and walked to Jessica’s closet. Just as she opened the door and reached in to hang a skirt, a bony arm stuck out from the dark depths and a bundle of white bones fell to the floor. Jessica’s mother sank into a faint (晕倒), waking only when Jessica put a cold, wet cloth on her forehead. She looked up to see the worried faces of her husband and daughter. “What happened? Where am I?” she asked. “You just destroyed the school’s skeleton, Mum,” explained Jessica. “I brought it home to help me with my health project. I meant to tell you, but it seemed that as soon as I mentioned skeletons and closets, it caused a problem between you and Dad.” Jessica looked in amazement as her parents began to laugh madly. “They’re both crazy,” she thought. 小题1: According to Jessica’s mother, “a skeleton in the closet” means .A.a family honor | B.a family secret | C.a family story | D.a family treasure | 小题2:What can we learn about some Australian’s ancestors from Paragraph 2?A.They were brought to Australia as prisoners. | B.They were the earliest people living in Australia. | C.They were involved in some crimes in Australia. | D.They were not regarded as criminals in their days. | 小题3:Jessica’s mother fell down into a faint because she was .A.knocked | B.frightened | C.injured | D.surprised | 小题4:Why did Jessica bring a skeleton home? “Everybody loves a bargain.” One person’s useless, ugly, or broken object can be another person’s bargain. That is why so many Americans do not throw things away. They put them outside their houses. They put on a “For Sale” sign. And, as simple as that, they have a yard sale. The sellers put a paid announcement(付费通告)in a local newspaper. It tells when and where the yard sale will take place. These sales are very popular during weekends in spring, summer, and autumn. Early in the morning, all the things to be sold are carried out of the house. Then they sit all day in the sunlight---like tired guests at a party---waiting for someone to take them home. Just about anything can be sold at a yard sale. Sometimes, there are more clothes than anything else. Cooking equipment is also popular. So are old toys, tools, books, tables and chairs. Then there are objects called “white elephants”. A white elephant is something you think is extremely ugly or useless. It may be an electric light shaped like a fish. You feel a sharp pain whenever you look at it. To someone else, however, it might be a thing of beauty and joy. Some people go to yard sales to find a special thing that they collect. It may be old toy trains, for example, or painting of dogs. Experts say more Americans are collecting old things now than ever before. Most people who go to yard sales, however, are not looking for anything special. They might buy an object simply because it costs so little. They enjoy negotiating(谈判) over prices, even if they really do not need the object. Later, they may hold their own yard to sell all the things they have bought. 小题1:What kind of things will go to a yard sale? A.Cheap and ugly things. | B.Things people no longer use. | C.Things out of season. | D.Things of great value. | 小题2:A white elephant refers to _________.A.something that can cause a feeling of pain | B.something disliked by the owners while appreciated by others | C.something sold at the lowest prices | D.a toy shaped like a fish | 小题3: Most people go to yard sales to________.A.find valuable paintings | B.look for something special | C.find a bargain | D.kill their time | 小题4: Which of the following is NOT true about a yard sale?A.It may not be held when the weather is very cold. | B.It can last for a whole day. | C.It is usually held with a party. | D.It is held outdoors. | 小题5:We can infer from the last paragraph that__________.A.people may find something of great value on a yard sale | B.yard sales only attract those who have a low income | C.things on a yard sale can cost people a lot | D.most people don’t want to go to yard sales. |
