Coming home from school that dark winter day so long ago, I was filled with excitement of having the weekend off. But I was 41 into stillness by what I saw. Mother, seated at the far end of the sofa, was 42 with the second-hand green typewriter on the table. She told me that she couldn’t 43 fast and then she was out of work. My shock and embarrassment at finding Mother in tears was a perfect proof of how 44 I understood the pressure on her. Sitting beside her on the sofa, I began very slowly to understand. “I guess we all have to 45 something,” Mother said quietly. I could 46 her pain and the tension of 47 the strong feeling that were interrupted by my 48 . Suddenly, something inside me lit up. I reached out and put my arms around her. She broke then. She put her face 49 my shoulder and sobbed. I held her 50 and didn’t try to talk. I knew I was doing what I should, what I could and that was 51 . At that moment, feeling Mother’s 52 with feelings, I understood for the first time her being easy to 53 . She was still my mother, 54 she was something 55 : a person like me, capable of fear, 56 and failure. I could feel her pain as she must have felt mine on a thousand occasions when I sought 57 in her arms. A week later Mother took a job selling dry goods at half the salary the radio station __58 . “It’s a job I can do, though.” She said simply. But the evening practice on the green typewriter continued. I had a very 59 feeling now when I passed her door at night and heard her 60 away across the paper. I knew there was something more going on in there than a woman learning to type.

小题1: A。 小题1: A。 小题1: A。 reach for 去拿。 小题1: A。 小题1: A。that was enough与I knew ... 小题1: A。 小题1: A。 |

In this modern world, we rush around all day, doing things, talking, sending and reading messages. We are always on, always connected, always thinking, always talking. There is no 36 for stillness. And when we are 37 to be still because we’re in line for something, or waiting at a doctor’s appointment, or on a bus or train, we often 38 something to do. Some will play with mobile devices, other will read something. Being still isn’t something we’re 39. This comes at a 40 : we lose that time for 41 , for observing and listening. We lose peace. And 42 yet: sometimes too much action is worse than no action at all. You can run around crazily, but get 43 done. Take a moment to think about 44 you spend your days. Are you constantly rushing around? Are you constantly reading and answering 45 checking on the news and the latest stream of information? Are you always 46 through your schedule? Is this how you want to spend your 47 ? If so, peace be with you. If not, take a moment to be 48 . Don’t think about what you have to do, or what you’ve done already. 49 be in the moment. Then after a minute or two of doing that, consider your life, and how you’d 50 it to be. See your life with less move anent, less doing, less rushing. See it with more stillness, more consideration, more 51 . Then be that vision. It’s pretty simple: all you have to do is sit still for a little bit each day. 52 you’re gotten used to that, try doing less each day. Breathe when you feel yourself moving too 53 . slow down. Be present. Find happiness now, in this moment, instead of 54 for it.

No one wants to look stupid or do the wrong thing at a new job. It is important to make the right impression from the very first day. You will face new people. You will be in a new place. It may be difficult to know what to do. Here are five tips to help you make it through the first days at a new job: 1. First impressions can last forever. Make sure you make a good one. Before your first day, find out if your new job has a dress code (rules about what you can wear to work). If so, be sure to follow it. No matter what, always be neat and clean. 2. Get to work on time. Give yourself an extra15 minutes to make sure you arrive on time. 3. Pay attention to introductions. One of the first things that your supervisor may do is to introduce you to co-workers. These co-workers will be important to you. They are the ones who will answer your questions when the boss is not around. 4. Ask plenty of questions. Make sure that your supervisor has told you what is expected of you. If he or she has not told you your duties, ask for a list. Set daily and weekly goals for yourself. 5. Never be the first one to leave. My wife passed away a few years ago, and I went through the worst time in my life. I even wanted to kill myself. Just for kids, I had to continue to live and work as small-town doctor at my medical clinic in Hawaii. My kids had gone to live on the mainland, and I was alone. Then they asked me to have a family trip. On our trip, we turned on the TV at the motel and saw the second plane crash into the World Trade Center. Seeing it falling down, I said to my kids: “I’m going to Afghanistan”. And a few weeks later, international Medical Corps sent me to set up 20 clinics in provinces where people had no health care. In these field clinics surrounded by frightening shoots or deadly bombs, we were eventually serving 27,000 patients a month in a very busy schedule. Tired and nervous, I gradually had a sense of achievement, a sense of purpose, and my depression went away. In the years to follow, I went to Indonesia after the tsunami, Pakistan after the earthquakes, Sudan after the civil warm and Iraq after more and more bombs. Each time after disasters one after another, hundreds of people were killed, wounded and many more had to flee. We once set up movable clinics in an area with 19,000 refugees, and it was supposed to hold 13,000 originally. Flu broke out, one of the biggest killers of kids in refugee camps, and it spread like wildfire. Water and food were also serious problems. “Adventures or not?” I often asked myself. When my wife passed away, I thought my life was done. But in reality, it was just getting started. At the end of her life, she went unconscious. I held her head in my hands and told her of all the places we would visit and the exciting adventures we would have. I think about the moment many times during my “adventures”. I didn’t know how predictive those words would be. But I know that she is still with me. 小题1:Where has the doctor been in the past few years?A.Some countries where he could set up clinics. | B.Some African countries where flu broke out. | C.The places where the earthquakes happened. | D.The places that the horrible disasters struck. 2:How would the doctor describe his life after he had worked in Afghanistan? A.Tired and troublesome. | B.Busy and risky. | C.Meaningful and helpful | D.Frightening and depressing. 3:The underlined word “refugees” means people_______________.A.who are robbed, killed, or wounded | B.who suffer from flu in movable clinics | C.who like to take adventures | D.who have lost homes because of disasters. 4:Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A.the doctor’s wife encouraged him to work in foreign countries. | B.What the doctor said to his wife before her death became reality. | C.The doctor’s adventures made him understand the love of his wife. | D.With the true love of his wife, the doctor started to change his life. |
