阅读理解。     Beauty has always been regarded as something praiseworthy.Almost everyone thinks attractive
people are happier and healthier, have better marriages and have more respectable occupations.
Personal consultants give them better advice for finding jobs.Even judges are softer on attractive
defendants(被告).But in the executive circle, beauty can become a liability.
While attractiveness is a positive factor for a man on his way up the executive ladder,it is harmful
to a woman.
Handsome male executives were thought as having more integrity than plainer men;effort and
ability were thought to account for their success.
Attractive female executives were considered to have less integrity than unattractive ones;their
success was attributed not to ability but to factors such as luck.
All unattractive women executives were thought to have more integrity and to be more capable
than the attractive female executives.Interestingly, though, the rise of the unattractive overnight successes
was attributed more to personal relationships and less to ability than that of attractive overnight successes.
Why are attractive women not thought to be able?An attractive woman is thought to be more
feminine and an attractive man more masculine(有男子气概的)than the less attractive ones. Thus,an
attractive woman has an advantage in traditionally female jobs, but an attractive woman in a traditionally
masculine position appears to lack the"masculine"qualities required.
This is true even in politics."When the only clue is how he or she looks, people treat men and women
differently,"says Anne Bowman, who recently published a study on the effects of attractiveness on
political candidates. She asked 125 undergraduate students to rank two groups of photographs, one of
men and one of women,in order of attractiveness. The students were told the photographs were of
candidates for political offices. They were asked to rank them again,in the order they would vote for
them.
The results showed that attractive males utterly defeated unattractive men,but the women who had
been ranked most attractive invariably received the fewest votes.1.The underlined word "liability"(in Para.1)most probably means "________".A.misfortune
B.instability
C.disadvantage
D.burden2.In traditionally female jobs,attractiveness________.A.reinforces(加强)the feminine qualities required
B.makes women look more honest and capable
C.is of primary importance to women
D.often enables women to succeed quickly3.Bowman"s experiment reveals that when it comes to politics,attractiveness________.A.turns out to be an obstacle to men
B.affects men and women alike
C.has as little effect on men as on women
D.is more of an obstacle than a benefit to women4.It can be inferred from the passage that people"s views on beauty are often________.A.practical
B.prejudiced
C.oldfashioned
D.pessimistic5.The author writes this passage to________.A.demand equal rights for women
B.emphasize the importance of appearance

________________. Fifty years ago, only 4 out of every 100 people in the United States were 65 or
older. Today, 10 out of every 100 Americans are over 65. The aging of the population will affect
American society in many ways: education, medicine, and business. Quietly, the growing of America has
made it a very different society, in which people have a quite different idea of what kind of behavior is
suitable at various ages.
A person"s age no longer tells you anything about his or her social position, marriage or health. There"s
no longer a particular year in which one goes to school or goes to work or gets married or starts a family. The_social_clock that kept us on time and told us when to go to school, get a job, or stop working isn"t
as strong as it used to be. It doesn"t surprise us to hear of a 29yearold university president or a 35yearold grandmother, or a 70yearold man who has become a father for the first time. Public ideas are changing.
Many people say, "I am much younger than my mother or my father was at my age." No one says, "
Act your age" any more. We"ve stopped looking with surprise at older people who act in youthful ways.
1.What is the main idea of the passage? (no more than 12 words)

3.Fill in the blank with proper words to complete the sentence. (no more than 6 words)

"Two full inches in the first three days!"
These are the kinds of statements used in magazine, newspaper, radio and television ads, promising
new shapes and new looks to those who buy the medicine or the device. The promoters of products
say they can shape the legs, slim the face, smooth wrinkles,or in some other way to add to beauty or
desirability.
Often such products are nothing more than moneymaking things for their promoters. The results
they produce are questionable, and some are dangerous to health.
To understand how these products can be legally promoted to the public,it is necessary to
understand something of the laws covering their regulation. If the product is a drug,FDA(Food and
Drug Administration)can require proof under the Food,Drug, and Cosmetic Act that is safe and
effective before it is put on the market. But if the product is a device,FDA has no authority to require
premarketing proof of safety or effectiveness. If a product already on the market is a danger to health,
FDA can request the producer or distributor to remove it from the market voluntarily,or it can take
legal action,including seizure(查封)of the product.
One notable case a few years ago involved an electrical device called the Relaxacisor, which had
been sold for reducing the waistline. The Relaxacisor produced electrical shocks to the body through
contact pads.FDA took legal action against the distributor to stop the sale of the device on the grounds
that it was dangerous to health and life.
Obviously, most of the devices on the market have never been the subject of court proceedings
(法律诉讼),and new devices appear continually. Before buying,it is up to the consumer to judge the
safety or effectiveness of such items.1.It can be inferred that the ads mentioned in the text are________.A.objective
B.costly
C.unreliable
D.illegal2.Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?A.The court is in charge of removing dangerous products.
B.New products are more likely to be questionable.
C.The production of a device must be approved by FDA.
D.The promoters usually just care about profits.3.FDA can ask for the proof of safety and effectiveness of a product________.A.if it is a drug
B.if it is a device
C.if its consumers make complaints
D.if its distributors challenge FDA"s authority4.The Relaxacisor is mentioned as________.A.a product which was designed to produce electricity
B.a product whose distributor was involved in a legal case
C.a successful advertisement of a beauty product
D.an example of a quality beauty product5.The author intends to________.A.make consumers aware of the promoters" false promises
B.show the weakness of the law on product safety
C.give advice on how to keep young and beautiful
D.introduce the organization of FDA

entertain themselves, after engineers in Japan developed a musical road surface.
A team from the Hokkaido Industrial Research Institute has built a number of "melody roads",
which use cars as tuning forks(音叉)to play music as they travel.
The concept works by using grooves(凹槽).They are cut at very specific intervals in the road
surface. The melody road uses the spaces between to create different notes.
Depending on how far apart the grooves are, a car moving over them will produce a series of
high or low notes, and designers are able to create a distinct tune.
Patent documents for the design describe it as notches(刻痕)"formed in a road surface so as
to play a melody without producing simple sound or rhythm and reproduce melodylike tones".
There are three musical strips in central and northern Japan-one of which plays the tune of a
Japanese pop song. Reports say the system was invented by Shizuo Shinoda. He scraped some
markings into a road with a bulldozer(推土机)before driving over them and found that they helped
to produce all kinds of tones.
The optimal speed for melody road is 44 kph,but people say it is not always easy to get the
intended sound.
"You need to keep the car windows closed to hear well,"wrote one Japanese blogger."Driving
too fast will sound like playing fast forward, while driving around 12 mph[20 km/h]has a slowmotion
effect, making you almost carsick."1.According to the passage, melody roads use________to create different notes.A.cars
B.grooves
C.spaces between intervals
D.bulldozers2.We can learn from the passage that the highness of notes is depended on________.A.how far the grooves are
B.how big the grooves are
C.the number of the grooves
D.the speed of the car3.The underlined word "optimal" in the passage might mean________.A.fastest
B.possible
C.best
D.suitable4.In order to hear the music well, you have to________.A.drive very fast
B.drive slowly
C.open the windows wide
D.keep the windows closed5.What"s the best title of the passage?A.A New Type of Music
B.Melody Roads in Japan
C.A Musical Road Surface
D.A New Invention in Japan

than 7,000 working age Australians. They found that those with jobs had an average score of 75 in a test
of mental well-being. Jobless people averaged 68.5. If you remained unemployed a long term it lowered
your mental health score by 1.1 points. But getting a poor quality job lowered your score ever further-by 5.6 points.
The results suggest that having a bad job may be worse for your mental health than having no job at all.
So what is a bad job? According to the study it’s one where you have little control over decision-making;
the job makes heavy demands on you; there’s no job security; and you feel underpaid.
My advice would be that if a reasonable offer of employment comes along, seize it. If you discover that you don’t like the work, that’s OK. You’ve given it your best shot and discovered that this type of work
isn’t for you.
In my own case my first job was as a trainee social worker. I very quickly learned that I was too
young, too inexperienced and innocent to become a social worker. I cut my losses and tried something
else. I worked as an economic researcher - and was miserable.
These experiences taught me that I was a person. But from my short time as a trainee social worker I
had discovered an ability for interviewing people and writing reports. That led finally to journalism. So take up that first job offer and find out about the world of work. If you realize the job isn’t what you expected,
that’s OK. Look around for something else.
So I disagree that a bad job is worse than no work at all. Remember, it’s always easier to find a job if you are already in work.
1. From the writer’s experience, we could learn that _______.
A. a poor quality job in hand is worse than no jobs at all
B. long-term unemployment got him a mental score of 75
C. you will find another more easily if you stick to a job
D. if a bad job offer comes to you, give it up immediately
2. Which of the following is TRUE when you get a bad job?
A. There is little possibility to decide for your own.
B. You can work securely if you are much devoted.
C. You get paid more than expected but you feel tired.
D. Having a bad job contributes to the mental health.
3. Which of the following best describes the organization of the text?
 A. Cause and effect.
B. Time and space order.
C. Specific and general.
D. Statement and example.
4. What could be the best title of the text?
A. Hang on to that bad job for now
B. A bad job lowers mental score
C. A miserable economic researcher
D. Good jobs make heavy demands

Have you ever been in the situation where you really didn"t believe what someone was saying? Did
you have a sense that something wasn"t true or a feeling that all was not right? Perhaps they were saying
"Yes" yet their heads were shaking "No".
The difference between the words people speak and our understanding of ________ comes from
nonverbal communication, otherwise known as "body language". Body language includes body movements and gestures (legs, arms, hands, head and body), posture, muscle tension, eye contact, skin coloring,
even people"s breathing rate and sweat. Additionally, the tone of voice, the rate of speech and the pitch
of the voice all add to the words that are being used.
By developing your awareness of the signs and signals of body language, you can more easily
understand other people, and more effectively communicate with them. There are sometimes subtle(微妙的)-and sometimes not so subtle-movements, gestures, facial expressions and even shifts in our whole
bodies that indicate something is going on. We have ways of talking, walking, sitting and standing and
they all say something about us, and whatever is happening on the inside can be reflected on the outside.
By becoming more aware of this body language and understanding what it might mean, you can learn
to read people more easily. This puts you in a better position to communicate effectively with them.
What"s more, by increasing your understanding of others, you can also become more aware of the
messages that you convey to them.
There are times when we send mixed messages-we say one thing yet our body language reveals
something different. This nonverbal language will affect how we act and react to others, and how they
react to us. Therefore, in order to communicate more effectively, we should learn the signs and signals
of body language correctly.
