阅读理解     Have you ever been to the beautiful country of Holland and its capital Amsterdam? Anyone who has
traveled to Amsterdam would probably agree on one thing: Amsterdam"s story is a tale of two cities - one during the day and a completely different one at night.
When the sun is up, this largest city in the Netherlands sits quietly on the Amstel River. You can rent a
bicycle, visit the Van Gogh or Anne Frank museum, or take a water taxi. But when the sun goes down,
the partying begins. In the big clubs and in the coffee shops, tourists gather to talk politics and smoke.
Several areas of the city clearly show the two worlds that rule Amsterdam. And they"re all within a
short cab ride of each other. For example, Dam Square attracts daytime sightseers to its festivals, open
markets, concerts and other events. Several beautiful and very popular hotels can be found there. And
there"s the  Royal Palace and the Magna Plaza shopping mall. But at night party-seekers come to the
square. Hip hop or funk music (疯狂音乐) is heard there. So if you come, be ready to dance. The clubs
don"t shut down until 4 am.
And while you"re there, check out the various inexpensive ways to tour the city. Don"t worry about
getting lost. Although Dutch is the official language, most people in Amsterdam speak English and are
happy to help you with directions. And you"ll notice that half the people walking around in the streets are
on bicycles they rent. Amsterdam also has a well-planned canal system. For about 10 dollars, you can
use the canal bus or a water taxi to cruise (巡游) the "Venice of the North".
The city has a historic past. One impressive (印象深刻的) place to visit is the Anne Frank House
on Nine Street. It was there that the young Jewish girl wrote her famous diary during World War II.
Visitors can view Anne"s original diary and climb behind the bookcase to the room where she and her
family hid from the Nazis for two years.

阅读理解     A serious problem for today"s society is who should be responsible for our elderly and how to
improve their lives. It is not only a financial problem but also a question of the system we want for
our society. I would like to suggest several possible solutions to this problem.
First, employers should take the responsibility for their retired employees. To make this possible,
a percentage of profits should be set aside for this purpose. But when a company must take life-long
responsibility for its employees, it may suffer from a commercial disadvantage due to higher employee
costs.
Another way of solving the problem is to return the responsibility to the individual. This means each
person must save during his working years to pay for his years of retirement. This does not seem a very
fair model since some people have enough trouble paying for their daily life without trying to earn extra
to cover their retirement years. This means the government might have to step in to care for the poor.
In addition, the government could take responsibility for the care of the elderly. This could be
financed through government taxes to increase the level of pensions(养老金). Furthermore, some
in-situations should be created for senior citizens, which can help provide a comfortable life for them.
Unfortunately, as the present situation in our country shows, this is not a truly viable answer. The
government can seldom afford to care for the elderly, particularly when it is busy trying to care for the
young.
One further solution is that the government or social organizations establish some working places
especially for the elderly where they are independent.
To sum up, all these options(选择) have advantages and disadvantages. Therefore, it is reasonable
to expect that some combination of these options may be needed to provide the care we hope to give
to our elderly generations.

1. According to the passage, how can the government help to improve the lives of retired people?

A. Set aside some profits to help people with problems after they retire.
B. Increase savings levels of people during their working years.
C. Increase the discounts for food and transport for the old.
D. Increase the level of pensions.

2. The underlined word "viable" in the fourth paragraph most probably means "______".

A. impossible
B. practical
C. perfect
D. obvious

3. What is the writer"s main purpose in writing this article?

A. To point out the need for government support for old people.
B. To make general readers aware of the problems of retired people.
C. To discuss some possible solutions to an important social problem.
D. To instruct retired people on how they can have a happier life.

Do you know how to be a street smart? Being street smart means knowing how to keep yourself
safe from strangers when you"re alone or with other kids.     1
Most strangers aren"t dangerous and wouldn"t do anything to hurt kids. Unfortunately, though. some
strangers can be dangerous, and it"s impossible to tell who"ok and who"s not.     2    That"s why it"s
important to follow these safety rules all the time:
    Make your whereabouts known.
The adults who are taking care of you need to know where you are and when you"ll be coming home.
        3
It"s more fun and safer to do things with friends. Traveling with afriend whenever you can is a good
idea, and traveling with a group of kids is even better.
       4
Safe spots are places where you can stop if you need help. Like the houses of kids you know, the
houses of your parents"friends, police stations, libraries, and fire departments. When you"re walking or
riding your bike, make a mental note of the safe spots along your route. That way, you"ll know where
they are in case you ever need one.
        5
You"re probably been told lots of times that you should not shout and keep quiet. But when you think
you might be in danger, it"a the perfect time to be noisy! If a stranger gets close to you, follows you or
tries to grab you, shout as loudly as you can and try to get away. People in the area will hear what"s

阅读理解     No one has enough, but everyone has all there is. We each have just twenty-four hours in a day. Time
is not our problems , but what we do with the limited time we have is the issue. Many people spend their
days on dozens of activities , but achieve very little because they aren"t concentrating on right things. The
Pareto Principle, also known as the 80:20 Rule shows us that typically eighty per cent of unfocused effort
generates only twenty percent of the results. The remaining eighty per cent of the results are achieved
with only twenty percent of the effort . To effectively manage your time, you need to change where you
are spending your time. We all have the same amount of time every day. How you spend your time is
how you spend your life. Here are time management strategies, which may be helpful.
     Learn to say no
Politely say no should become a habit. Saying no frees up time for the things that are most important.
     Make a "to-do" list
List the tasks that need to be done in order of their importance. Save other less important things for
when you have time.
Minimize interruption
Plan ahead. Think through projects. Look for ways to "block" interruptions. For example, close your
door, don"t answer the phone or work in a different space.
Combine several activities
Try to do several activities at one time. While going to school, listen to taped notes. This allows up to an
hour or two a day of good study review. While showering, make a mental list of the things. Above all,be
creative, and let it work for you.

阅读理解     Paul, the oracle octopus (神算章鱼), was given a replica (复制品) of the World Cup as a reward
for his perfect eight-for-eight record in predicting the results of matches.
The two-year-old octopus with possible supernatural powers turned into a worldwide celebrity for
accurately predicting the German team"s five World Cup wins as well as their two defeats. Paul also
tipped Spain to beat Netherlands in the final.
"We have had a lot of offers for Paul but he will definitely be staying with us and returning to his usual
job-making children smile," Sea Life spokeswoman Tanja Munzig in Oberhausen said after presenting
Pual with the World Cup replica.
There"s no rational(合理的)reasons why Paul always got it right. Bettors around the world made
small fortunes based on Paul"s guess, said Graham Sharpe, media relations director at William Hill in
London. "I"ve seen a lot of things in my lifetime but this is the first time I"ve ever seen people making their
picks based on what an octopus tells them. We had people coming in saying they didn"t know how to
place a bet but heard about this German octopus and wanted to bet with him. It"s funny. But he kept
getting it right." said Sharpe.
Sharpe said that anyone who had placed a 10-pound accumulator bet(累计下注)on Paul"s prediction
from the start of the World Cup would have won 3,000 pounds($4,500)by the end of the tournament.
Paul"s home at Sea Life aquarium(水族馆)in Oberhausen has been crowded with visitors and media
